Starter, Check (Starter Disassembled)

Rotor winding

Cleaning benzine (commercially available) - only brief contact permissible.

Rotor winding - for short-circuited turn with suitable tester.

Short-circuited turn - replace rotor.

Check all individual parts for wear - repair or replace if necessary.

Rotor winding - for short-circuit to ground.

Hold probes to armature core and corresponding collector lamination.

Test lamp must not illuminate.

Short circuit to ground - replace rotor.

Rotor winding - for interruption.

Set windings in circuit with ammeter, touch collector briefly from lamination to lamination.

Test voltage: 2 volts

Voltage variations indicate interruption.

Interruption - replace rotor.

Field winding

Replace burned or charred windings.

Field winding - for short-circuit to ground

Hold test probes to winding ends and stator housing.

Test lamp must not illuminate.

Short circuit to ground - replace field winding.

Positive brush holder - for short circuit to ground.

Hold test probes to negative brush holder and positive brush holder.

Test lamp must not illuminate.

Short circuit to ground of brush holder - replace brush holder plate.

Rotor for wear - gauge.

New rotor: 0.03 mm or less

Run-in rotor max.: 0.04 mm

Collector surface - if necessary with sand paper

(grain 500 - 600)

Outer diameter

New rotor: 30 mm

Run-in rotor min.: 29 mm

Depth of groove on collector

New rotor: 0.5 - 0.8 mm

Run-in rotor min.: 0.2 mm

1 = Insulation

2 = Collector segments

3 = correct

4 = incorrect
