Voltage Inspection

Note. The variable swirl shutter valve switch cannot be removed as a single unit. When replacing the variable swirl shutter valve switch, replace it together with the intake manifold as a single unit.

  1. Switch the ignition to ON (Engine off).
  2. Verify that the PCM terminal 2AE voltage is as shown in the following table when the variable swirl shutter valve actuator rod is depressed and released by hand. (Scheme 96): PCM Connector Terminal Identification If not as specified, replace the intake manifold. Resistance Inspection

WARNINGWhen the engine is hot, it can badly burn. Turn off the engine and wait until it is cool before removing the ECT sensor.

  7. Disconnect the ECT sensor No.1 connector.
  8. Remove the ECT sensor No.1. (See «ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520401-S32205732832013010300000).)
  9. Place the ECT sensor No.1 in water with a thermometer, and heat the water gradually.
  10. Measure the resistance between ECT sensor No.1 terminals A and B. (Scheme 97): Identifying ECT Sensor No.1 Terminals If not as specified, replace the ECT sensor No.1.   6. Place the ECT sensor No.2 in water with a thermometer, and heat the water gradually.
  7. Measure the resistance between ECT sensor No.2 terminals A and B. (Scheme 98): Identifying ECT Sensor No.2 Terminals If not as specified, replace the ECT sensor No.2. Visual Inspection

  1. Remove the battery cover. (See «BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520412-S07601908282013010300000) .)
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. (See «BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520412-S07601908282013010300000) .)
  3. Disconnect the MAF/IAT sensor connector.
  4. Remove the MAF/IAT sensor. (See «INTAKE-AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520406-S34114749492013010300000) .)
  5. Visually inspect the MAF/IAT sensor for the following: Damage, cracks, soiling Rusted sensor terminal Bent sensor terminal If there is any malfunction, repair or replace the MAF/IAT sensor. (See «INTAKE-AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520406-S34114749492013010300000) .)

Scheme 99: Voltage Inspection
  1. Remove the battery cover. (See «BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520412-S07601908282013010300000).)
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. (See «BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520412-S07601908282013010300000).)
  3. Remove the MAF/IAT sensor without disconnect the MAF/IAT sensor connector. (See «INTAKE-AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520406-S34114749492013010300000).)
  4. Reconnect the negative battery cable. (See «BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520412-S07601908282013010300000).)
  5. Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2. (Scheme 99): Identifying DLC-2 Location
  6. Switch the ignition to ON.
  7. As the air gradually approaches the MAF detection part of the MAF/IAT sensor, verify that the voltage (PID: MAF) varies. (See «ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC TEST [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520400-S25739340032013010300000).) If not as verified, replace the MAF/IAT sensor. (See «INTAKE-AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520406-S34114749492013010300000).)

Note. Because the IAT sensor is integrated in the MAF sensor, replacing the IAT sensor includes replacement of the MAF/IAT sensor.

Scheme 100

Scheme 100: Resistance Inspection
  1. Remove the battery cover. (See «BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520412-S07601908282013010300000).)
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. (See «BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520412-S07601908282013010300000).)
  3. Disconnect the MAF/IAT sensor connector.
  4. Measure the resistance between MAF/IAT sensor terminals D and E. (Scheme 100): Identifying MAF/IAT Sensor Terminals If not as specified, replace the MAF/IAT sensor. Note. Because the boost air temperature sensor is integrated in the MAP sensor, replacing the boost air temperature sensor includes replacement of the MAP sensor/boost air temperature sensor.

Scheme 101

Scheme 101: Resistance Inspection
  1. Remove the battery cover. (See «BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520412-S07601908282013010300000).)
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. (See «BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520412-S07601908282013010300000).)
  3. Remove the dipstick pipe. (See «OIL PAN REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520404-S11422072412013010300000).)
  4. Disconnect the MAP sensor/boost air temperature sensor connector.
  5. Remove the MAP sensor/boost air temperature sensor. (See «MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE (MAP) SENSOR/BOOST AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520401-S16684320762013010300000).)
  6. Measure the resistance between MAP sensor/boost air temperature sensor terminals A and B. (Scheme 101): Identifying MAP Sensor/Boost Air Temperature Sensor Terminals If not as specified, replace the MAP sensor/boost air temperature sensor. Note. Because the BARO sensor is integrated in the PCM, replacing the BARO sensor includes replacement of the PCM.

