TELE AID operation - GF82.95-P-0001TM
MODEL 211.0/2 with CODE (359) TELE AID emergency call system with CODE (494) USA version
The emergency call system control unit (N123/4) is used to implement current and future vehicle-related services.
Currently supported vehicle-specific services in the US includes
- Telematic Alarm Identification on Demand (emergency call system) (TELE AID) (incl. police emergency call number "911") manual/automatic
- Mercedes-Benz (MB) information call
- Telediagnosis/roadside assistance
- Tracking (dynamic assignment)
- Remote Door Unlock (in case of emergency)
- Authorization The emergency call system control unit is not used for regular telephone calls.
All telematics services are integrated in the emergency call system control unit and run fully automatic. The information is shown on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) and in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1). Since position finding is required for the services, the navigation unit that is integrated in the emergency call system control unit is also used. The navigation unit is a global positioning system (GPS) receiver in the emergency call system control unit, which allows precise position finding. The vehicle's position and direction of movement are determined automatically and kept available in a history. The navigation part receives its GPS data from the GPS antenna (A2/23) (model 211.2 up to model year 09) or from the GPS antenna (A2/49a2) (model 211.0 and 211.2 as of model year 09).
The communication unit is a cellular phone that was adjusted to the American cellular mobile telephone network and is only used to process the telematics functions. The communication part sends and receives its data over the telephone antenna (A2/22) (model 211.2 up to model year 09) or over the telephone antenna (A2/49a1) (model 211.0 and 211.2 as of model year 09).
A prerequisite for using the services, however, is a communication module of the emergency call system control unit that is authorized for the particular service. In other words, the communication module of the emergency call system control unit must have been configured ex factory with the telephone number of the corresponding service provider. In a second step, the user has to become authorized in the service center via this telephone number. The authorization can already be done, in part, at the factory. The telematics services are activated by pressing the corresponding button in the MB-Info and breakdown assistance button group (S93/6) or for a manual emergency call by pressing the SOS switch (S93/3s1) in the overhead control panel control unit (N70).
Following activation the emergency call system control unit sends a message over the Short Message Service (SMS) to the Service Center. While the SMS is transmitted, a telephone connection to the service center is established immediately.
Function requirements
Any telematics service has to be authorized individually. In the event of a fault or missing authorization, an error message is shown in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster and on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit's display. The system is operational as soon as circuit 30 is active.
Self-test
When circuit 15R is active, the emergency call system control unit performs a self-test (for approx. 3.5 s). If the test is successful, the system is operational.
Basic functions
- Performs cyclic self-diagnosis
- Keeps vehicle data available and transmits them securely in case of requirement
- Transmits data messages (with the aid of SMS)
- Placing telephone calls in handsfree mode
Emergency call system
In the event that the driver has an emergency in a remote area, a service technician can obtain an overview of the situation in the vehicle interior with the aid of the emergency call system control unit and initiate the appropriate emergency measures (automatic emergency call). It is also always possible to make a manual emergency call by actuating the SOS switch in the overhead control panel control unit at the same time.
The emergency call system is activated using two different methods
- Automatically, in the event of a crash (through the crash data of the restraint systems control unit (N2/7)
- Manually by actuating the SOS switch in the overhead control panel control unit
In both cases, an emergency message is transmitted immediately to the closest emergency center. Contents of the emergency call message are
- Vehicle position, direction of travel and history
- vehicle data and crash detection (severity of the accident)
- Customer data of the emergency service provider
Terminating the emergency call
Usually, the emergency service center deactivates the emergency call.
During an emergency call, any attempt at making a call is terminated after 5 unsuccessful dialing attempts by the emergency call system control unit

Scheme 349
Location
The emergency call system control unit is located in the trunk on the implement carrier.
Task
The emergency call system control unit is responsible for the following functions
- Integrated telephone module for emergency call, Mercedes-Benz (MB)-Info call and roadside assistance call
- Independent position sensing
- Acquiring and storing vehicle-specific data (e.g. circuit status)
- Actuation of the telephone antenna (A2/49a1) or of the backup antennas, consisting of the left backup antenna, emergency call system (A2/54) and the right backup antenna, emergency call system (A2/55)
- Voice output via left front speaker (H4/9) and right front speaker (H4/10)
- Input of crash data from the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) via a discrete line
- Unlocking the vehicle in an emergency
- Reading in the SOS switch (S93/3s1) and the MB-Info and breakdown assistance button group (S93/6) via 2 separate and discrete lines
- Satellite data via the GPS antenna (A2/49a2)
- Creation and provision of a message via Short Message Service (SMS)
- Muting other audio signals (e.g. radio, navigation)
Design
The emergency call system control unit is designed primarily as follows
- Integrated telephone module
- Integrated navigation module
- Integrated additional battery
- Memory for vehicle-specific data
- Screened metal housing
Function
The emergency call system control unit has its own microprocessor. It also has 2 sub-units, a telephone module and a navigation module. The emergency call system control unit is the central processor for all the important data required for a Telematic Alarm Identification on Demand (emergency call system) (TELE AID) emergency call. The emergency call system control unit calculates the vehicle position with the aid of the installed navigation module and generates an emergency call telegram in the form of an SMS in the event of an emergency call.
The crash data from the restraint systems control unit is received via a serial interface.
The emergency call system control unit can be diagnosed via the central gateway control unit (N93) using STAR DIAGNOSIS. As of model year 08, the emergency call system control unit is also flashable

Location
The left backup antenna, emergency call system and the right backup antenna, emergency call system are located in the vent grilles in the trunk, on the corresponding side.
Task
In the event of a roof antenna (A2/49) failure, these antennas transmit the mobile radio data from and to the emergency call system control unit (N123/4).
