Note. The Smart Junction Box (SJB) is also known as the Generic Electronic Module (GEM).
The SJB controls all of the interior lighting functions. The interior lighting system consists of the following components
- SJB
- Instrument panel dimmer switch
- Interior lamps
- Vanity mirror lamps
- Door ajar switches (integrated into the door latch)
- Liftgate ajar switch (integrated into the liftgate latch)
- Liftgate glass ajar switch (integrated into the liftgate glass latch)
- Ambient lighting switch (if equipped)
- Ambient lighting module (if equipped) (mounted under the bottom of the floor console finish panel storage tray)
The interior lighting system may consist of up to 3 subsystems
- Courtesy lamps
- Demand lamps
- Ambient lighting (if equipped)
Courtesy Lamps
The courtesy lamp subsystem consists of the ajar switches, the interior dome lamps, the instrument panel dimmer switch and the SJB . The SJB supplies voltage to the courtesy lamps when the SJB receives the required input.
Demand Lamps
The demand lamps are provided voltage from the battery saver relay (internal to the SJB ). The demand lamps subsystem consists of the map/reading lamps, cargo lamp and the LH and RH vanity mirror lamps. The SJB energizes the battery saver relay to supply voltage to the demand lamps.
Ambient Lighting
The ambient lighting system consists of the ambient lighting switch, the ambient lighting module, and the harness with hard-wired LEDs located within the front and rear footwells, the floor console cup holders, the storage tray and the storage bin. The ambient lighting is powered on when the ignition key is in the RUN or ACCESSORY position. The ambient lighting switch is used to cycle the LEDs through 7 different color combinations or to turn the ambient lighting off. The ambient lighting module provides the necessary voltage to the LEDs to illuminate the cup holders, the storage tray bin and the front and rear footwell areas.
Interior Mode
The interior courtesy lamps turn on when the instrument panel dimmer switch is rotated to the DOME LAMP position. When the instrument panel dimmer switch is not in the DOME LAMP position, the interior courtesy lamps are activated by other interior lighting features.
The cargo lamp does not illuminate when the cargo lamp switch is in the OFF position when the courtesy lamps are activated. For the cargo lamp to illuminate in conjunction with the courtesy lamps, the cargo lamp switch must be in the DOOR position.
Dome Defeat
When the instrument panel dimmer switch is in the DOME DEFEAT position, the illuminated entry and exit features do not turn the courtesy lamps on, however the timer for each feature is still active. If the instrument panel dimmer switch is moved out of the DOME DEFEAT position before the 25-second timer expires, the courtesy lamps are illuminated until the 25-second timer has elapsed.
Interior Lighting Delay
When the dome defeat feature is not active, the interior lighting delay feature provides temporary illumination of the courtesy lamps after the doors are opened and then closed. The interior lighting delay feature keeps the courtesy lamps, the parking lamps and the dimmable backlighting on for a period of 25 seconds after all the doors are closed. If during the 25-second delay time the SJB detects that the ignition has been switched out of OFF, or if the vehicle is locked using the RKE transmitter or the keypad, the courtesy lamp illumination is discontinued.
Illuminated Entry
The illuminated entry requests the courtesy lamps, the parking lamps and the dimmable backlighting to illuminate when the ignition is OFF and either the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter UNLOCK button is pressed, or the vehicle is unlocked using the keyless entry keypad. The illuminated entry requests the courtesy lamps off
- after 25 seconds have elapsed.
- the ignition is switched out of OFF.
- the RKE transmitter LOCK button is pressed.
- the vehicle is locked using the keypad.
Illuminated Exit
The illuminated exit requests the courtesy lamps, the parking lamps and the dimmable backlighting to illuminate for 25 seconds when all doors are closed and the ignition key is removed from the ignition lock cylinder. The illuminated exit deactivates
- when the ignition key is inserted into the ignition lock cylinder.
- a door becomes ajar.
- 25 seconds have elapsed.
Theater Lighting
The theater lighting feature ramps-up the courtesy lamps over 0.7 second when courtesy lamp activation is requested. The theater lighting feature ramps-down the courtesy lamps over 1.7 seconds when interior lighting deactivation is requested by any feature other than the panic alarm or battery saver.
Battery Saver
Note. Time-out is 1 minute if the vehicle has less than 80 km (50 miles).
The SJB provides automatic shut-off of the demand lamps and courtesy lamps after a 10-minute time-out period in order to save battery voltage. A timer in the SJB is started when the ignition is turned to the OFF position and all the doors, liftgate and liftgate window are closed. When 10 minutes has elapsed, voltage is automatically shut off to the lamps by the SJB . While the SJB has voltage disabled, if the ignition is turned to any position other than OFF, any door, liftgate or liftgate window becomes ajar, the UNLOCK button of the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter is pressed or the instrument panel dimmer switch is rotated to the DOME LAMP position, the SJB restores voltage and starts the timer again.

