TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
The Electronic Ignition (EI) system is a coil-on-plug ignition system. The coil-on-plug ignition system consists of the
- Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor.
- Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor.
- ignition coil-on-plugs.
- spark plugs.
The CMP sensor
- is a Hall-effect sensor.
- is mounted in the front cover.
- is triggered by the high point mark on the intake camshaft trigger wheel.
- provides camshaft rotational location information to the PCM.
The CKP sensor
- is a variable reluctance sensor.
- is triggered by a 36-minus-1 tooth trigger wheel mounted on the crankshaft.
- provides base timing and crankshaft speed (rpm) to the PCM.
The ignition coil-on-plugs
- change low voltage signals from the PCM to high voltage pulses.
- supplies the high voltage pulses to the spark plugs.
- are connected directly to each spark plug.
The spark plugs
- change high voltage pulses into a spark which ignites the fuel and air mixture.

Removal and Installation
LH side
- Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL). For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING - 3.0L (4V)»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/removal-installation/#intake-air-distribution-and-filtering-30l-4v) article. RH side
- Remove the upper intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE MECHANICAL - 3.0L (4V)»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-4v) article. Both sides
- Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connectors.
- Remove the bolts and the ignition coils. To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of the ignition coil boots before attaching to the spark plugs.
- Remove the ignition coils. For additional information, refer to «IGNITION COIL-ON-PLUG»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/ignition-system/#engine-ignition-30l-4v) in this service information.
- Remove the spark plugs. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
- Inspect the spark plugs. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE MECHANICAL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-system-general-information) article.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Adjust the gap as necessary.
