Transmission
Park vehicle on level ground. Apply parking brake. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Briefly place selector lever in all gears, and then return to "P" position. Clean dipstick and insert in tube. Remove dipstick. On B-Series and 626, fluid level should be within crosshatched area on dipstick. On all others, fluid level should be between top and bottom notches on dipstick near bottom. Check fluid for discoloration and unusual smell. If necessary, add fluid. DO NOT overfill.
Transfer Case (B-Series 4WD)
Remove oil fill plug. If fluid is level with opening, install fill plug. If fluid is low, fill until fluid is level with fill plug opening. Install plug.
Transmission (B-Series)
Use Mazda ATF Type 5 or equivalent.
Transmission (Except B-Series)
Use Mercon III or M-III ATF.
Transfer Case (BW 1354)
Use Mercon III or M-III ATF.
B-Series
Raise and support vehicle. Loosen all oil pan bolts, except for 2 front bolts. Pry rear of oil pan in downward direction and allow fluid to drain into proper container. Remove remaining bolts from oil pan. Remove oil pan and discard old gasket. Remove bolt and oil filter screen. Clean and inspect oil pan and magnet. Lubricate o-rings with transmission fluid, and install onto oil filter screen. Clean oil pan and position magnet onto oil pan. Install oil pan using NEW gasket. Tighten oil pan bolts to specification, using crisscross pattern. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Add 4 qts. (3.8L) of Mazda ATF Type 5 transmission fluid. DO NOT overfill. Start engine, and shift transmission through all gears, ending in "P" position. With engine idling, check fluid level.
Except B-Series
Remove transmission dipstick. Remove drain plug from oil pan or transaxle case and allow fluid to drain into proper container. If oil pan is removed, discard old oil pan gasket. Clean oil pan and install using NEW gasket. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install NEW washer to drain plug. Add transmission fluid through dipstick tube. DO NOT overfill. Start engine, and shift transmission through all gears, ending in "P" position. With engine idling, check fluid level.
| CAUTION | Do not adjust shifter cable in any position other than "D". |
- Place gearshift lever in "D" position. Hang a 3-lb. (1.3 kg) weight on gearshift lever. Move gearshift lever to "1" position, then back 2 detents to "D" position. Hang an 8-lb. (3.63 kg) weight on gearshift lever. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect shifter cable from manual control lever. Pull out lock tab on shifter cable. Remove shifter cable from manual control lever. Place manual control lever in "D" position.
- Rotate manual control lever fully counterclockwise, then rotate manual control lever clockwise to 2 detents to "D" position. Connect shifter cable to manual control lever. Push up on lock tab to lock cable in adjusted position. Remove weight from gearshift lever. Move gearshift lever through all positions, ensuring transmission is at full detent in each position.
MX-5 Miata
- Remove rear console, gearshift lever knob, sleeve, and indicator panel. Loosen lock nut on gearshift lever. (Scheme 12) Place gearshift lever in "P" position by pushing adjustment lever forward.
- Adjust lever so clearance between guide plate and guide pin are within tolerances, with push rod slightly depressed. (Scheme 13) Move gearshift lever from "N" to "D" position. Verify same clearance is between guide plate and guide pin. Install indicator panel, sleeve, gearshift lever knob and rear console.

Scheme 13
Millenia
Remove air cleaner assembly. Place gearshift lever in "P" position. Loosen gearshift lever cable mounting nut at transaxle. Push cable toward cable bellows and hold in position. Center nut on cable in a no-load position. (Scheme 14) Tighten cable mounting nut to 12-16 ft. lbs. (16-22 N.m). Install air cleaner assembly. Move gearshift lever through all positions ensuring no components interfere with gearshift lever.
Scheme 14
MPV
Move gearshift lever to "P" position. Remove steering column covers. Loosen nut on gearshift lever. Pull gearshift lever rearward to "R" position, to side gate of "P" position. Tighten nut on gearshift lever to 12-16 ft. lbs. (16-22 N.m). Verify gearshift lever nut is exposed from nut at appropriate distance. (Scheme 15) Install steering column covers.
Scheme 15
Protege & 626
Remove center console. Place gearshift lever in "P" position. Unlock gearshift lever cable by sliding lock cover in direction as shown. (Scheme 16) Disconnect set button. Ensure gearshift lever is in "P" position on 626 2.5L, or "D" position on 626 2.3L. Connect set button. Lock gearshift lever cable by sliding lock cover in direction shown. Install center console. Move gearshift lever through all positions ensuring no components interfere with gearshift lever.

INTERMEDIATE & OVERDRIVE BAND
| CAUTION | Do not allow overdrive/front band adjustment screw to back out. Band strut could fall out of position. |
Raise and support vehicle. Remove shifter cable and transmission range sensor. Remove and discard band lock nut. Using torque wrench, tighten band adjustment screw to 10 ft. lbs. (14 N.m). Back off band adjustment screw exactly 2 turns, and hold it so that it does not turn. Apply petroleum jelly to lock nut seal, and install NEW band lock nut. While holding band adjustment screw stationary, tighten band lock nut to 35-45 ft. lbs. (48-61 N.m). (Scheme 17) Install shifter cable and transmission range sensor. Lower vehicle.
Scheme 17
Loosen adjusting nuts "A" and "B". With throttle lever closed, adjust nut "B" in direction of arrow. (Scheme 18) Ensure cable does not come off bracket. Tighten both nut "A" and "B" by hand. With throttle lever in closed position, tighten nut "A" to 9-12 ft. lbs. (12-16 N.m). Ensure throttle cable moves smoothly. Ensure that there is no deflection or slack in throttle cable. Ensure throttle cable adjustment is.03-.05" (.8-1.5 mm) at dimension "C" with throttle and throttle cable in closed position. (Scheme 18)
Scheme 18