Principles of Operation
Note. The Smart Junction Box (SJB) is also known as the Generic Electronic Module (GEM).
The SJB supplies voltage to the interior lighting system. When the instrument panel dimmer switch is not in the DOME DEFEAT position and a vehicle door is ajar with the vehicle speed less than 15 km/h (9 mph), or the instrument panel dimmer switch is in the DOME LAMP position, the SJB provides voltage to the courtesy lamp circuit. The SJB controls all interior lighting functions and timing by monitoring inputs from the door ajar switches, liftgate and liftgate ajar switches, the instrument panel dimmer switch and vehicle speed.
Interior Lamp Arbitrator
The SJB chooses between the interior lighting, dome defeat, interior lighting delay, illuminated entry, illuminated exit and battery saver to determine which feature has precedence of activating and deactivating the interior lamps.
The ambient lighting module provides voltage and ground to the LEDs. There are 3 different color (red, blue and green) LEDs housed within each LED assembly. By illuminating various color combinations, the LEDs are able to produce 7 different colors of ambient light. The ambient lighting switch is an input to the ambient lighting module. With each press of the ambient lighting switch, the ambient lighting module cycles through a different color variation or turns the ambient lighting feature off. The module retains the last color setting between uses.
Field-Effect Transistor (FET) Protection
Field-Effect Transistor (FET) is a type of transistor that when used with module software can be used to monitor and control current flow on module outputs. The FET protection strategy is used to prevent module damage in the event of excessive current flow.
The SJB utilizes an FET protective circuit strategy for many of its outputs (for example, a headlamp output circuit). Output loads (current level) are monitored for excessive current (typically short circuits) and are shut down (turns off the voltage or ground provided by the module) when a fault event is detected. A continuous DTC is stored at the fault event and a cumulative counter is started.
When the demand for the output is no longer present, the module resets the FET circuit protection to allow the circuit to function. The next time the driver requests a circuit to activate that has been shut down by a previous short ( FET protection) and the circuit remains shorted, the FET protection shuts off the circuit again and the cumulative counter advances.
When the excessive circuit load occurs often enough, the module shuts down the output until a repair procedure is carried out. Each FET protected circuit has 3 predefined levels of short circuit tolerance based on the harmful effect of each circuit fault on the FET and the ability of the FET to withstand it. A module lifetime level of fault events is established based upon the durability of the FET . If the total tolerance level is determined to be 600 fault events, the 3 predefined levels would be 200, 400 and 600 fault events.
When each tolerance level is reached, the continuous DTC that was stored on the first failure cannot be cleared by a command to clear the continuous DTCs. The module does not allow this code to be cleared or the circuit restored to normal operation until a successful self-test proves that the fault has been repaired. After the self-test has successfully completed (no on-demand DTCs present), DTC B106E and the associated continuous DTC (the DTC related to the shorted circuit) automatically clears and the circuit function returns.
When the first or second level is reached, the continuous DTC (associated with the short circuit) sets along with DTC B106E. These DTCs can be cleared using the module on-demand self-test, then the Clear DTC operation on the scan tool (if the on-demand test shows the fault corrected). The module never resets the fault event counter to zero and continues to advance the fault event counter as short circuit fault events occur.
If the number of short circuit fault events reach the third level, then DTCs B106F and B1342 set along with the associated continuous DTC. This DTC cannot be cleared and the module must be replaced.
The SJB FET protected output circuit for the interior lighting system is the courtesy lamp output circuit.
Inspection and Verification
- Verify the customer concern.
- Visually inspect for obvious signs of electrical damage. - If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
- If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
- If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM : Check the VCM connection to the vehicle. Check the scan tool connection to the VCM . Refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/communication-devices/#module-communications-network) article, No Power To The Scan Tool, to diagnose no power to the scan tool.
- If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: Verify the ignition key is in the ON position. Verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle. Refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/communication-devices/#module-communications-network) article to diagnose no response from the PCM.
- Carry out the network test. If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/communication-devices/#module-communications-network) article. If the network test passes, retrieve and record the continuous memory DTCs.
- Clear the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the SJB .
- If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to «DTC CHARTS»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/interiorillumination-lights/#interior-lighting-system__dtc-charts) . For all other DTCs, refer to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart in «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULE»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-module) article.
- If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, Go to «SYMPTOM CHART»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/interiorillumination-lights/#interior-lighting-system__symptom-chart) .

