SHIFT LOCK SYSTEM
With ignition on, brake pedal depressed, and park position switch on, an input signal is sent from brakelight switch to shift lock actuator. The shift lock actuator will then operate the lock lever (release position), so selector lever can be moved from "P" position.
FUNCTIONAL CHECK
- With ignition key removed, ensure selector lever cannot be moved from "P" position. Insert key in ignition switch.
- Turn ignition on. Ensure selector lever can only be moved with brake pedal depressed. Move selector lever to "R" position.
- Ensure ignition key cannot be removed. Move selector lever to "P" position. Ensure ignition key is removable.
- If shift lock system does not operate as described, check selector lever, shift lock solenoid and control cable.
- Place selector lever in "P" position. On Miata and Millenia, push down emergency override button on shifter console using a screwdriver, and verify selector lever can be moved from "P" position. (Scheme 173)and (Scheme 174). On MPV, push down emergency override button on top of steering column cover. On all models, if selector lever cannot be moved from "P" position, replace shift lock actuator.

Miata
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove rear console. Remove indicator screws and lift up panel. Disconnect park position switch. Check for continuity between connector terminals. (Scheme 175) Continuity should exist with switch released. Continuity should not exist with switch depressed. Replace as needed.

Millenia
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove rear console and center panel. Remove indicator screws and lift up panel. Disconnect park position switch. Check for continuity between terminals "K" and "H". (Scheme 176) Continuity should exist with switch released. Continuity should not exist with switch depressed. Replace as needed.

MPV
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering column cover. Disconnect park position switch/shift lock solenoid connector. Check for continuity between terminals "A" and "B". (Scheme 177) Continuity should exist with selector lever in any position except "P". Replace as needed.

- Remove rear console. Remove selector lever knob and indicator panel screws. Lift up selector lever, selector sleeve and indicator. Disconnect OD OFF switch connector. Ensure selector lever is in "P" position.
- Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at selected connector terminals. (Scheme 175) If voltage is not as specified, inspect harness and connector. Repair as needed. If harness and connector are okay, replace shift lock actuator.
- Turn ignition off. Check for continuity at selected connector terminals. If continuity is not as specified, inspect harness and connector. Repair as needed. If harness and connector are okay, replace shift lock actuator.
- Remove rear console and center panel. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at selected connector terminals. (Scheme 176) If voltage is not as specified, inspect harness and connector. Repair as needed. If harness and connector are okay, replace shift lock actuator.
- Turn ignition off. Check for continuity at selected connector terminals. If continuity is not as specified, inspect harness and connector. Repair as needed. If harness and connector are okay, replace shift lock actuator.
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering column cover. Disconnect park position switch/shift lock solenoid connector. Check for continuity between terminals "G" and "H". (Scheme 177) Check for continuity at selected connector terminals. If continuity is not as specified, inspect harness and connector. Repair as needed. If harness and connector are okay, replace shift lock actuator.
