Functional Description

The REC is a control unit for electronic actuation of the rear lighting. It is responsible for fault detection of the lamps installed in the rear of the vehicle. An additional function is the actuation of the relays installed in the REC. In addition, the REC contains fuses for the protection of the voltage supply (terminals 15 and 30) of all control units and components installed in the rear of the vehicle. The REC receives most control data, which influences the illumination condition and actuation of the various relays (terminal 15 and rear screen wiper), by means of messages via the low-speed CAN bus (LSCAN).

The REC comprises the following functions:

  • Rear exterior lighting
  • Rear screen wiper
  • Rain sensor evaluation
  • Trailer recognition
  • Rear seat heating
  • Luggage compartment unlocking
  • Automatic closing function for rear window winders
  • Rear screen heating function
  • Interruption of dimming of electrochromatic interior mirror

Voltage Management Function

The voltage supply terminal 15 is directly wired to the REC, which is additionally provided with CAN messages from the CIM. The REC also actuates the voltage supply relays of the various control units and components via terminal 15.

Screen Wiper Function

The REC is responsible for the following wiper functions:

  • Rear screen wiper
  • Rain sensor evaluation

Rear Exterior Lamp Function

The REC is responsible for the actuation and monitoring of the following illumination functions

  • Rear lamps
  • Brake lights
  • Reversing lamps
  • Rear turn signal lamps
  • Licence plate lamps
  • Rear fog lamp

Trailer Module Function

In order that the vehicle can be operated with a trailer, a trailer module must be connected to the REC. If the trailer module is connected, the REC transmits a confirmation on the CAN bus.

Trailer Recognition Function

The REC recognises that a trailer is connected to the vehicle, if more than one correctly functioning trailer bulb is detected. This information is transmitted by the REC on the CAN bus.

Rear Seat Heating Function

The REC detects the operation of the rear right and left seat heating switches and actuates the relay as well as the LED for the rear right and left seat heating, on the basis of this information.

Luggage Compartment Unlocking Function

If the REC receives the request "unlock" from the body control module (BCM), it enables the output for luggage compartment unlocking. The licence plate lamps are actuated for illumination of the rear of the vehicle.

Rear Screen Heating Function

If the REC receives the message "switch on rear screen heating" from the body control module (BCM), it actuates the relay for the rear screen heating. As confirmation, it transmits the message "rear screen heating activated" on the CAN bus.

Automatic Closing Function

The REC activates the automatic closing function for the rear doors, if it receives the CAN message "activate automatic closing" from the driver's door electronics module (DDM).

Electrochromatic Interior Mirror Dimming Function

If the REC receives the information that reverse gear is engaged or that one of the 4 doors is open, dimming of the electrochromatic interior mirror is prevented.

Follow Me Home Function

If the REC receives the appropriate CAN message, it actuates the reversing lamps in order to illuminate the rear of the vehicle.