Pinpoint Test A: The Courtesy Lamps Do Not Illuminate With A Door Open

Normal Operation
The Smart Junction Box (SJB) sends a voltage signal to the door ajar switches. The door ajar switch is closed with the door closed. When the door is opened, the signal to ground is interrupted indicating an open door to the SJB .
The SJB also sends a voltage signal to the instrument panel dimmer switch to monitor the dome defeat input request. When the instrument panel dimmer switch is in the DOME DEFEAT position, the signal is routed to ground indicating a request for the dome defeat feature.
When any door is opened, a correct unlock code from the keyless entry keypad or an unlock request from a programmed Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter is detected, the SJB provides voltage to the courtesy lamps unless the dome defeat from the instrument panel dimmer switch is detected.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Door ajar switch (integrated into the door latch)
- Instrument panel dimmer switch
- SJB
Note. Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
Note. Make sure the instrument panel dimmer switch is not in the DOME DEFEAT position before continuing diagnostics.

- A1 CHECK THE COURTESY LAMP OPERATION FROM THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DIMMER SWITCH Ignition OFF. Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the DOME LAMP position. Do the courtesy lamps illuminate? Yes: Go to A2 . No: Go to «PINPOINT TEST E»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/interiorillumination-lights/#interior-lighting-system__pinpoint-test-e-the-interior-courtesy) .
- A2 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DIMMER SWITCH PID Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch out of the DOME LAMP position. Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: SJB DataLogger. NOTE: The DOME_DEF PID should indicate All if the switch is in the DOME DEFEAT position and Undefined if it is not. Monitor the SJB instrument panel dimmer switch PID (DOME_DEF). Does the PID indicate Undefined? Yes: Go to A5 . No: Go to A3 .
- A3 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DIMMER SWITCH Disconnect: Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch C2065. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: SJB DataLogger. Monitor the SJB instrument panel dimmer switch PID (DOME_DEF). Does the PID indicate Undefined? Yes: INSTALL a new instrument panel dimmer switch. Refer to «INSTRUMENT CLUSTER ILLUMINATION & INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATION»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-cluster-illumination-instrument-panel-illumination) article. TEST the system for normal operation. No: Go to A4 .
- A4 CHECK THE DOME DEFEAT INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Ignition OFF. Disconnect: SJB C2280b. Measure the resistance between the instrument panel dimmer switch C2065-2, circuit CLN27 (WH/BN), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes: Go to A8 . No: REPAIR circuit CLN27 (WH/BN) for a short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A5 CHECK THE DOOR AJAR PIDs Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: SJB DataLogger. Monitor the SJB door ajar switch PIDs (D_DR_SW, P_DR_SW, LRDR_SW, and RRDR_SW) while opening and closing all the doors. Do all the door ajar switch PID values agree with the door positions? Yes: Go to A8 . No: Go to A6 .
- A6 CHECK THE DOOR AJAR SWITCH OPERATION Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Suspect Door Ajar Switch . Do the courtesy lamps illuminate? Yes: INSTALL a new door ajar switch in question. Refer to «HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES & KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#handles-locks-latches-keyless-entry-system) article. TEST the system for normal operation. No: Go to A7 .
- A7 CHECK THE DOOR AJAR SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: SJB C2280c. - A8 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION Disconnect all the SJB connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: INSTALL a new SJB . Refer to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULE»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-module) article. TEST the system for normal operation. No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
Pinpoint Test B: The Courtesy Lamps Do Not Illuminate With the Liftgate Or Liftgate Window Open

