Functional Description

The BCM is responsible for:

  • all interior illumination functions
  • all functions of central door locking system Direct actuation of the rear central door locking motors and the tank flap
  • the anti-theft warning system
  • turn signal functions, turn signal synchronisation
  • rear screen and outside mirror heating
  • direct actuation of the rear window winders

Exterior Lighting

The BCM reads in the switch positions from the light switches directly via conventional wiring.

This information is transmitted to the relevant control units via CAN messages.

The following information is read in:

  • Parking light
  • Low beam
  • Front fog lamps
  • Rear fog lamp

The hazard warning light switch is also read in via conventional wiring.

See also Chapter: Exterior lighting – function

Flash Functions

The BCM controls the following flash functions:

  • Turn signal lamps
  • Side turn signals
  • Hazard warning lights
  • Central door locking system flashing
  • Anti-theft warning system flashing

The various flashing frequencies are determined by the BCM, for instance when a turn signal lamp is defective, the flashing frequency is increased on the relevant side.

See also Chapter: Turn signal lamp system – function

Interior Illumination

The interior illumination includes the following functions:

  • Instruments and switch dimming
  • Sill illumination
  • Interior lamp with reading lamps
  • Glove compartment, luggage compartment, vanity mirror illumination
  • Backlighting for various switches
  • Automatic load disconnection of the interior lamps if consumers are still switched on 15 minutes after the vehicle is parked

See also Chapter: Interior illumination – function

Park Pilot PAS

The status of the park pilot switch is read in by the BCM and transmitted to the park pilot control unit as a corresponding CAN message.

As a reply, the PAS transmits a CAN message with its condition, whereupon the BCM switches on the telltale.

Central Door Locking System

The BCM is responsible for all the memory functions.

See also Chapter: Central door locking system – function

Heater Fan Run-On

The BCM can allow the fan to run on at the maximum fan speed after the AC / ignition has been switched off. For this purpose, the ultrasonic sensors of the ATWS are deactivated to prevent a false alarm during the run-on period.

Add-On Heater Control Unit Ahs

The BCM reads in the ambient temperature value and switches on the add-on heater via a CAN message when the temperature falls below approx. 8 °C.

Heated Rear Screen and Electric Outside Mirrors

The switch for the heated rear screen / mirror heating is read in by the BCM.

In vehicles without ECC, the switch is connected directly to the BCM. In vehicles with ECC, the BCM receives the switch actuation information in a CAN message from the ECC. This is transmitted from the mid-speed CAN bus to the low-speed CAN bus via the DIS interface.

After a period of approx. 15 min, the screen heater is automatically switched off again by the BCM.

Additional Functions for Anti-Theft Warning System

  • Monitoring of doors, tailgate, bonnet contacts
  • Serial interface for alarm siren (Vauxhall)
  • Serial interface for ultrasonic sensors
  • Integrated inclination sensor
  • Rear screen monitoring
  • Control of anti-theft warning system horn
  • Ultrasound – OFF switch in dashboard for next activation period
  • Auxiliary heating (as of Model Year 2003) disables the ultrasonic function
