Inspection of Operation
- Turn the ignition switch from OFF to ON.
- Verify that the O/D OFF indicator light is not illuminated. Depress the O/D OFF switch and verify that the O/D OFF indicator light illuminates. If not as specified, inspect the terminal voltage of the O/D OFF switch.
Scheme 288
Scheme 288: Inspection of Voltage
Scheme 289
- Remove the rear console.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Measure the voltage at the O/D OFF switch connector. If not as specified, inspect for continuity at the O/D OFF switch.
- Install the rear console.
Scheme 290
Scheme 290: Inspection of Continuity
Scheme 291
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the rear console.
- Disconnect the O/D OFF switch connector.
- Inspect for continuity at the O/D OFF switch. If not as specified, replace the selector lever knob component. If the switch is okay, inspect the wiring harness. (O/D OFF switch - transmission control module, O/D OFF switch - Body ground.)
- Install the rear console.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Verify that the starter operates only with the ignition switch at the START position and selector lever in the P/N position.
- Verify that the back-up lights illuminate when shifted to the R position with the ignition switch at the ON position. If not as specified, inspect the continuity of the TR switch.

Scheme 292: Inspection of Continuity
Scheme 293
- Inspect the OBD trouble code. (See «DTC TABLE».)
- Remove the TR switch. (See «TRANSMISSION RANGE (TR) SWITCH REMOVAL/INSTALLATION».)
- Inspect for continuity at the TR switch. If not as specified, replace the TR switch.
- Install the TR switch. (See «TRANSMISSION RANGE (TR) SWITCH REMOVAL/INSTALLATION».)

Scheme 295
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Disconnect the TR switch connector.
- Remove the selector rod from the manual shaft lever.
- Remove the manual shaft lever.
- Remove the staking of the lock washer using a screwdriver.
- Remove the nut, lock washer, and packing.
- Remove the TR switch.
- Rotate the manual shaft to the N position.
- Hand-tighten the TR switch bolt.
- Install a new packing.
- Install a new lock washer.
- Tighten the nut. Tightening torque 3.0-4.9 N.m {30-50 kgf.cm, 27-43 in.lbf}
- Bend claws of the lock washer.
- Adjust the TR switch. (See «TRANSMISSION RANGE (TR) SWITCH ADJUSTMENT».)
- Tighten the TR switch mounting bolt. Tightening torque 4.0-6.8 N.m {40-70 kgf.cm, 35-60 in.lbf}
- Rotate the manual shaft to the P position.
- Install the manual shaft lever.
- Install the selector rod to the manual shaft lever.
Scheme 296
Scheme 296: TRANSMISSION RANGE (TR) SWITCH ADJUSTMENT
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the selector rod from the manual shaft lever.
- Rotate the manual shaft to the N position.
- Loosen the TR switch mounting bolt.
- Align the cut groove in the switch with the neutral reference line.
- Tighten the TR switch mounting bolt. Tightening torque 4.0-6.8 N.m {40-70 kgf.cm, 35-60 in.lbf}
- Install the selector rod to the manual shaft lever.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Inspect the operation of the TR switch. (See «TRANSMISSION RANGE (TR) SWITCH INSPECTION».)
Scheme 297
Scheme 297: INPUT/TURBINE SPEED SENSOR INSPECTION
- Remove the bracket and front pipe. (See «EXHAUST SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/mazda/mx-5/nb-2001-2005/remont/exhaust/#exhaust-system) .)
- Disconnect the input/turbine speed sensor connector. NOTE: Resistance value of the input/turbine speed sensor varies with temperature. Normal resistance value occurs when the temperature is 20°C {68°F}, but it may be abnormal at high temperatures. Therefore, do not determine the resistance value only at 20°C {68°F}.
- Measure the resistance between the terminals of the input/turbine speed sensor. If not correct, replace the input/turbine speed sensor. Resistance 560-680 ohms (20°C {68°F})
- Connect the input/turbine speed sensor connector.
- Install the front pipe and bracket. (See «EXHAUST SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/mazda/mx-5/nb-2001-2005/remont/exhaust/#exhaust-system) .)
- Connect the negative battery cable.
