AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Observe the following precautions when servicing the air bag systems

  1. Disable air bag system before servicing any air bag system or steering column component. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-160474-S10240552672004021000000) .
  2. Because of critical system operating requirements, DO NOT service any air bag system component or wiring harness. Corrections are made by replacement only.
  3. DO NOT use an ohmmeter to check resistance of air bag module, as it may cause air bag deployment.
  4. When carrying a live (undeployed) air bag module, ensure trim cover is pointed away from your body. This minimizes chance of injury in event of accidental air bag deployment.
  5. When placing a live air bag module on any surface, always face trim cover upward to reduce motion of module if it is accidentally deployed.
  6. Air bag system clockspring must be aligned in neutral position, since its rotation ability is limited. DO NOT turn steering wheel or column after removal of steering gear.
  7. A double-lock mechanism is used on clockspring connectors. DO NOT use excessive force when disconnecting connectors, as damage to connector may occur.
  8. DO NOT disconnect SAS control module connector or remove SAS control module with ignition switch on. This could result in accidental deployment of air bags, causing serious injury. Disable air bag system before disconnecting or removing SAS control module. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-160474-S10240552672004021000000) .

CENTERING CLOCKSPRING

Set front wheels in straight-ahead position. Turn clockspring clockwise until it stops (DO NOT force, clockspring will break if over wound). Turn clockspring 2 3/4 turns counterclockwise and align marks on clockspring. (Scheme 14)

Scheme 14

Scheme 14: CENTERING CLOCKSPRING
WARNINGAccidental air bag deployment possible. Personal injury may result. After disabling air bag system, wait at least one minute before servicing. Air bag system voltage is maintained for one minute after the system is disabled. Failure to wait at least one minute may cause air bags and pretensioners to deploy without warning.

DISABLING SYSTEM

Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait for more than one minute for back-up power supply to be depleted. Remove steering column covers. Disconnect clockspring connector. (Scheme 15) Remove glove box. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module connector. (Scheme 16) Disconnect left and right seat belt pretensioners. See SEAT BELT PRETENSIONERS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

ACTIVATING SYSTEM

Connect passenger-side air bag module connector. Install glove box. Connect clockspring connector. Install lower panel. Reconnect left and right seat belt pretensioner connectors. Connect negative battery cable. Perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .

DEPLOYED AIR BAG

Seal deployed air bag module in a plastic bag and dispose of as you would any other part. Wear gloves and safety glasses when handling air bag module.

ON-VEHICLE DEPLOYMENT (SCRAPPED VEHICLE)

Note. When scrapping vehicles with undeployed air bags, air bags must be deployed inside vehicle.

Driver-side AIR Bag

  1. Before deploying air bag, inspect operating condition of Deployment Tool (49 H066 002). See «INSPECTING DEPLOYMENT TOOL»(ref-160474-S37301967542004021000000) under DISPOSAL PROCEDURES. RETRIEVING & CLEARING PRESENT MALFUNCTION DTCS

If present malfunction code(s) are stored, AIR BAG warning light will flash or remain on when ignition is turned on. Codes are automatically cleared when fault is corrected.

RETRIEVING PAST MALFUNCTION DTCS

Turn ignition on. Using jumper wire, connect Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal SCN (Light Green/Black wire) to ground. see scheme 16 If past malfunction code(s) are stored, AIR BAG warning light will flash, indicating past malfunction DTCs.

CLEARING PAST MALFUNCTION DTCS

Turn ignition on. Using a jumper wire, short Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal SCN (Gray/Black wire) to ground for 0.5-1.5 seconds, 3 times. see scheme 16 Then ground DLC terminal SCN and ensure past malfunction DTCs are not displayed. Repeat if past malfunction DTCs are displayed. If DTCs are not displayed, disconnect jumper wire and turn ignition off.

AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT FLASHES

AIR BAG warning light indicates fault codes by flashing. Count the number of flashes between pauses to determine code. See AIR BAG DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC) table. After identifying code, go to appropriate DTC test.

WIRE REPAIR

DO NOT repair air bag system wiring. If a problem is found with air bag system wiring, replace faulty wiring.
