Removal (626)
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the steering column covers. Remove the side panel. Remove the lower panel. (Scheme 1) Disconnect the immobilizer unit connector to remove the lower panel. Remove the front console. (Scheme 2)
- Remove the heater unit. See «HEATER UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-182954-S10651984962005081100000). Remove the Sophisticated Air Bag Sensor (SAS) bracket. See «MAZDA - AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS»(ref-150734) article in RESTRAINTS. Remove components in the order indicated in (Scheme 4).
- Slide lock cover and disconnect the set button. (Scheme 3) Pull out the shift cable from the gearshift lever. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual selector lever on the transaxle, by pulling out the shift cable from the manual selector lever cable bracket. Remove manual selector lever cable. (Scheme 4)

Installation (626)
| CAUTION | Bending the shift cable will damage the cable and cause it to become loose during shifting. (Scheme 5) When handling and installing the shift cable, hold it straight. |
- To install, reverse order of removal. (Scheme 4) Install the SAS control module bracket. See «MAZDA - AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS»(ref-150734) article in RESTRAINTS.
- Install the heater unit. See «HEATER UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-182954-S10651984962005081100000). Install the front console. (Scheme 2) Install the lower panel. (Scheme 1)
- Install the side panel. Install the steering column covers. Install the shift cable to the gearshift lever. (Scheme 3) On 2.5L (KL) models, shift the gearshift lever and manual selector lever to Park position. On 2.0L (FS) models, shift the gearshift lever and manual selector lever to Drive position.
- Install the shift cable to the cable bracket. Install the clip to the shift cable. Connect the shift cable to the manual selector lever on the transaxle. Connect the negative battery cable.
