Service Programming System (SPS)

Review the information below to ensure proper programming protocol.
| IMPORTANT | DO NOT program a control module unless you are directed by a service procedure or you are directed by a General Motors Corporation service bulletin. Programming a control module at any other time will not permanently correct a customer's concern. It is essential that the Tech 2 and the TIS terminal are both equipped with the latest software before performing service programming system (SPS). Some modules will require additional programming/setup events performed before or after programming. Due to the time requirements of programming a controller, it is recommended that an external power source be used to maintain system voltage. Stable battery voltage is critical during programming. Any fluctuation, spiking, over voltage or loss of voltage will interrupt programming. To ensure trouble-free programming, GM recommends using one of the following external power sources: Midtronic PCS charger fully charged 12V jumper or booster pack disconnected from the AC voltage supply Some modules will require additional programming/setup events performed before or after programming. Some vehicles may require the use of a CANDi module for programming. Review the appropriate service information for these procedures. DTCs may set during programming. Clear DTCs after programming is complete. Clearing powertrain DTCs will set the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) system status indicators to NO. |
Ensure the following conditions are met before programming a control module
- Vehicle system voltage There is not a charging system concern. All charging system concerns must be repaired before programming a control module. Battery voltage is greater than 12 volts but less than 16 volts. The battery must be charged before programming the control module if the battery voltage is low. Turn OFF or disable any system that may put a load on the vehicle's battery, such as the following components: Twilight sentinel Interior lights Daytime running lights (DRL)-Applying the parking brake, on most vehicles, disables the DRL system. Refer to the Owner's manual. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems Engine cooling fans, radio, etc.
- The ignition switch must be in the proper position. The Tech 2 prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during the programming procedure, unless instructed to do so.
- Make certain all tool connections are secure, including the following components and circuits: The RS-232 communication cable port The connection at the data link connector (DLC) The voltage supply circuits
- DO NOT disturb the tool harnesses while programming. If an interruption occurs during the programming procedure, programming failure or control module damage may occur.
- DO NOT turn OFF the ignition if the programming procedure is interrupted or unsuccessful. Ensure that all control module and DLC connections are secure and the TIS terminal operating software is up to date. Attempt to reprogram the control module. If the control module cannot be programmed, replace the control module.
Audio Amplifier Programming and Setup
There is no setup procedure that needs to be performed for the amplifier on this vehicle.
Body Control Module Programming and Setup
Each of the following courses of action requires a setup or programming procedure before the body control module (BCM) can be put into normal service.
Body Control Module (BCM) Reprogramming
If the BCM is reprogrammed, the following procedures must be performed
- BCM Reprogramming-Refer to «Body Control Module (BCM) Programming/RPO Configuration»(ref-242975-S27591399792006082100000) in Computer/Integrating Systems for replacement, setup, and programming.
- Brake Pedal Position Sensor Calibration-Refer to «Brake Pedal Position Sensor Calibration»(ref-242978-S03290695782006082100000) in Lighting Systems.
Communication Interface Module (OnStar) Programming and Setup
Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the communication interface module.
Digital Radio Receiver Programming and Setup
Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the digital radio receiver (DRR).
EBCM Reprogramming
If the EBCM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .
Engine Control Module Programming and Setup (2.4 LE5)
The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.
ECM Reprogramming
- If the engine control module (ECM) needs to be reprogrammed, refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(ref-243033-S39171416042006082100000) .
Engine Control Module Programming and Setup (3.5 or 3.9)
The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.
- If the engine control module (ECM) needs to be reprogrammed, refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(ref-243033-S39171416042006082100000) .
- Engine Oil Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
- Turn the ignition OFF for 30 seconds.
- Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.
- Use the scan tool in order to retrieve history DTCs from all modules.
- Clear all history DTCs.
Folding Top Control Module Programming and Setup
This device requires no programming or setup.
Heated Seat Control Module Programming and Setup
This device requires no programming or setup.
HVAC Control Module Programming and Setup
Each of the following service procedures requires programming or setup procedures to be performed on the HVAC control module.
Instrument Panel Cluster Programming and Setup
This device requires no programming or setup.
Passenger Presence System Programming and Setup
| IMPORTANT | Before rezeroing the passenger presence system (PPS), the front passenger seat must be completely empty of all items. The presence of any items on the front passenger seat will affect the calibration and operation of the PPS. When rezeroing the PPS, the instrument panel cluster (IPC) and dash lights will begin dimming on and off. This is normal operation during the rezeroing procedure and does not indicate additional system faults. |
