DIAGNOSTIC STARTING POINT

Begin the system diagnosis with the diagnostic system check. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. The diagnostic system check will provide the following information

  1. Identification of the control modules which command the system.
  2. The ability of the control modules to communicate through the serial data circuit.
  3. Identification of any stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) and their status.

The use of the diagnostic system check will identify the correct procedure for diagnosing the system and where the procedure is located. If no DTCs are present, attempt diagnosis by symptom. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS .

SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS

Note. Review the system in order to familiarize yourself with the system functions. See DESCRIPTION & OPERATION .

Visual/Physical Inspection

Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the automatic transmission shift lock control system. Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom.

Symptom List

Refer to a symptom diagnostic procedure from the following list in order to diagnose the symptom

  1. Reverse Lockout System Inoperative
  2. Shift Lever Does Not Move With Brake Pedal Depressed
  3. Shift Lever Can Be Moved Without Brake Pedal Depressed

See appropriate test under SYMPTOM TESTS .

Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Install a scan tool. Does the scan tool power up? If so, go to next step. If not, diagnose scan tool concern. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Attempt to establish communication with the DIM and the RIM. Does the scan tool communicate with the DIM and the RIM? If so, go to next step. If not, diagnose body control system. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. NOTE: If vehicle is a 2001 model year, go to step 4 . If vehicle is a 2002 model year, go to next step.
  3. Access the Class 2 Power Mode in the Diagnostic Circuit Check on the scan tool. Rotate the ignition switch through all positions while observing the ignition switch power mode parameter. Does the ignition switch parameter reading match the ignition switch position for all switch positions? If so, go to next step. If not, check for power mode mismatch concern. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  4. Select the display DTCs function on the scan tool for the DIM and the RIM. Does the scan tool display any DTCs for the DIM or the RIM? If so, go to next step. If not, attempt diagnosis by symptom. See «SYMPTOM TESTS»(ref-133004-S05030288672002021100000) .
  5. Does the scan tool display any DTCs which begin with a "U"? If so, diagnose body control system. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If not, go to next step.
  6. Does the scan tool display DTC B1000, B1004, B1007, B1009 or B1010? If so, diagnose body control system. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If not, go to next step.
  7. Does the scan tool display DTC B1327? If so, diagnose charging system. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If not, attempt diagnosis by symptom. See «SYMPTOM TESTS»(ref-133004-S05030288672002021100000) .

SYMPTOM TESTS

CAUTIONUse caution when probing fuses, junction blocks or any connectors. Damage may result to connector receptacle or terminal if probe being used is too large. Electronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damage may result.

SYMPTOM TEST INDEX

TEST A: REVERSE LOCKOUT SYSTEM INOPERATIVE

Note. For circuit reference, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION and WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. Did you perform the diagnostic system check? If so, go to next step. If not, see «DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK»(ref-133004-S07273451292002021100000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Press and hold the brake pedal. Attempt to move the gearshift lever to Reverse position. Does the gearshift lever move to the Reverse position? If so, go to step 6 . If not, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Install a scan tool. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. With a scan tool, observe the reverse lockout drive parameter in the DIM output display data list. Does the scan tool display an OFF status? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 11 .
  4. Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Disconnect the reverse lockout solenoid. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Press and hold the brake pedal. Move the gearshift lever to the Neutral position. Attempt to move the gearshift lever to the Reverse position. Does the gearshift lever move to the Reverse position? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 10 .
  5. Test the reverse lockout solenoid control circuit (Light Green wire) for a short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 15 . If not, go to step 11 .
  6. With a scan tool, command the reverse lockout drive parameter ON in the DIM special functions output control data list. Press and hold the brake pedal. Move the gearshift lever to the Neutral position. Attempt to move the gearshift lever to the Park position. Does the gearshift lever move to the Reverse position? If so, go to next step. If not, check for an intermittent condition. See «SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS»(ref-133004-S28031955092002021100000) .
  7. Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Disconnect the reverse lockout solenoid. Connect a test light between ground and the reverse lockout solenoid voltage supply circuit (Dark Green/White wire). Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 12 .
  8. Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Connect a test light between the reverse lockout solenoid voltage supply circuit (Dark Green/White wire) and the reverse lockout solenoid control circuit (Pink/Black wire) at the reverse lockout relay connector. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. With a scan tool, command the reverse lockout drive ON and OFF several times. Does the test light turn ON and OFF with each command? If so, go to step 10 . If not, go to next step.
  9. Test for an open or short to battery voltage in the reverse lockout solenoid control circuit (Pink/Black wire). Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 15 . If not, go to step 11 .
  10. Inspect the reverse lockout solenoid for poor connections. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 15 . If not, go to step 13 .
  11. Inspect the DIM for poor connections. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 15 . If not, go to step 14 .
  12. Repair the open in the reverse lockout solenoid voltage supply circuit (Brown wire). After repairs, go to step 15 .
  13. Replace the reverse lockout solenoid. See «FLOOR SHIFT CONTROL ASSEMBLY»(ref-133004-S23738141742002021200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step 15 .
  14. Replace the DIM. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. After repairs, go to next step.
  15. Road test vehicle over 5 MPH for 15 seconds or longer, then retest reverse lockout system operation. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, system is okay. If not, go to step 2 .

