TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
The Electronic Ignition (EI) system is a coil-on-plug ignition system. The coil-on-plug ignition system consists of the
- coil-on-plugs.
- spark plugs.
- Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor.
- Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor.
The coil-on-plugs
- change low voltage signals from the PCM to high voltage pulses.
- supply the high voltage pulses to the spark plugs.
- are connected directly to each spark plug.
- have replaceable coil boots.
The spark plugs
- change high voltage pulses into a spark which ignites the fuel and air mixture.
The CKP sensor
- is a variable reluctance sensor.
- is triggered by a 36-minus-1 tooth trigger wheel mounted on the crankshaft.
- provides base timing and crankshaft speed (rpm) to the PCM.
The CMP sensor
- is a variable reluctance sensor.
- provides camshaft rotational location information to the PCM.

- Disconnect the 4 ignition coil electrical connectors.
- Remove the 4 bolts and the ignition coils. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
- Inspect the coil seals for rips, nicks or tears. Remove and discard any damaged coil seals. To install, slide the new coil seal onto the coil until fully seated at the top of the coil.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of the ignition coil boots before attaching to the spark plugs.
Removal and Installation
- Remove the ignition coils. For additional information, refer to «IGNITION COIL-ON-PLUG»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/ignition-system/#engine-ignition-25l) in this service information.
- Remove the spark plugs. To install, tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).
- Inspect the spark plugs. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE MECHANICAL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-system-general-information) article.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Adjust the spark plug gap as necessary.
