Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), also known as air bag system, is designed to provide increased accident protection for driver and passenger by deploying air bags in a front-end collision. The air bag system is designed to be used in conjunction with 3-point safety belts. The air bag system consists of AIR BAG warning light, driver-side air bag module, passenger-side air bag module, clockspring, right and left front seat belt pretensioners, SAS control module (air bag sensor unit), crash zone sensor, Passenger Air Bag Deactivation (PAD) switch and wiring harness. Air bags are designed to deploy in a collision, when ignition is on, the crash sensor (integral to SAS control module) senses adequate deceleration, and the SAS control module logic circuits determine that the impact is sufficient to warrant deployment.
A Passenger Air Bag Deactivation (PAD) switch is located in center of console. Passenger-side air bag will not activate in the event of a crash with the PAD switch turned off. PAD switch should be turned off if a child is placed in a rearward facing child safety seat in the passenger seat.
The SAS control module monitors air bag system for failures. If a failure occurs, the SAS control module turns AIR BAG warning light on. If AIR BAG warning light is burned out, SAS control module will sound a buzzer to alert driver of a system malfunction.
SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK
Turn ignition on. AIR BAG warning light in instrument cluster should illuminate for 6 seconds and then turn off. If AIR BAG warning light does not function as described, a failure has occurred in air bag system. Repair malfunctioning air bag system. See DIAGNOSTICS .