The Smart Junction Box (SJB) sends a voltage signal to the liftgate ajar switch. The voltage signal passes through the liftgate ajar switch to the liftgate window ajar switch. The signal is then routed to ground.
The liftgate and the liftgate window ajar switches are wired in series and are monitored from a single circuit by the SJB . The liftgate and liftgate window ajar switches are closed when the liftgate and liftgate window are closed. When the liftgate or liftgate window is opened, the ajar switch opens and the signal to ground is interrupted indicating an open liftgate or liftgate window (the SJB cannot determine which is open).
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Liftgate ajar switch (integrated into the liftgate latch)
- Liftgate window ajar switch (integrated into the liftgate window latch)
- SJB
Note. Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

- B2 CHECK THE COURTESY LAMP OPERATION FROM THE LIFTGATE AND THE LIFTGATE WINDOW Open and close the liftgate. Open and close the liftgate window. Are the courtesy lamps inoperative from both the liftgate and the liftgate window? Yes: Go to B4 . No: If the courtesy lamps are inoperative from the liftgate, INSTALL a new liftgate ajar switch. Refer to «HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES & KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#handles-locks-latches-keyless-entry-system) article. TEST the system for normal operation. If the courtesy lamps are inoperative from the liftgate window, Go to B3 .
- B3 CHECK THE COURTESY LAMP OPERATION FROM THE LIFTGATE AND THE LIFTGATE WINDOW Disconnect: Liftgate Window Ajar Switch C479. Do the courtesy lamps illuminate? Yes: INSTALL a new liftgate window latch. Refer to «HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES & KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#handles-locks-latches-keyless-entry-system) article. TEST the system for normal operation. No: REPAIR circuit CPL44 (YE/OG) for a short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.
- B4 CHECK THE LIFTGATE/LIFTGATE WINDOW AJAR INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: SJB C2280c. Disconnect: Liftgate Ajar Switch C478. Measure the resistance between the liftgate ajar switch C478-2, circuit CPL58 (GY/OG), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes: Go to B5 . No: REPAIR circuit CPL58 (GY/OG) for a short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.
- B5 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION Disconnect all the SJB connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: INSTALL a new SJB . Pinpoint Test C: The Courtesy Lamps Do Not Illuminate From The Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch

The Smart Junction Box (SJB) monitors the instrument panel dimmer switch status to determine if the courtesy lamps are requested. When the instrument panel dimmer switch is rotated to the DOME LAMP position, the SJB supplies voltage to the courtesy lamps.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Instrument panel dimmer switch
- SJB
Note. Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

- C1 CHECK THE DIMMABLE BACKLIGHTING OPERATION Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position. Monitor the instrument panel dimmable backlighting while rotating the instrument panel dimmer switch from full on to full off. Does the dimmable backlighting intensity change with the instrument panel dimmer switch position? Yes: Go to C2 . No: Refer to «INSTRUMENT CLUSTER ILLUMINATION & INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATION»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-cluster-illumination-instrument-panel-illumination) article.
- C2 BYPASS THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DIMMER SWITCH Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch C2065. Connect a fused jumper wire between the instrument panel dimmer switch C2065-5, circuit CLN17 (BN), harness side and the instrument panel dimmer switch C2065-4, circuit CLN04 (BU/BN), harness side. Do the courtesy lamps illuminate? Yes: REMOVE the jumper wire. INSTALL a new instrument panel dimmer switch. Refer to «INSTRUMENT CLUSTER ILLUMINATION & INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATION»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-cluster-illumination-instrument-panel-illumination) article. TEST the system for normal operation. No: REMOVE the jumper wire. Go to C3 .
- C3 CHECK THE DOME LAMP REQUEST INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Disconnect: SJB C2280b. Measure the resistance between the SJB C2280b-51, circuit CLN17 (BN), harness side and the instrument panel dimmer switch C2065-5, circuit CLN17 (BN), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes: Go to C4 . No: REPAIR circuit CLN17 (BN) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
- C4 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION Disconnect all the SJB connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: INSTALL a new SJB . Refer to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULE»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-module) article. TEST the system for normal operation. No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
Pinpoint Test D: The Dome Defeat Feature Is Inoperative
Refer to SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article, Cluster and Panel Illumination for schematic and connector information.
The Smart Junction Box (SJB) sends a voltage signal to the instrument panel dimmer switch to monitor the dome defeat input request. When the instrument panel dimmer switch is in the DOME DEFEAT position, the signal is routed to ground indicating a request for the dome defeat feature.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Instrument panel dimmer switch
- SJB

