TRANSFER CASE APPLICATIONS

Note. If transmission will be removed for a period of time, support engine with safety stand.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Place gearshift lever in "N" position. Raise and support vehicle. Drain transmission fluid into proper container. Remove skid plate, if equipped. Mark drive shaft(s) for reassembly reference, remove driveshaft bolts and remove drive shaft(s). Remove starter. Mark torque converter to flexplate position for proper alignment during reinstallation. Remove torque converter nuts.
  2. Disconnect shift cable from transmission and bracket. Disconnect electrical connectors and harnesses. Remove catalytic converter. On 4WD models, remove vent tube assembly. Remove transmission cooler lines. Remove rear transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts. Position jack under transmission. Raise and support transmission. Remove transfer case (if equipped). Do not allow transmission to hang freely.
  3. Remove 8 crossmember-to-frame bolts. Remove rear transmission mount from rear extension housing. Remove bellhousing bolt retaining dipstick/filler tube and remove tube. Slightly lower jack and remove remaining bellhousing bolts. Install Torque Converter Holder (T97T-7902-A). Secure transmission with safety chains to transmission jack. Remove transmission from vehicle. To install, reverse removal procedures. Tighten fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-8550-S28730763102000091100000) .
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain transmission fluid into proper container. Remove exhaust system. Mark drive shaft for reassembly reference, remove driveshaft bolts and remove drive shaft. Disconnect throttle cable from transmission.
  2. Remove dipstick/filler tube. Remove small crossmember from under bellhousing. Remove exhaust bracket from left side of bellhousing. Disconnect and remove shifter rod. Disconnect transmission range switch and output speed sensor connectors. Also, disconnect input/turbine speed sensor and transmission solenoid connectors.
  3. Disconnect oil cooler lines from transmission. Remove wire harness bracket from top of transmission case. Remove bellhousing inspection plate from bottom of bellhousing. Remove torque converter bolts and starter. Separate wiring harness from Power Plant Frame (PPF). Remove PPF connecting transmission to differential. Support transmission using transmission jack.
  4. Remove front and rear bolts from PPF, and pry out rear bolt spacer. Remove differential mounting spacer bolts, but DO NOT remove spacers from top rear of PPF. Screw bolt into rear sleeve (forward bolt hole). (Scheme 29) Twist and pull bolt downward to position sleeve in block. Remove long bolt and remove PPF. Remove transmission mount bolts, and lower transmission. DO NOT shake transmission during removal, or damage to crank angle sensor may result.
  1. Install transmission, transmission mount and starter. Install torque converter bolts. Install Power Plant Frame (PPF) rear differential mounting spacer. Support transmission until level. Position PPF and hand-tighten transmission side bolts. Ensure sleeve is installed in block. (Scheme 29) Install spacer and hand tighten bolts. Ensure reamer bolt goes in forward hole.
  2. Tighten front, then rear PPF bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-8550-S28730763102000091100000). Remove jack. Ensure clearance between bottom of PPF and lowest point of body frame is 2.0-2.5" (51-63 mm). (Scheme 30)
  3. To complete transmission installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-8550-S28730763102000091100000). Fill transmission with required amount of fluid, and check for external leaks.
