Heating and Ventilation

The heating and ventilation system has the following features

  1. Controls the temperature and, during A/C operation, reduces the relative humidity of the air inside the vehicle.
  2. Delivers heated or cooled air to maintain the vehicle interior temperature and comfort level.
  3. Controls the blower motor speed.
  4. Cooling or heating can be adjusted to maintain the desired temperature.
  5. On vehicles with dual-zone temperature control systems, the temperature can be adjusted individually by the driver and passenger.

Heater Core

The heater core consists of fins and tubes arranged to extract heat from the engine coolant and transfer it to air passing through the heater core.

Blower Motor

The blower motor pulls air from the air inlet and forces it into the heater core and evaporator core housing and the plenum chamber where it is mixed and distributed.

Heater Core and Evaporator Core Housing

The heater core and evaporator core housing directs airflow from the blower motor through the evaporator core and heater core. All airflow from the blower motor passes through the evaporator core. The airflow is then directed through or around the heater core by the temperature blend door(s).

  1. Lower the glove compartment.
  2. Detach the electrical connector.
  3. Disconnect the blower motor electrical connector.
  4. Remove the 3 blower motor screws.
  5. Remove the blower motor wheel clip.
  6. Remove the blower motor wheel.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Note. Installation of a new suction accumulator is not required when repairing the air conditioning system, except when there is physical evidence of system contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the suction accumulator.

Note. If an evaporator core leak is suspected, the evaporator core must be vacuum leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle.

  1. Drain the engine coolant. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-234494) .
  2. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-234501) .
  3. Remove the wiper motor and pivot assembly. For additional information, refer to «WIPERS AND WASHERS»(ref-234530) .
  4. Remove the instrument panel. For additional information, refer to «INSTRUMENT PANEL AND CONSOLE»(ref-234528) .
  5. Remove the 2 fresh air inlet duct nuts.
  6. Remove the fresh air inlet duct.
  7. Disconnect the evaporator core outlet fitting. Discard the O-ring seals.
  8. Disconnect the evaporator core inlet fitting. Discard the O-ring seals.
  9. Remove the cowl drain tube nut.
  10. Remove the cowl drain tube pin-type retainers.
  11. Remove the cowl drain tube.
  12. Disconnect the 2 heater hoses at the heater core.
  13. Remove the 4 heater core and evaporator core housing nuts.
  14. Remove the heater core and evaporator core housing support bracket bolt.
  15. Remove the heater core and evaporator core housing support bracket nut.
  16. Remove the heater core and evaporator core housing support bracket.
  17. Remove the rear seat floor duct adapter.
  18. Remove the heater core and evaporator core housing.
  19. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new O-ring seals lubricated in clean mineral oil. Lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-234501) .
  20. Fill the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-234494) .
  21. Evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-234501) .