- D1 BYPASS THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DIMMER SWITCH Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch C2065. Connect a fused jumper wire between the instrument panel dimmer switch C2065-2, circuit CLN27 (WH/BN), harness side and the instrument panel dimmer switch C2065-4, circuit CLN04 (BU/BN), harness side. Close and then open any door. Do the courtesy lamps illuminate? Yes: REMOVE the jumper wire. Go to D2 . No: REMOVE the jumper wire. INSTALL a new instrument panel dimmer switch. - D2 CHECK THE DOME DEFEAT INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Disconnect: SJB C2280b. Measure the resistance between the instrument panel dimmer switch C2298-2, circuit CLN27 (WH/BN), harness side and the SJB C2280b-36, circuit CLN27 (WH/BN), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes: Go to D3 . No: REPAIR circuit CLN27 (WH/BN) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
- D3 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION Disconnect all the SJB connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: INSTALL a new SJB . Pinpoint Test E: The Interior Courtesy Lamp(s) Are Inoperative
Refer to SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article, Interior Lamps for schematic and connector information.
Power is supplied to the interior courtesy lamps and cargo lamp through the Smart Junction Box (SJB) fuse 9 (15A). Based on the input status from the ajar switches and the instrument panel dimmer switch, the SJB supplies voltage to the interior courtesy lamp(s).
- DTC B2A35 (Interior Lighting Output Circuit Open) - an on-demand DTC that sets when the SJB detects an open from the courtesy lighting output circuit.
- DTC B2A36 (Interior Lighting Output Circuit Short to Ground) - a continuous and on-demand DTC that sets when the SJB detects a short to ground from the courtesy lighting output circuit.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
- Fuse
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Interior lamp
- SJB
Note. Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
Note. Make sure the interior lamp switch is in the DOOR position before carrying out diagnostics.

- E1 CHECK THE OPERATION OF ALL THE COURTESY LAMPS Ignition OFF. Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the DOME LAMP position and observe the interior courtesy lamps. Are all the interior courtesy lamps inoperative? Yes: VERIFY the SJB fuse 9 (15A) is OK. If OK, Go to E4 . If not OK, Refer to the «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-395046) article to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. After the repair: If no DTCs are present, TEST the system for normal operation. If DTC B106E is present, CLEAR the DTCs and REPEAT the self-test (required to enable the courtesy lamp output driver if DTC B106E is present) . TEST the system for normal operation. - E2 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE INTERIOR LAMP Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch out of the DOME LAMP position. Disconnect: Inoperative Courtesy Lamp . Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the DOME LAMP position. - E4 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE DEMAND LIGHTING Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch out of the DOME LAMP position. Ignition ON. Operate the demand lighting function on any courtesy lamp. Does the lamp illuminate with the demand lighting function? Yes: Go to E5 . No: REPAIR circuit GD182 (BK/GY) for an open. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- E5 BYPASS THE SJB Ignition OFF. Disconnect: SJB C2280a. NOTE: If the jumper wire fails, Refer to the «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-395046) article to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. After the repair: If no DTCs are present, test the system for normal operation. If DTC B106E is present, clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test (required to enable the courtesy lamp output driver if DTC B106E is present) . Test the system for normal operation. If DTC B106F is present, install a new SJB . Refer to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULE»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-module) article. Test the system for normal operation. Connect a fused jumper wire between the SJB C2280a-9, circuit VLN33 (GY/VT), harness side and battery positive. Do the courtesy lamps illuminate? Yes: REMOVE the jumper wire. Go to E6 . No: REMOVE the jumper wire. REPAIR the circuit VLN33 (GY/VT) for an open. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- E6 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION Disconnect all the SJB connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: INSTALL a new SJB . Normal Operation - Door Ajar Input
The Smart Junction Box (SJB) sends a voltage signal to the door ajar switches. The door ajar switch is closed with the door closed. When the door is opened, the signal to ground is interrupted indicating an open door to the SJB .
Liftgate/Liftgate Window Ajar Input
The SJB sends a voltage signal to the liftgate ajar switch. The voltage signal passes through the liftgate ajar switch to the liftgate window ajar switch. The signal is then routed to ground.
The liftgate and the liftgate window ajar switches are wired in series and are monitored from a single circuit by the SJB . The liftgate and liftgate window ajar switches are closed when the liftgate and liftgate window are closed. When the liftgate or liftgate window is opened, the signal to ground is interrupted indicating an open liftgate or liftgate window (the SJB cannot determine which is open).
Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch Input
The SJB monitors the instrument panel dimmer switch status to determine if the courtesy lamps are requested. When the instrument panel dimmer switch is rotated to the DOME LAMP position, ground is supplied.
The SJB supplies voltage to the interior courtesy lamp(s) when any of the following conditions exist
- Any door, liftgate or liftgate window is opened.
- The instrument panel dimmer switch is place in the DOME LAMP position.
- A correct unlock code from the keyless entry keypad or an unlock request from a programmed Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter is detected.

