Thermostat
A new thermostat should be installed only after the following tests and checks have been carried out
- PINPOINT TEST 1: LOSS OF COOLANT 01-01A-454, PINPOINT TEST 2: THE ENGINE OVERHEATS 01-01A-456 or PINPOINT TEST 3: THE ENGINE DOES NOT REACH NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE 01-01A-459
- Thermostat visual inspection
Filling And Bleeding
| CAUTION | Engine coolant provides freeze protection, boil protection, cooling efficiency and corrosion protection to the engine and cooling components. In order to obtain these protections, the engine coolant must be maintained at the correct concentration and fluid level in the degas bottle. When adding engine coolant, use a 50/50 mixture of engine coolant and distilled water. To maintain the integrity of the coolant and the cooling system and maintain the warranty on the cooling system: Vehicle cooling systems are filled with Mazda Premium Engine Coolant or equivalent (yellow color) meeting Mazda specifications. Always fill the cooling system with the same type of coolant that is present in the system. Do not mix coolant types. Do not add/mix orange-colored, extended life coolant such as Mazda Specialty Orange Engine Coolant, meeting Mazda specifications or green colored Mazda coolant. Mixing coolants may degrade the coolant's corrosion protection. Do not add alcohol, methanol, brine or any engine coolants mixed with alcohol or methanol antifreeze. These can cause engine damage from overheating of freezing. Mazda does NOT recommend the use of recycled engine coolant in vehicles originally equipped with Mazda Premium Engine Coolant since a Mazda-approved recycling process is not yet available. Used engine coolant should be disposed of in an appropriate manner. Follow your community's regulations and standards for recycling and disposing of automotive fluids. |
Note. The addition of Cooling System Stop Leak Pellets or equivalent meeting Mazda specification darkens Mazda Premium Engine Coolant from yellow to golden tan.
- Add the correct engine coolant mixture to the degas bottle until the coolant level is between the COOLANT FILL LEVEL marks.
- Select the maximum heater temperature and blower motor speed settings. Position the control to discharge air at vents in the instrument panel.
- Start the engine and allow to idle. While engine is idling, feel for hot air at vents. CAUTION: If air discharge remains cool and engine coolant temperature gauge does not move, engine coolant level is low in engine and must be filled. Stop engine, allow to cool and fill cooling system. Failure to follow these instructions may result in damage to the engine.
- Start the engine and allow to idle until normal operating temperature is reached. Hot air should discharge from vents. The engine coolant temperature gauge should maintain a stabilized reading in the middle of the NORMAL range and the upper radiator hose should feel hot to the touch.
- Shut the engine OFF and allow to cool.
- Check the engine for coolant leaks.
- Check the engine coolant level in degas bottle and fill as necessary.
All Core Plugs
Note. Cylinder block core plug shown in figure, cylinder head core plug similar.

- Use a slide hammer or suitable tools to remove the cylinder block core plug.
- Inspect the cylinder block plug bore for any damage that would interfere with the correct sealing of the plug. If the cylinder block plug bore is damaged, bore for the next oversize plug.

- Coat the cylinder block core plug and bore lightly with Threadlock and install the cylinder block core plug. Use a suitable tool to seat the cup-type core plug. CAUTION: Use care during this procedure so as not to disturb or distort the cup sealing surface. CAUTION: When installed, the flanged edge must be below the chamfered edge of the bore to effectively seal the bore.

- Coat the expansion-type core plug and bore lightly with sealant and install the core plug. Use a suitable tool to seat the expansion-type core plug. CAUTION: Do not contact the crown when installing an expansion-type core plug. This could expand the plug before seating and result in leakage.
Scheme 30
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See «LIFTING»(ref-348626-S31954056142009112700000) .
- Drain the cooling system. See «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING - 3.0L»(ref-348665-S32749980752009112700000) .
- Disconnect the block heater electrical connector. CAUTION: Make sure that the block heater wiring is routed and secured away from rotating or hot components or damage to the wiring may occur.
- Remove the block heater. To install, tighten to 25 N.m {2.5 kgf.m, 18 ft.lbf}.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
