INTRODUCTION
The headlights (including DRL) are controlled by the Simplified Wiring System (SWS). For troubleshooting, refer to SWS DIAGNOSIS .
Scheme 40
- Inspect for badly rusted or faulty headlight assemblies.
- These conditions must be corrected before a satisfactory adjustment can be made.
- Inspect tire inflation, and adjust if it is necessary.
- If the fuel tank is not full, place a weight in the trunk of the vehicle to simulate weight of a full tank [3 kg (6.5 pounds) per gallon].
- There should be no other load in the vehicle other than driver or substituted weight of approximately 70 kg (150 pounds) placed in driver's position.
- Thoroughly clean the headlight lenses.
- Place the vehicle on a level floor, perpendicular to a flat screen 7.62 m (25.0 feet) away from the bulb center-marks on the headlight lens.
- Rock vehicle sideways to allow vehicle to assume its normal position.
- Bounce the front suspension through three (3) oscillations by applying the body weight to hood or bumper.
- Four lines of adhesive tape (or equivalent markings) are required on screen or wall: Position a vertical tape or mark so that it is aligned with the vehicle center line. Measure the distance from the center-marks on the headlight lens to the floor (reference value: 637.5 mm). Transfer the measurement to the screen. Horizontal tape or mark on the screen is for reference of vertical adjustment. Measure the distance from the center line of the vehicle to the center of each headlight. Transfer the measurement to the screen. Vertical tape or mark on the screen with reference to the center line of each headlight bulb.
HEADLIGHT ADJUSTMENT
Note. When adjusting headlight, disconnect the other headlight harness.
Scheme 41
- The low beam headlight should project on the screen upper edge of the beam (cut-off).
- If not the case, turn the adjusting screws to achieve the specified low- beam cut-off location on the aiming screen.
Standard value
(Vertical direction) Horizontal center line +/- 50.5 mm (+/- 2.0 inches) (0.38 degrees angle)
| CAUTION | Do not cover a headlight for more than three minutes to prevent the plastic headlight lens deformation. |
Note. There is no horizontal aim adjustment. Horizontal aim is preset and does not require adjustment. High-beam pattern should be correct when the low-beams are adjusted properly.
Scheme 42
INTENSITY MEASUREMENT
- Set the headlights to high-beam
- Using a photometer, and following its manufacturer's instruction manual, measure the headlight center intensity and check to be sure that the limit value is satisfied.
Limit: 40,000 cd or more {When a screen is set 18.3m (60.0 feet) ahead of the vehicle}
Note. When measuring the intensity, maintain an engine speed of 2,000 r/min, with the battery fully charged.
There may be special local regulations pertaining to headlight intensity. Be sure to make any adjustments necessary to satisfy such regulations .
If an illuminometer is used to make the measurements, convert its values to photometer values by using the following formula .
I = Er2 Where
- I = intensity (cd)
- E = illumination (lux)
- r = distance (m) from headlights to illuminometer
| CAUTION | On the headlight not yet adjusted, perform aiming with connector removed and the lights switched off, if applicable. in addition, care should be taken to prevent a change of optical axis when connector is reconnected. Plastic outer lens are equipped with headlights. When lens surface is covered with materials for not penetrating light, headlight operation time should be within 3 minutes. In addition, masking such as taping should not be performed. |
Headlight Bulb
| CAUTION | Do not touch the surface of the bulb with hands or dirty gloves as the bulb may pop after a short time. If the surface does become dirty, clean it with alcohol or thinner, and let it dry thoroughly before installing. |
Scheme 43
- Disconnect the battery.
- Disconnect the connector.
- Remove the socket cover.
- Remove bulb mounting spring to pull out bulb.
- After bulb is replaced, properly reconnect connector.
Position Light Bulb
| CAUTION | Do not touch the bulb surface bare-handed or with dirty gloves. If dirt is attached on surface of the bulb, immediately use alcohol or thinner to remove dirt, and install the bulb after well dried. |
Scheme 44
- Disconnect the connector.
- Screw out the position light socket to pull out position light bulb.
Front Turn-Signal Light bulb
| CAUTION | Do not touch the bulb surface bare-handed or with dirty gloves. If dirt is attached on surface of the bulb, immediately use alcohol or thinner to remove dirt, and install the bulb after well dried. |
Scheme 45
- Disconnect the connector.
- Screw out front turn-signal light socket to pull out front turn-signal light bulb.

Scheme 48
- Remove the splash shield, the radiator grill, the front bumper assembly installation clips, the screws and the bolts as shown.
- Slide the front bumper assembly and remove the headlight assembly.