- F3 CHECK THE SJB INSTRUMENT PANEL DIMMER SWITCH DOME LAMP REQUEST PID Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: SJB DataLogger. Monitor the SJB instrument panel dimmer switch dome lamp request PID (DOMELM_SW). Does the PID indicate the instrument panel dimmer switch is in the DOME LAMP position? Yes: Go to F4 . No: Go to F6 .
- F4 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DIMMER SWITCH Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch C2065. Close all the doors and wait 30 seconds. Do the courtesy lamps continue to illuminate? Yes: Go to F5 . No: INSTALL a new instrument panel dimmer switch. Refer to «INSTRUMENT CLUSTER ILLUMINATION & INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATION»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-cluster-illumination-instrument-panel-illumination) article. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- F5 CHECK THE DOME LAMP REQUEST INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: SJB C2280b. Measure the resistance between the instrument panel dimmer switch C2065-5, circuit CLN17 (BN), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes: Go to F16 . No: REPAIR circuit CLN17 (BN) for a short to ground. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- F6 CHECK THE SJB DOOR AJAR PIDs Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: SJB DataLogger. Monitor the SJB door ajar switch PIDs (D_DR_SW, P_DR_SW, LRDR_SW, and RRDR_SW) while opening and closing all the doors. Do all the door ajar switch PID values agree with the door positions? Yes: Go to F10 . No: Go to F7 .
- F7 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE DOOR AJAR SWITCH Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Suspect Door Ajar Switch. - F11 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE LIFTGATE WINDOW AJAR SWITCH Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Liftgate Window Ajar Switch C479. NOTE: Make sure the liftgate is closed for correct test results. Measure the voltage between the liftgate window ajar switch C479-3, circuit CPL44 (YE/OG), harness side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: Go to F12 . No: Go to F13 .
- F12 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE LIFTGATE WINDOW AJAR SWITCH USING THE CONNECTOR GROUND Measure the voltage between the liftgate window ajar switch C479-3, circuit CPL44 (YE/OG), harness side and the liftgate window ajar switch C479-2, circuit GD182 (BK/GY), harness side. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: INSTALL a new liftgate window latch. - F14 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE LIFTGATE WINDOW AJAR SWITCH USING THE CONNECTOR GROUND NOTE: Make sure the liftgate window switch is connected and the liftgate window is closed for correct test results. Connect: Liftgate Window Ajar Switch C479. Measure the voltage between the liftgate ajar switch C478-2, circuit CPL58 (GY/OG), harness side and the liftgate ajar switch C478-1, circuit CPL44 (YE/OG), harness side. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: INSTALL a new liftgate ajar switch. Yes: Go to F16 . No: REPAIR circuit CPL58 (GY/OG) for an open. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

The Smart Junction Box (SJB) energizes the battery saver relay based on inputs from the ignition key position, the door ajar, liftgate ajar and liftgate window ajar switches, the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter, the keyless entry keypad, and the instrument panel dimmer switch. When the battery saver relay is energized, voltage is supplied to the demand lamps.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
- Fuse
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- SJB
Note. Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
Note. Make sure the courtesy lamps operate before continuing diagnostics.

- G1 CHECK THE OPERATION OF ALL THE DEMAND LAMPS Ignition OFF. Operate and observe each demand lamp (map lamps and vanity lamps). Are all the demand lamps inoperative? Yes: VERIFY the SJB fuse 25 (10A) is OK. If OK, Go to G2 . If not OK, Refer to the «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-395046) article to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. No: Go to «PINPOINT TEST H»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/interiorillumination-lights/#interior-lighting-system__pinpoint-test-h-an-individual-demand) .
- G2 BYPASS THE SJB Disconnect: SJB C2280d. Connect a fused jumper wire between the SJB C2280d-21, circuit CLN09 (YE/GN), harness side and battery positive. Switch on a demand lamp. Does the demand lamp illuminate? Yes: REMOVE the jumper wire. Go to G3 . No: REPAIR circuit CLN09 (YE/GN) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
- G3 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION Disconnect all the SJB connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: INSTALL a new SJB . Refer to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULE»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-module) article. TEST the system for normal operation. No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
Pinpoint Test H: An Individual Demand Lamp Is Inoperative
Refer to SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article, Interior Lamps for schematic and connector information.
When the battery saver relay is energized, voltage is supplied to the demand lamps.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Sun visor
- Interior lamp