TEST B: SHIFT LEVER CAN BE MOVED WITHOUT BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED

Note. For circuit reference, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION and WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. Did you perform the diagnostic system check? If so, go to next step. If not, see «DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK»(ref-133004-S07273451292002021100000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Apply the parking brake and block the wheels. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Attempt to move the gearshift lever out of the Park position. Does the gearshift lever move out of the Park position? If so, go to next step. If not, check for intermittent condition. See «SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS»(ref-133004-S28031955092002021100000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  3. Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Connect a test light between ground and the stoplamp switch voltage supply circuit (Light Green wire) at the stoplamp switch. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 7 .
  4. Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Connect a test light between ground and the shift lock solenoid voltage supply circuit (Dark Green/White wire) at the stoplamp switch. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 13 .
  5. Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Connect a test light between ground and the shift lock solenoid voltage supply circuit (Dark Green/White wire) at the shift lock solenoid. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 17 .
  6. Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Connect a test light between the shift lock solenoid voltage supply circuit (Dark Green/White wire) and the shift lock solenoid ground circuit (Black wire) at the shift lock solenoid. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to step 14 . If not, go to step 18 .
  7. Install a scan tool. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. With a scan tool, observe the PARK RELAY status in the RIM data list. Does the scan tool display ON? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 15 .
  8. Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Disconnect the park relay. Connect a test light between ground and the park relay coil side feed circuit. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 19 .
  9. Connect a test light between ground and the park relay switch side feed circuit. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 20 .
  10. Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Connect a test light between the park relay coil side feed circuit and the park relay control circuit (Pink/Black wire). Turn ignition switch to he ON position. With a scan tool, command the park relay ON and OFF. Does the test light turn ON and OFF with each command? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 12 .
  11. Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper between the switch side feed circuit and the stoplamp switch voltage supply circuit at the park relay. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Apply the parking brake and block the wheels. Attempt to move the gearshift lever out of the Park position without depressing the brake pedal. Did the gearshift lever move out of the Park position? If so, go to step 21 . If not, go to step 16 .
  12. Test for an open or short to battery voltage in the park relay control circuit (Pink/Black wire). Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 26 . If not, go to step 15 .
  13. Inspect the stoplamp switch for poor connections. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 26 . If not, go to step 22 .
  14. Inspect for poor connections at the shift lock control solenoid. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 26 . If not, go to step 23 .
  15. Inspect the RIM for poor connections. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 26 . If not, go to step 25 .
  16. Inspect the park relay for poor connections. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 26 . If not, go to step 24 .
  17. Repair the open or short to ground in the shift lock solenoid voltage supply circuit (Dark Green/White wire). After repairs, go to step 26 .
  18. Repair the open in the shift lock solenoid ground circuit (Black wire). After repairs, go to step 26 .
  19. Repair the open or high resistance in the park relay coil side feed circuit. After repairs, go to step 26 .
  20. Repair the open or high resistance in the park relay switch side feed circuit. After repairs, go to step 26 .
  21. Repair the open or high resistance in the stoplamp switch supply voltage circuit (Light Green wire). After repairs, go to step 26 .
  22. Replace the stoplamp switch. See «STOPLAMP SWITCH»(ref-133004-S18003270062002021100000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step 26 .
  23. Replace the shift lock solenoid. See «SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID»(ref-133004-S03414755902002021100000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step 26 .
  24. Replace the park relay (located in rear fuse block). After repairs, go to step 26 .
  25. Replace the RIM. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. After repairs, go to next step.
  26. Operate the system in order to verify the repair. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, system is okay. If not, go to step 2 .

TEST C: SHIFT LEVER DOES NOT MOVE WITH BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED

Note. For circuit reference, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION and WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. Did you perform the diagnostic system check? If so, go to next step. If not, see «DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK»(ref-133004-S07273451292002021100000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Press and hold the brake pedal. Attempt to move the gearshift lever out of the Park position. Does the gearshift lever move out of the Park position? If so, check for an intermittent condition. See «SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS»(ref-133004-S28031955092002021100000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If not, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Disconnect the shift lock control solenoid. Connect a test light between ground and the shift lock solenoid voltage supply circuit (Dark Green/White wire). Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Depress the brake pedal. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to the next step. If not, go to step 6 .
  4. Test the shift lock solenoid voltage supply circuit (Dark Green/White wire) for a short to voltage. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 9 . If not, go to next step.
  5. Inspect the shift lock control switch for poor connections. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 9 . If not, go to step 7 .
  6. Inspect the shift lock control solenoid for proper adjustment. See «SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID»(ref-133004-S04071265682002021100000) under ADJUSTMENTS. Inspect for poor connections at the shift lock control solenoid. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 9 . If not, go to step 8 .
  7. Replace the stoplamp switch. See «STOPLAMP SWITCH»(ref-133004-S18003270062002021100000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Did you complete the replacement? If so, go to step 9 .
  8. Replace the shift lock solenoid. See «SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID»(ref-133004-S03414755902002021100000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Did you complete the replacement? If so, go to next step.
  9. Operate the vehicle in order to verify the repair. Did you correct the condition? If so, system is okay. If not, go to step 2 .
