SERVICE INTERVALS
Replace transmission fluid every INSPECTION I. See SERVICE INTERVAL REMINDER LIGHT in MAINTENANCE REMINDER LIGHT RESET PROCEDURES article.
CHECKING FLUID LEVEL
Remove splash shield under engine. Remove 3 bolts at bottom of front bumper cover. Unlock splash shield mounting screws. Remove splash shield. Use a 6-mm Allen wrench to remove fill/level check plug. If transmission is full, some fluid will escape. Reinstall plug and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
RECOMMENDED FLUID
Manufacturer recommends Esso EZL 799 (83 22 0 136 376) fluid. DO NOT use ordinary ATF, as transmission damage may result.

- Raise and support front of vehicle. Remove both front wheels. Remove underbody protective plate. Use four screws (2) and washers to hold both front brake discs (1) in position. Apply foot brake and firmly tighten screws (2) to 44 ft. lbs. (60 N.m). (Scheme 17) Move selector lever to position "P". Raise and support entire vehicle.
- There are three filler/drain screw plugs on the CVT gearbox casing: To drain the transmission fluid (bottom) To correct the oil level (side) To pour in the transmission fluid (top, for assembly) Fill transmission fluid through hole at side. The filler screw plug at the top of the gearbox is provided for other purposes. Remove drain plug (1) from oil sump. (Scheme 18) After releasing screw plug (1), excess transmission fluid will flow out of the correction hole. Undo screw plug (1). (Scheme 19)
- Screw in drain plug. Using Special Tool (24 81 00), pump 4.5L of oil via correction hole into gearbox. (Scheme 20) Close valve of hydraulic unit so that no oil can flow in any direction. Lower vehicle sufficiently so that gearbox can be shifted into "D". CAUTION: Use particular care while carrying out the following jobs. Make sure there is sufficient space between the driven brake discs and floor as it is necessary to shift through all drive stages. Switch off traction control before shifting selector lever (depending on version). Make sure the hand brake is firmly applied. Connect exhaust gas extractor.
- Apply foot brake. Start engine. Run engine for 10 seconds. Move selector lever out of position "P". NOTE: Air can be heard to circulate in the system during initial operation. This is a normal operating noise.
- Shift through all drive stages, allowing the selector lever to remain in each position for 5 seconds Move selector lever to position "D". Release foot brake. It is sufficient to lightly press the accelerator pedal (engine speed less than 2500 RPM) in order to shift through all gear ratios of the transmission. Leave transmission in 6th gear for about 3 seconds. Repeat this procedure twice.
- Apply foot brake. Move selector lever to position "R" after about 2 seconds. Release foot brake. It is sufficient to lightly press the accelerator pedal in order to shift through all gear ratios of the transmission. Repeat this procedure twice.
- Apply foot brake Move selector lever to position 'P' after about 2 seconds. Switch off engine.
- Connect diagnosis system and check transmission fluid temperature. Leave engine running and raise vehicle. At oil temperature between 86-122°F (30-50°C), detach hydraulic unit and Special Tool (24 8 100).
- The gearbox is probably not completely filled if no oil flows out of the correction hole. Reconnect Special Tool (24 8 100) and pump additional oil into gearbox. Detach Special Tool (24 8 100) and wait until oil overflows and then reattach screw plug. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168981-S32476118702004112300000). If the screw plug is not fitted correctly, oil will continue to flow out of the screw plug as it expands as the temperature increases. This will cause the oil level to drop (gearbox damage).