Pinpoint Test I: The Battery Saver Does Not Deactivate After Time-Out
Refer to SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article, Interior Lamps for schematic and connector information.
The Smart Junction Box (SJB) controls the battery saver function. The battery saver function provides automatic shutoff of the interior lamps (courtesy lamps and demand lamps) after 10 minutes have elapsed in order to save battery power.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- SJB
- I1 CHECK THE SJB IGNITION SWITCH PIDs Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: SJB DataLogger. Monitor the SJB ignition switch PIDs (IGN_A_ECU, IGN_O_ECU, IGN_R_ECU and IGN_S_ECU) while rotating the ignition switch through all positions. Do the ignition switch PIDs agree with the ignition switch positions? Yes: Go to I2 . No: Refer to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/ignition-switchsteering-lock/#steering-column-switches) article.
- I2 CHECK THE DEMAND LAMP VOLTAGE SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: SJB C2280d. Ignition ON. Switch any demand lamp on. Does the demand lamp illuminate? Yes: REPAIR circuit CLN09 (YE/GN) for a short to voltage. TEST the system for normal operation. No: Go to I3 .
- I3 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION Disconnect all the SJB connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: INSTALL a new SJB . Pinpoint Test J: The Ambient Lighting Is Inoperative
Refer to SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article, Interior Lamps for schematic and connector information.
When the ignition key is in the RUN or ACC position, the ambient lighting module supplies voltage and ground to the LEDs located in the floor console cup holders, storage tray, storage bin and the front and rear footwells. The ambient lighting switch is used to cycle through the 7 color combinations or to turn the ambient lighting feature off. There are 3 different color (red, blue and green) LEDs housed within each LED assembly.
When the ignition key is in the RUN or ACC position, the ambient lighting switch and the ambient lighting module receive voltage. When the ambient lighting switch is pressed, voltage is routed to the ambient lighting module, indicating a request for the module to cycle the ambient lighting to the next setting.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Ambient lighting harness
- Ambient lighting switch
- Ambient lighting module

