All volume and sound adjustments are performed on the radio control panel and navigation unit (A2/56) and transmitted via the MOST to the audio gateway control unit (N93/1). A distinction must be made between audio and service sources. Audio sources are, for example

Volume setting
The volume of whatever audio source is set can be adjusted using the rotary switch on the radio control panel and navigation unit (A2/56). It can be adjusted separately in all audio and service areas.
With the RESET function, the predefined settings for all sound parameters including volume can be selected and reset to the plant adjustment.
In the "Audio" menu the difference between the volume of the audio signal and the voice output for navigation, with code (813) voice control system (VCS) and traffic announcements can be adjusted. This means that voice output remains audible even in the case of loud audio output.
The volume of the voice output can also be changed during a voice output.
Official emergency broadcasts have priority over all other audio sources. Settings made during navigation voice output apply as the absolute level for the subsequent navigation voice output.
Speed-dependent volume control/dynamic range optimization
Via the speed-dependent volume control (GAL) and automatic vehicle interior noise adaptation Dynamic Range Optimization (DRO) the volume is adapted to the vehicle interior noise backdrop. In the process the vehicle speed signal and signal input to the sound amplifier microphone (B25/6) are used as a relationship indicator.
Mute (volume reduction)
If the user presses the "Mute" key, the audio source currently being listened to is muted, CC drive and Audio CD drive change to pause status.
Tone setting
The radio control panel and navigation unit (A2/56) enables manual sound adjustments for each audio source. Pressing the main button for the sound setting in the left panel area leads to the "Sound" menu, in which the desired settings can be made.
They can be set separately for each function, such as radio, CD, cassette, traffic announcements, code (813) voice control system (VCS), telephone, navigation, TV and MP3-CD. The following sound adjustments are possible
- Language
- Ambiance
- Driver
With a change in sound emphasis (balance, fader) the ratio of the volume of the individual speakers changes. The "Balance" and "Fading" adjustments can be achieved by pressing the main key for sound distribution in the left control panel. Processing of the signals for the required volume adjustments and tone adjustments is performed by the audio component integrated into the audio gateway control unit (N93/1). If the vehicle is equipped with code (810) Sound System, additional spatial sound adjustments and a further final amplification of the audio signals are possible by means of the digital sound processor with its expanded sound processing and amplifier stages.

All volume/sound settings are performed in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) and are transmitted via the MOST (Media Oriented System Transport) to the audio gateway control unit (N93/1).
The signal processing required for the volume and sound settings is performed via the audio component integrated into the audio gateway control unit (N93/1).
The audio amplifier is located in the audio gateway control unit (N93/1). If the vehicle is equipped with code (810) Sound system, a digital sound processor enables additional stereo sound settings and an extended final amplification of the audio signals to be performed

Volume setting
The volume setting for each of the selected audio sources is controlled by the rotary knob on the radio (A2). In addition, the volume can be set separately in all audio and service areas (telephone, traffic information radio channel). The Traffic Program Volume (TPV) softkey assignment allows the volume for the traffic information to be increased or decreased. The RESET function allows predefined settings for the sound parameters including volume to be selected and reset to the factory settings.
Speed-dependent volume control/dynamic range optimization
The volume in the vehicle interior is adapted via speed-dependent volume control (GAL) and automatic vehicle interior noise adaptation, known as Dynamic Range Optimization (DRO).
In the process the vehicle speed signal and signal input to the sound amplifier microphone (B25/6) are used as a relationship indicator.
Mute (volume reduction)
If the user presses the "Mute" function key, the audio source currently being listened to is muted, and the audio CD drives change to pause status. The muting function status can also be triggered automatically.
The following mutings are possible

- TP MUTE
If the vehicle has a factory-installed telephone, the radio (A2) switches to telephone mode in the event of a call, and the audio source is muted.
Tone setting
The radio (A2) has manual tone settings (bass, treble, balance, fader) available for each audio source.
The AUDIO function status can be accessed from every other function state except AUTO-ON.
In display field 2, the bass is displayed as the first tone setting called up.
By pressing the "AUDIO" function key repeatedly, the other tone controls for treble, balance (left/right), fader (front/rear), TPV (increased volume for traffic announcements) can be accessed. The COMAND operating, display and controller unit allows the volume and tone settings (bass, treble, balance, fader and tone options) to be set manually for each audio source with the rotary actuator. The required tone settings can be performed via the "Sound" menu. They can be set separately for each function (e.g. CD, radio reception, traffic announcements). The control signals are read in and evaluated within the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
The desired settings are transferred to the sound system amplifier (N40/3) via the Media Oriented Transport System (MOST) on vehicles with code 810 Sound system, and vehicles with code 810 Sound system also have the Pro Logic 7 tone option.
If the tone emphasis is changed (balance, fader) the volume relationship between the individual speakers changes relative to each other.
In vehicles except code 810 Sound system the selected settings are processed internally, amplified and then emitted at the speaker system
Function sequence for speed-dependent volume control
The speed-dependent volume control can be used to adapt the volume to the noise level in the vehicle interior. In this case, the vehicle speed signal is used as the reference value. This procedure will run automatically. After evaluating the relationship indicator, the audio output is matched to the noise level in the vehicle interior.
The COMAND operating, display and controller unit increases or decreases the output level of the audio signals (GAL) depending on the vehicle speed signal.
The vehicle speed signal travels to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit over the following path

In vehicles with code 810 Sound system, the audio signals are output by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the MOST to the amplifier for the sound system, from where they are sent to the following speakers via direct lines

The volume can be set as follows

For vehicles except code 810 Sound system or with code 523 MB Audio 20 radio, the audio signals are finally amplified in the radio control panel and navigation unit and then sent to the following speakers via direct lines

- Right front door speaker group

Volume adjustment and general, extended tone settings over the control buttons and rotary actuators of the radio
Operating the radio's rotary actuator enables the volume to be raised or lowered for the desired audio function. Pressing the "Tone setting" button on the radio, enables the user to make all the general or extended tone settings. The control signals are read in and evaluated within the radio. The transmission of the settings and the speaker output is performed in the same way as described for the volume adjustment via the right multifunction steering wheel button group.
Function sequence for speed-dependent volume control
The speed-dependent volume control can be used to adapt the volume to the noise level in the vehicle interior. The speed signal from the instrument cluster is used as a reference value for this function. The speed signal is transferred to the radio over the following path
- Instrument cluster
- CAN-B
This procedure will run automatically. After evaluating the relationship indicator, the audio output is matched to the noise level in the vehicle interior.
Depending on the vehicle speed signal, the radio raises or lowers the output level of the audio signals. The transmission of the settings and the speaker output is performed in the same way as described for the volume adjustment via the right multifunction steering wheel button group.
