Subject: Alternators

Condition: Examinations of alternators which have been returned under guarantee indicate that a very large percentage of these alternators are not faulty.
Cause: It must be supposed that in response to complaints such as "discharged battery" or "flickering charge telltale", alternators are replaced without undergoing further tests.
Remedy: If no definite faults are diagnosed as regards voltage supply, the alternator's performance andregulated voltage must be checked.
The corresponding Checking Instructions and Technical Data can be found in group J of the Service Instructions. The Diagnostic Program of the Opel Tester also contains nominal values and the corresponding Operation Instructions.
In order to avoid customer dissatisfaction and the return of rejects under the guarantee system, only alternators or regulators which have been definately diagnosed as faulty should be returned.
