Note. Check straight-ahead position in all cases following service work on steering gear. The straight-ahead position is attained when boots sit tension-free over the length (I) between tie rod grooves and steering housing and the wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
Steering gear shaft can be inserted in the intermediate shaft with a 360° offset. This is indicated by the boot being extended or compressed with the steering wheel in straight-ahead position and the wheels not being in the straight-ahead position.
Remove
- 1. Lock steering • Turn steering into straight-ahead position • Pull out ignition key. • Allow steering lock to engage
Note. Disregard for vehicles with Open and Start.
Note. Vehicles with Open and Start: Disconnect the battery. Switch the ignition on and off. Open and close the driver's door. The steering lock and ignition lock engage automatically.
- 2. Remove intermediate shaft from steering gear shaft
- 3. Turn steering gear shaft until the boots are the same length on both sides and the wheels are in the straight-ahead position
Install
- 4. Attach intermediate shaft to steering gear
- 5. Slight deviations from the straight-ahead position for steering and straight-ahead position for wheels can be corrected by adjusting the toe-in (change length of tie rods).
