Starter, Disassemble and Assemble

Field winding connection.

Bolts, solenoid switch

Torsion spring, piston, spacer washer

Through bolts, stator cover from stator

Stator, rotor, carbon brush holder and seal ring assembly - from stator.

Remove carbon brushes and collector carefully.

Release brush spring, carbon brushes from mount

Note brush spring.

Carbon brush holder from stator, rotor from stator

Bearing retaining ring, overrunning clutch with starter pinion and ball bearings from stator

Rubber support carefully from stator, engaging lever

Drive back retaining ring (1) on armature shaft

Press down return spring over retaining ring with open-ended wrench, snap ring with suitable tool.

Retaining ring and return spring, turn starter pinion with shaft from overrunning clutch.

Starter pinion for signs of wear and damage.

Lubricate sliding parts - Grease 19 41 574 (90 001 812)

Spiral spline and ball bearing on armature shaft, reduction gear with hollow shaft of overrunning clutch and starter pinion with shaft.

Remove any sealing compound from edges of housing and bolt contact surfaces of solenoid switch housing.

Spacer washer to solenoid switch, piston, torsion spring in bore holes

Engaging lever - groove upwards, rubber support up to stop

Sealing Compound 15 03 166 (90 094 714) to edge of housing and rear bolt contact surfaces (arrows)

Attach solenoid switch over torsion spring and piston lug in engaging lever.

Bolts, solenoid switch - 7.5 Nm/5.5 lbf. ft.

Pinion shaft in overrunning clutch, return spring and retaining ring, press down return spring over retaining ring with open-ended wrench

Secure new snap ring on shaft.

Overrunning clutch

Overrunning clutch locks when pinion is turned in drive direction.

Pinion for freedom of movement - turn pinion in opposite direction.

Lubricate - Grease 19 41 574 (90 001 812) - reduction gear of overrunning clutch

Reduction gear in housing, press bearing retaining ring onto bearing, fastening bolts.

New seal ring in stator.

Sealing Compound 15 03 166 (90 094 714) to edge of stator (arrow).

Rotor in stator, carbon brush holder to stator.

Locking lug (arrow) must engage in groove of stator.

Carbon brushes

Insert springs into guide (arrow).

Stator, rotor, carbon brush holder and seal ring assembled into housing.

Housing cover with through bolts.

Torque - 6.5 Nm/5 lbf. ft.

Field winding connection - 9.0 Nm/7.5 lbf. ft.
