REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Note. After replacing components, check system to ensure proper operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .

Removal

1. Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See «AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS»(ref-160474-S05255991302004021000000). Set front wheels in straight-ahead position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute.
2. Remove driver-side air bag module. See «DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE»(ref-160474-S09599032302004021000000). Remove steering wheel nut. Using a puller, remove steering wheel. Remove steering column covers. Remove clockspring screws and remove clockspring from combination switch. (Scheme 5)

Installation

To install, reverse removal procedure. Before installing steering wheel, center clockspring. See CENTERING CLOCKSPRING under ADJUSTMENTS. Tighten steering wheel nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Reconnect negative battery cable. Perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .

Scheme 5

1. Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See «AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS»(ref-160474-S05255991302004021000000). Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute.
2. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front splash shield. Disconnect crash zone sensor harness connector. (Scheme 6) Remove 3 mounting bolts and remove sensor from vehicle.
3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten crash zone sensor mounting bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-160474-S26029911312004021000000). Reconnect negative battery cable. Perform «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-160474-S33513135362004021000000).

Scheme 6

Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute. On models with sport type steering wheel, remove driver-side air bag module retaining bolt caps. On all models, remove driver-side air bag module retaining bolts. (Scheme 7) Disconnect driver-side air bag connector. Remove driver-side air bag module.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten air bag module retaining bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Reconnect negative battery cable. Perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .

Scheme 7

1. Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See «AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS»(ref-160474-S05255991302004021000000). Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute. Remove center console. Remove 2 center finishing panel screws. Using a flat-blade screwdriver covered with tape, remove center finishing panel.
2. Disconnect necessary connectors. Disconnect PAD switch hooks from center finishing panel. (Scheme 8) Remove PAD switch from center finishing panel.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Reconnect negative battery cable. Perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .

Scheme 8

Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute. Remove glove box. Remove passenger-side air bag module retaining bolts and nuts. (Scheme 9) Remove passenger-side air bag module.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten air bag module retaining bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Reconnect negative battery cable. Perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .

Scheme 9

1. Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See «AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS»(ref-160474-S05255991302004021000000). Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute.
2. SAS control module is located under center of instrument panel. Remove driver-side and passenger side air bags. See «DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE»(ref-160474-S09599032302004021000000) and «PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE»(ref-160474-S20106942582004021000000). Remove right and left "A" pillar trim panels. Remove ashtray and power window switch from center console. Remove shift lever knob (manual transmission). Remove screws securing center console and remove console.
3. Remove instrument panel lower panels. Remove instrument cluster. Remove center finishing panel. Using SST (49 UN01 050), remove heater control unit. Remove bolts securing hood release lever to instrument panel and secure aside. Remove bolts securing steering column to instrument panel and lower steering column to floor.
4. Disconnect all electrical connectors. Remove instrument panel bolt cover plates. Remove bolts securing instrument panel. (Scheme 10) Remove instrument panel from vehicle. Disconnect SAS control module connector. Remove bracket nuts. (Scheme 11) Remove SAS control module from bracket. NOTE: When installing SAS bracket nuts, tighten lower nuts first, then upper nuts.

1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure that SAS control module is installed with arrow pointing toward front of vehicle. Tighten fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-160474-S26029911312004021000000) .
2. After SAS control module is installed, reconnect negative battery cable. Perform «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-160474-S33513135362004021000000) . If a new SAS control module is being installed, go to next step.
3. Verify that AIR BAG warning light flashes continuously approximately 6 seconds after ignition is turned to ON position. Turn ignition to LOCK position, then back to ON position while the AIR BAG warning light is flashing continuously. Go to next step.
4. If procedure is performed correctly, AIR BAG warning light should come on and then turn off after approximately 6 seconds. If AIR BAG warning light does not turn off, go to step 3 .

1. Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See «AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS»(ref-160474-S05255991302004021000000). Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute.
2. Remove appropriate door scuff plate and quarter trim panel. Remove seat belt shoulder anchor cap and bolt. (Scheme 12) Disconnect seat belt pretensioner harness connector. Remove seat belt lower anchor bolt. Remove pretensioner mounting bolts and remove pretensioner.
3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten seat belt anchor bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-160474-S26029911312004021000000). Reconnect negative battery cable. Perform «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-160474-S33513135362004021000000).

Scheme 12
