Removal & Installation

Disconnect battery. See INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY. Remove nut and bolt (1) securing control unit mounting bracket. Release control unit mounting bracket and disconnect connector (2). During replacement, remove nuts (3) securing control unit to mounting bracket. Remove control unit (4) from mounting bracket. (Scheme 1)

Note. After completion of work check transmission fluid level.

CAUTIONUse only the approved transmission fluid in this automatic transmission. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the automatic transmission. Drain oil only when transmission has cooled.
  1. Remove PAS reservoir retaining nuts (1) and remove reservoir from bulkhead. (Scheme 2)
  2. Remove underbody protection. Remove front left wheel arch liner. Remove both crush tubes. Remove lower stabilizer retaining bolts (1) and (2). (Scheme 3) Locate transmission hydraulic jack (1) to subframe jacking point (2). (Scheme 4) Remove bolts (1) retaining left and right compliance bushings housing (2) to body. (Scheme 5) Remove left and right subframe center bolts (1) to body. (Scheme 6)
  3. Disconnect head lamp position sensor connector (1) (if fitted). (Scheme 7) Release left and right bolts (1) approximately 10 mm and lower subframe. (Scheme 8) Do not remove hydraulic transmission jack during this process. Remove underbody protection retaining clip (1). (Scheme 9)
  4. Drain transmission oil. Remove oil pan retaining bolts in sequence (13-1) and remove oil pan. (Scheme 10) Remove oil pan gasket. Clean sealing faces. Tighten oil pan retaining in sequence (1-13). Note the correct location of oil screen onto the valve block. (Scheme 11)

Note. Numbers in text refer to numbers in figures.

Note. After completing work, check/top up fluid level in automatic transmission.

CAUTIONIt is absolutely essential to use the approved BMW automatic transmission fluid (ATF) Esso CVT Fluid EZL 799. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the automatic transmission.

Remove transmission fluid sump. (Scheme 13) Pull the transmission oil screen to remove from valve block. Note the location of oil screen onto valve block. Remove magnet from location point (1). Clean magnet. Replace oil screen and install magnet. Lubricate sealing ring (2) with clean ATF. (Scheme 14) Note the correct location of magnet on oil screen.

Disconnect connector from inhibitor switch. Remove inhibitor switch from gearbox. Note location of 1) electrical connector, inhibitor switch, 3) oil pan, and 4) sealing ring on inhibitor switch. Fit new sealing to inhibitor switch and lubricate.

CAUTIONGear knob will be released suddenly, keep face clear of gear knob during removal.

Note. Do not twist knob during removal as this would cause the turning lock in the knob to shear off.

Position gear selector lever to neutral. Pull gearknob upwards to disengage turning lock in gear knob from gear selector lever. (Scheme 16)
