REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| WARNING | Vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. |
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. Before disconnecting battery, see COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. |
Removal
- Place protective tape between the instrument panel vinyl trim and the instrument panel center trim panel. Place protective tape between the instrument panel center trim panel bottom edge and the top edge of the console trim plate.
- Insert a plastic trim tool between the instrument panel and the upper right corner of the center trim panel. Ensure the trim tool is far enough in to engage the plastic substrate of the trim panel. (Scheme 314) Working in a clockwise rotation, pry the trim panel outward in order to disengage the retainers. Remove the trim panel.

Remove the console trim plate screws (1). (Scheme 315) Between the rear edge of the console trim plate (2) and the closed cup holder door, carefully insert a plastic trim tool. Insert the plastic trim tool far enough to ensure it is behind the plastic substrate of the trim plate.
- Pry upward in order to disengage the 2 rear retainer clips. Disengage the remaining retainer clips as follows: Use one hand to carefully push the left hand side of the console away from the trim plate. Use the other hand to grasp the left hand side of the trim plate through the chrome ring. Gently pull up the left side of the trim plate just far enough to disengage the retainer clips. Repeat steps A-C for the right hand side of the trim.
- Place the gearshift lever in the 3rd gear position. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the console trim plate as follows: Grasp the top and bottom of the chrome ring on the console trim plate with both hands and gently pull the trim plate assembly rearward until the 2 upper attaching brackets are clear of the radio. (Scheme 315) Tip the trim plate up and pull the trim rearward until it is clear of the instrument panel. Remove the trim plate from the vehicle.
Scheme 315
- Ensure the protective tape is still in place. Position the trim plate to the console. Connect the electrical connectors.
- Engage the retainer clips as follows: Use one hand to carefully push the left hand side of the console away from the trim plate. Use the other hand to grasp the left hand side of the trim plate through the chrome ring. Align the retainer clips on the left side of the trim plate to the openings in the console. Repeat steps A-C for the right side.
- Apply even downward pressure on the trim plate (2) to engage the retaining clips. DO NOT use force.
- Install the screws (1). Tighten the screws to 18 INCH lbs. (2 N.m). Install the center instrument panel trim plate. See «CENTER INSTRUMENT PANEL TRIM»(ref-133004-S41368136452002021100000) .
- Remove the protective tape. Install the gearshift lever knob. Shift the vehicle into Park. Remove the blocks from the wheels. Disengage the parking brake.
- Remove the console trim plate. See «CONSOLE TRIM PLATE»(ref-133004-S03751168422002021100000). Unsnap the shift cable terminal from the shifter pin. Remove the shift cable bolt and cable from the shifter. (Scheme 316)
- Disconnect the automatic transmission shift lock control wire harness connector from the shift lock solenoid. Disengage the locking tab on the park lock cable and lift the cable out of the slot in the shifter.
- Unhook the park lock cable from the park lock cam on the shifter. Disconnect the shifter backlight wire harness connector. Remove the shifter fasteners. Spread the console side panels apart and remove the shifter assembly. (Scheme 317)
- Spread the console side panels apart and install the shifter assembly. (Scheme 317) Install the shifter fasteners. Tighten the shifter fasteners to 79 INCH lbs. (9 N.m). Connect the shifter backlight wire harness connector. Insert the park lock cable into the park lock cam on the shifter.
- Slide the park lock cable into the shifter and ensure the cable locking tab is fully engaged. Connect the shift lock solenoid wire harness connector. Snap the shift cable terminal onto the shifter pin. Fasten the shift cable to the shifter. (Scheme 316) Tighten the shift cable fastener to 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m).
- Adjust the shift cable as follows: place the shifter in the Neutral position. Loosen the shifter adjuster nut. Tighten the adjuster nut. Tighten the adjuster nut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m). Install the console trim plate.

Remove the fasteners securing the closeout insulator panel to the instrument panel retainer. (Scheme 318) Remove the heater temperature sensor from the closeout insulator panel by turning 1/4 turn counter clockwise. Disconnect electrical connector from the lower instrument panel courtesy light. Slide the closeout insulator panel rearward in order to remove from the vehicle.
Set the forward edge of the closeout insulator panel onto the shelf of carpeting at the front of the vehicle. Connect the electrical connector to the lower instrument panel courtesy light. Install the heater temperature sensor to the closeout insulator panel by turning 1/4 turn clockwise. Install fasteners into lower instrument panel. Position the closeout insulator panel to the instrument panel retainer. Install the fasteners in order to secure the close out insulator panel to the instrument panel retainer. (Scheme 318) Tighten the fasteners to 18 INCH lbs. (2 N.m).

- Place the gearshift lever in Park position. Remove the left closeout insulator panel. See «LEFT SIDE INSULATOR PANEL»(ref-133004-S02039893002002021100000) . Loosen the left front carpet to allow access to the park lock cable routing.
- Remove the 4 steering column bolts and lower the steering column. See appropriate STEERING COLUMNS article in STEERING.
- Turn the ignition key to RUN position. Slip a flat blade screwdriver into the slot provided in the ignition switch inhibitor. Depress the cable latch and pull the park lock cable from the inhibitor.
- Remove the radio and console trim plates. See «CENTER INSTRUMENT PANEL TRIM»(ref-133004-S41368136452002021100000) and «CONSOLE TRIM PLATE»(ref-133004-S03751168422002021100000) . Remove the park lock cable at the shift control assembly. Remove the park lock cable from the vehicle.
- Using a flat head screwdriver, pry the lock button of the park lock cable into the UNLOCKED position (1). Install the park lock cable at the shift control assembly.
- With the shift control assembly in Park position and the ignition key in RUN position, snap the park lock cable into the inhibitor housing. Turn the ignition key to the LOCK position.
- Snap the cable end onto the pin of the transmission gearshift lever (4). Push the park lock cable toward the gearshift lever assembly in order to remove the slack. Push the lock button on the park lock cable down into the LOCKED position.
- Inspect the park lock cable as follows: With the gearshift lever in Park position and the ignition key in the LOCK position, ensure the gearshift lever cannot move to another position. The ignition key should be removable from the lock cylinder. Turn the ignition key to RUN position and move the gearshift lever to Neutral position. Ensure the ignition key cannot be turned to the LOCK position. If the above checks are okay, proceed to next step. If the above checks are not okay, readjust the park lock cable.
