Steering Column Replacement Opel Agila B

Remove

  1. 1. Disconnect battery negative lead • Release nut
  2. 2. Release airbag from steering wheel • Release 2x bolt (1)
  1. 3. Remove airbag from steering wheel • Disconnect harness connector (1) from airbag – Release clip (3) • Disconnect earth lead (2) for horn from airbag
  2. 4. Disconnect harness connector from airbag contact unit
  3. 5. Release steering wheel from steering column • Remove nut
  4. 6. Remove steering wheel from steering column • Use Puller KM-210-3 • Withdraw airbag harness through aperture in steering wheel

Note. Steering wheel should be in the straight ahead position before removing.

  1. 7. Remove lower trim panel (1) from instrument panel • Release 10x clip
  2. 8. Remove 2x canopy (2) from steering column • Remove 3x screw (3) • Remove ignition key • Release lower canopy from upper canopy – Release 7x clip
  1. 9. Disconnect airbag harness connector (yellow) from airbag contact unit • Slide lock rearward
  2. 10. Disconnect radio switch harness (2) connector from airbag contact unit
  3. 11. For ESP model only, disconnect harness connector (1) from steering angle sensor
  4. 12. Remove airbag contact unit with steering angle sensor (ESP model only) from steering column • Release 3x clip
  5. 13. For ESP model only, remove steering angle sensor from airbag contact unit • Release 6x clip, then withdraw steering angle sensor from 4x locator on airbag contact unit
  1. 14. Remove multifunction switch (1) from steering column (2) • Disconnect harness connector (3) • Release clip
  1. 15. Remove immobilizer control module (2) from steering and ignition lock assembly • Disconnect harness connector (1) • Remove screw (3)
  1. 16. Remove windshield wiper switch (1) from steering column (3) • Disconnect harness connector (2) • Release clip
  1. 17. Remove ignition lock cylinder (3) from steering and ignition lock assembly (4) • Install ignition key to ignition lock cylinder and turn to "ACC" position • Insert suitable tool (1) through hole (2) in steering and ignition lock assembly, then pull out ignition lock cylinder • Remove ignition key
  1. 18. Remove ignition switch (1) from steering and ignition lock • Disconnect 2x harness connector (2) • Remove 2x screw (3)
  1. 19. Release instrument harness from steering column assembly • Release 3x clip
  2. 20. For vehicles with 80-40LS transmission, release key interlock cable from steering and ignition lock assembly • Turn ignition lock cylinder to "ACC" position • Release clip and slide out, using suitable tool • Turn ignition lock cylinder to "LOCK" position
  3. 21. Remove intermediate shaft from steering gear • Turn steering gear for access to coupling bolt, then apply match marks • Remove bolt (1, 2)
  1. 22. Remove steering column assembly from vehicle • Remove 4x nut (1)
  1. 23. Transfer steering column assembly (1) to work bench
  2. 24. Install steering column assembly to soft jawed vice
  3. 25. Remove steering and ignition lock from steering column assembly • Remove 2x shear bolt (2) and mounting bracket

Install

  1. 26. Install steering and ignition lock to new steering column assembly (1) • Install new mounting bracket and 2x new shear bolt (2)
  2. 27. Remove steering column assembly from soft jawed vice
  3. 28. Transfer steering column assembly to vehicle
  1. 29. Install steering column assembly to vehicle • Install 4x nut (1) 14 Nm
  1. 30. Install intermediate shaft to steering gear • Locate shaft to upper spline and lower coupling • Install bolt (2) 25 Nm • Secure bolt (1) 25 Nm

Note. Align match marks and turn steering gear as required for bolt access.

  1. 31. For vehicles with 80-40LS transmission, secure key interlock cable to steering and ignition lock assembly • Turn ignition lock cylinder to "ACC" position • Slide in to secure clip • Turn ignition lock cylinder to "LOCK" position
  2. 32. Secure instrument harness to steering column assembly • Release 3x clip
  3. 33. Install ignition switch (1) to steering and ignition lock • Install 2x screw (3) • Connect 2x harness connector (2)
  1. 34. Install ignition lock cylinder (1) to steering and ignition lock assembly (2) • Install ignition key to ignition lock cylinder and turn to "ACC" position • Push ignition lock cylinder into steering and ignition lock assembly until it clicks • Remove ignition key
  1. 35. Install windshield wiper switch (1) to steering column (3) • Secure clip • Connect harness connector (2)
  1. 36. Install immobilizer control module (2) to steering and ignition lock assembly • Install screw (3) • Connect harness connector (1)
  1. 37. Install multifunction switch (1) to steering column (2) • Connect harness connector (3) • Secure clip
  1. 38. For ESP model only, install steering angle sensor to airbag contact unit • Position steering angle sensor to 4x locator on airbag contact unit, then secure 6x clip

Important. The airbag contact unit will be centred. Improper alignment of the airbag contact unit may damage the unit, causing an inflatable restraint malfunction.

  1. 39. Install airbag contact unit with steering angle sensor (ESP model only) to steering column • Secure 3x clip
  2. 40. Centre contact unit • Remove yellow retaining tab • Turn airbag contact coil anti clockwise slowly with a light force until airbag contact coil will not turn any further • From the position where airbag contact coil has become unable to turn any further, turn back clockwise about two and a half rotations and align centre mark with alignment mark
  3. 41. For ESP model only, connect harness connector (1) to steering angle sensor
  4. 42. Connect radio switch harness connector (2) to airbag contact unit
  5. 43. Connect airbag harness connector (yellow) to airbag contact unit
  1. 44. Install 2x canopy (2) to steering column • Secure lower canopy to upper canopy – Secure 7x clip • Install ignition key • Install 3x screw (3)
  2. 45. Install lower trim panel (1) to instrument panel • Secure 10x clip
  1. 46. Install steering wheel to steering column • Feed airbag harness through aperture in steering wheel • Install nut 33 Nm
  2. 47. Connect harness connector to airbag contact unit
  1. 48. Install airbag to steering wheel • Connect earth lead (2) for horn to airbag • Connect harness connector (1) to airbag – Secure clip (3)
  2. 49. Secure airbag to steering wheel • Secure 2x bolt (1) 9 Nm
  1. 50. Connect battery negative lead • Secure nut 11 Nm
  2. 51. Program all volatile memories – see operation “Program Volatile Memories”