- J1 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE AMBIENT LIGHTING MODULE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Ambient Lighting Module C3351. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between the ambient lighting module C3351-1, circuit CBX07 (GN/RD), harness side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: Go to J2 . No: REPAIR circuit CBX07 (GN/RD) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
- J2 CHECK THE INPUT FROM THE AMBIENT LIGHTING SWITCH While pressing and releasing the ambient lighting switch, measure the voltage between the ambient lighting module C3351-2, circuit CLN54 (BN/YE), harness side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts with the switch pressed and 0 volts with the switch released? Yes: Go to J3 . No: If voltage is always present, Go to J4 . If no voltage is present, Go to J5 .
- J3 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE AMBIENT LIGHTING MODULE USING THE CONNECTOR GROUND Measure the voltage between the ambient lighting module C3351-1, circuit CBX07 (GN/RD), harness side and the ambient lighting module C3351-8, circuit GD908 (BK), harness side. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: Go to J7 . No: REPAIR circuit GD908 (BK) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
- J4 CHECK THE AMBIENT LIGHTING SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Ambient Lighting Switch C3350. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between the ambient lighting module C3351-2, circuit CLN54 (BN/YE), harness side and ground. Is any voltage present? Yes: REPAIR circuit CLN54 (BN/YE) for a short to voltage. TEST the system for normal operation. No: INSTALL a new ambient lighting switch. Refer to «AMBIENT LIGHTING SWITCH»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/interiorillumination-lights/#interior-lighting-system) in this service information. TEST the system for normal operation.
- J5 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE AMBIENT LIGHTING SWITCH Ignition OFF. Connect: Ambient Lighting Module C3351. Disconnect: Ambient Lighting Switch C3350. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between the ambient lighting switch C3350-2, circuit CBX07 (GN/RD), harness side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: Go to J6 . No: REPAIR CBX07 (GN/RD) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
- J6 BYPASS THE AMBIENT LIGHTING SWITCH Connect and remove a fused jumper wire between the ambient lighting switch C3350-2, circuit CBX07 (GN/RD), harness side and the ambient lighting switch C3350-6, circuit CLN54 (BN/YE), harness side. Do the ambient LEDs illuminate and cycle through a color change each time the jumper wire is connected and removed? Yes: INSTALL a new ambient lighting switch. Refer to «AMBIENT LIGHTING SWITCH»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/interiorillumination-lights/#interior-lighting-system) in this service information. TEST the system for normal operation. No: REPAIR circuit CLN54 (BN/YE) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
- J7 CHECK THE AMBIENT LIGHTING HARNESS Ignition OFF. Check any of the diode circuits between the ambient lighting module, harness side as follows: CIRCUIT REFERENCE CHART Connector-Pin/Circuit Connector-Pin/Circuit C3351-5 CLN45 (GN) C3351-4 RLN44 (BN) C3351-6 CLN46 (BU) C3351-4 RLN44 (BN) C3351-7 CLN44 (OG) C3351-4 RLN44 (BN) Does the meter indicate the circuit is good? Yes: Go to J8 . No: REPAIR or INSTALL a new ambient lighting harness. TEST the system for normal operation.
- J8 CHECK FOR CORRECT AMBIENT LIGHTING MODULE OPERATION Disconnect the ambient lighting module connector. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect the ambient lighting module connector and make sure it seats correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: INSTALL a new ambient lighting module. Refer to «AMBIENT LIGHTING MODULE»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/interiorillumination-lights/#interior-lighting-system) in this service information. TEST the system for normal operation. If the concern is still present, INSTALL the original ambient lighting module. INSTALL a new ambient lighting harness. TEST the system for normal operation. No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
Pinpoint Test K: The Ambient Lighting Does Not Display All Colors

While pressing and releasing the ambient lighting switch, measure the voltage between the ambient lighting module C3351-2, circuit CLN54 (BN/YE), harness side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts with the switch pressed and 0 volts with the switch released? Yes: Go to K2 . No: If voltage is always present, Go to K3 . If no voltage is present, Go to K4 .
- K2 CHECK THE AMBIENT LIGHTING HARNESS Ignition OFF. Check the diode circuits between the ambient lighting module, harness side as follows: CIRCUIT REFERENCE CHART Connector-Pin/Circuit Connector-Pin/Circuit C3351-5 CLN45 (GN) C3351-4 RLN44 (BN) C3351-6 CLN46 (BU) C3351-4 RLN44 (BN) C3351-7 CLN44 (OG) C3351-4 RLN44 (BN) Does the meter indicate good for each circuit check? Yes: Go to K6 . No: REPAIR or INSTALL a new ambient lighting harness. TEST the system for normal operation.
- K3 CHECK THE AMBIENT LIGHTING SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Ambient Lighting Switch C3350. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between the ambient lighting module C3351-2, circuit CLN54 (BN/YE), harness side and ground. Is any voltage present? Yes: REPAIR circuit CLN54 (BN/YE) for a short to voltage. TEST the system for normal operation. No: INSTALL a new ambient lighting switch. Refer to «AMBIENT LIGHTING SWITCH»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/interiorillumination-lights/#interior-lighting-system) in this service information. TEST the system for normal operation.
- K4 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE AMBIENT LIGHTING SWITCH Ignition OFF. Connect: Ambient Lighting Module C3351. Disconnect: Ambient Lighting Switch C3350. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between the ambient lighting switch C3350-2, circuit CBX07 (GN/RD), harness side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: Go to K5 . No: REPAIR circuit CBX07 (GN/RD) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
- K5 BYPASS THE AMBIENT LIGHTING SWITCH Connect and remove a fused jumper wire between the ambient lighting switch C3350-2, circuit CBX07 (GN/RD), harness side and the ambient lighting switch C3350-6, circuit CLN54 (BN/YE), harness side. Do the ambient LEDs illuminate and cycle through a color change each time the jumper wire is connected and removed? Yes: INSTALL a new ambient lighting switch. Refer to «AMBIENT LIGHTING SWITCH»(/mercury/mariner/ii-2011-2011/remont/interiorillumination-lights/#interior-lighting-system) in this service information. TEST the system for normal operation.