If the PPS is replaced or serviced, perform the rezeroing procedure for the PPS. Refer to Passenger Presence System Rezeroing Procedure for the rezeroing procedure.
Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) Setup
After replacing the power steering motor and module assembly the following 3 procedures must be performed. After replacing the steering column assembly only the steering position sensor and the torque sensor calibration procedures must be performed. The steering position sensor and torque sensor calibration procedures should also be performed after a suspension alignment. Certain steering symptoms can be corrected by performing the steering position sensor and torque sensor calibration procedures such as
- Poor or uneven return to center
- Poor or uneven on center feel
| IMPORTANT | The power steering control module (PSCM) must be setup using the service programming system (SPS). There are 8 different tuning profile calibrations stored in the PSCM. The SPS will select the correct tuning profile calibration for this vehicle. Setup the PSCM to use that profile. If the PSCM has not been setup, the scan tool will display the Tuning Profile is 0 in the EPS data list, and DTC C0551 will set. |
Steering Tuning Selection
- Install the scan tool.
- Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
- With the scan tool select Special Functions
- Select Steering Tuning Selection and press the enter key. The scan tool screen will flash Selection in Progress then display Calibration Complete.
- Press the exit key.
- Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs.
- Turn OFF the ignition.
Powertrain Control Module Programming and Setup
The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.
PCM Reprogramming
If the PCM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .
- If the PCM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(ref-243033-S39171416042006082100000) .
- Engine Oil Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
- Turn the ignition OFF for 30 seconds.
- Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.
- Use the scan tool in order to retrieve history DTCs from all modules.
- Clear all history DTCs.
Radio Programming and Setup
Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the radio.
Sunroof Motor/Actuator
The sunroof motor/actuator uses sensor inputs to continuously monitor the location of the glass panel and to establish soft stop locations several millimeters ahead of the hard stops (physical limits) of the glass panel. The sunroof motor/actuator includes the sunroof motor, actuator, sensors and the control module. These components are not serviced individually.
Sunroof Motor/Actuator Reprogramming
This component is not re-programmable.
If battery positive voltage or ground is removed and re-installed from the sunroof motor/actuator, the following procedure must be performed in the following order
- Place the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Press and hold the sunroof switch to the OPEN position until the glass panel stops at the rear soft stop position.
- Release the sunroof switch.
- Press and hold the sunroof switch again to the OPEN position for 10 seconds or more. The sunroof will stall at the hard stop position, then move back to the soft stop position.
- Release the sunroof switch.
- Within 6 seconds, press and hold the sunroof switch again to the OPEN position. After 3 more seconds, the glass panel will move toward the close position. Continue pressing the switch until the glass stops at the closed position.
- Release the sunroof switch.
- Verify sunroof operation. Refer to «Sunroof Description and Operation (W/RPO CF5)»(ref-243032-S25926619202006082100000) or «Sunroof Description and Operation (W/RPO C3Y)»(ref-243032-S14494079942006082100000) in Roof.
The re-initialization procedure is not complete if one of the following actions occur before the procedure is complete
- The sunroof switch is not held in the OPEN position.
- The ignition switch is turned to the OFF position.
- Battery positive voltage is removed.
- The glass panel did not reach the fully closed position.

The sunroof motor/actuator includes the sunroof motor, actuator, sensors and the control module. These components are not serviced individually.
This component is not re-programmable.
If the sunroof motor/actuator has been removed and re-installed, or if battery positive voltage or ground has been removed from the motor/actuator for any reason, follow the sunroof motor/actuator replacement initialization procedure.
Theft Deterrent Control Module Programming and Setup
Each of the following service procedures requires programming or setup procedures to be performed on the theft deterrent control module.
Replacing Keys
If a key is replaced, the following procedure must be performed

Transmission Control Module Programming and Setup
- The transmission control module (TCM) must be programmed with the proper software/calibrations. Ensure that the following conditions exist in order to prepare for TCM programming: The battery is fully charged. The ignition switch is in the RUN position. The Techline equipment cable connection at the data link connector (DLC) is secure.
- Program the TCM using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment user instructions.
- If the TCM fails to program, proceed as follows: Ensure that the TCM connection is OK. Inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version. Attempt to program the TCM. If the TCM still cannot be programmed properly, replace the TCM.
Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Programming and Setup
The following procedure must be performed when replacing the remote control door lock receiver module.
