TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

The Electronic Ignition (EI) system is a coil-on-plug ignition system. The coil-on-plug ignition system consists of the

  1. Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor.
  2. Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor.
  3. ignition coil-on-plugs.
  4. spark plugs.

The CMP sensor

  1. is a Hall-effect sensor.
  2. is mounted in the front cover.
  3. is triggered by the high point mark on the intake camshaft trigger wheel.
  4. provides camshaft rotational location information to the PCM.

The CKP sensor

  1. is a variable reluctance sensor.
  2. is triggered by a 36-minus-1 tooth trigger wheel mounted on the crankshaft.
  3. provides base timing and crankshaft speed (rpm) to the PCM.

The ignition coil-on-plugs

  1. change low voltage signals from the PCM to high voltage pulses.
  2. supplies the high voltage pulses to the spark plugs.
  3. are connected directly to each spark plug.

The spark plugs

  1. change high voltage pulses into a spark which ignites the fuel and air mixture.

Removal and Installation

LH side

  1. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL). For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING - 3.0L (4V)»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/removal-installation/#intake-air-distribution-and-filtering-30l-4v) article. RH side
  2. Remove the upper intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE MECHANICAL - 3.0L (4V)»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-30l-4v) article. Both sides
  3. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connectors.
  4. Remove the bolts and the ignition coils. To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  1. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of the ignition coil boots before attaching to the spark plugs.
  1. Remove the ignition coils. For additional information, refer to «IGNITION COIL-ON-PLUG»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/ignition-system/#engine-ignition-30l-4v) in this service information.
  2. Remove the spark plugs. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  3. Inspect the spark plugs. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE MECHANICAL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-system-general-information) article.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  1. Adjust the gap as necessary.