Scheme 102

Scheme 102: Voltage Inspection
  1. Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2. (Scheme 102): Identifying DLC-2 Location
  2. Switch the ignition to ON.
  3. Verify that the BARO sensor output voltage (PID: BARO) is within the specification. (See «ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC TEST [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520400-S25739340032013010300000).) (See «PCM INSPECTION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520401-S22072326952013010300000).) If not as specified, replace the PCM. CAUTIONThe inspection cannot be performed with this method correctly if there is a malfunction of the APP sensor or throttle valve actuator. Verify that no DTCs related to the APP sensor or throttle valve actuator are stored before the inspection.

Note. The TP sensor cannot be removed as a single unit. When replacing the TP sensor, replace it together with the throttle body as a single unit.

Scheme 103

Scheme 103
  1. Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2. (Scheme 103): Identifying DLC-2 Location
  2. Switch the ignition to ON.
  3. Verify that the TP sensor output voltage (PID: TP1, TP2) is within the specification when the accelerator pedal is not depressed. (See «ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC TEST [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520400-S25739340032013010300000).) (See «PCM INSPECTION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520401-S22072326952013010300000).) If verified, go to the next step. If not as specified, replace the throttle body. (See «INTAKE-AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520406-S34114749492013010300000).)
  4. Start the engine.
  5. Verify that the TP sensor No.1 output voltage (PID: TP1) increases according to the accelerator opening angle when the accelerator opening angle is gradually increased. (See «ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC TEST [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520400-S25739340032013010300000).) If verified, go to the next step. If not as specified, replace the throttle body. (See «INTAKE-AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520406-S34114749492013010300000).)
  6. Verify that the TP sensor No.2 output voltage (PID: TP2) decreases according to the accelerator opening angle when the accelerator opening angle is gradually increased. (See «ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC TEST [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520400-S25739340032013010300000).) If not as specified, replace the throttle body. (See «INTAKE-AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520406-S34114749492013010300000).)

Note. Because the APP sensor is integrated in the accelerator pedal, replacing the APP sensor includes replacement of the accelerator pedal.

Scheme 104

Scheme 104: Voltage Inspection
  1. Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2. (Scheme 104): Identifying DLC-2 Location
  2. Switch the ignition to ON.
  3. Verify that the APP sensor output voltage (PID: APP1, APP2) increases according to the increase in the accelerator opening angle when the accelerator opening angle is gradually increased. (See «ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC TEST [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520400-S25739340032013010300000).) If verified, go to the next step. If not as verified, replace the accelerator pedal. (See «ACCELERATOR PEDAL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520406-S15113497872013010300000).)
  4. Verify that the APP sensor output voltage (PID: APP1, APP2) is within the specification when the accelerator pedal is depressed and not depressed. (See «ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC TEST [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520400-S25739340032013010300000).) (See «PCM INSPECTION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520401-S22072326952013010300000).) If not as specified, replace the accelerator pedal. (See «ACCELERATOR PEDAL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520406-S15113497872013010300000).)

PID Inspection

Note. If the fuel pressure sensor is removed, do not reuse the fuel pressure sensor and the fuel delivery pipe. When you replace the fuel pressure sensor, replace a new fuel delivery pipe with a new fuel pressure sensor.

Scheme 105

Scheme 105: PID Inspection
  1. Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2. (Scheme 105): Identifying DLC-2 Location
  2. Switch the ignition to ON.
  3. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.
  4. Access the FUEL_PRES PID using the M-MDS. (See «ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC TEST [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520400-S25739340032013010300000).)
  5. Verify that the FUEL_PRES PID is at the standard value under the following conditions. Step Condition FUEL_PRES PID 1 Idle 90 s after engine is started. Approx. 3 MPa 2 Idle Spill valve control solenoid valve connector is disconnected. Approx. 530 kPa If not as verified, replace the fuel delivery pipe. (See «FUEL INJECTOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520405-S07309607322013010300000).)
  6. Reconnect the spill valve control solenoid valve connector.
  7. Clear the DTC using the M-MDS. (See «ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC TEST [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520400-S25739340032013010300000).)

A/F Sensor Heater Inspection

WARNINGA hot engine and exhaust system can cause severe burns. Turn off the engine and wait until they are cool before removing the exhaust system.

  3. Disconnect the A/F sensor connector.
  4. Measure the resistance between A/F sensor terminals 2B and 2D. (Scheme 106): Identifying A/F Sensor Terminals If not as specified, replace the A/F sensor. HO2S Heater Inspection

WARNINGA hot engine and exhaust system can cause severe burns. Turn off the engine and wait until they are cool before removing the exhaust system.

  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. (See «BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520412-S07601908282013010300000).)
  3. Disconnect the HO2S connector.
  4. Measure the resistance between HO2S terminals C and D. (Scheme 107): Identifying HO2S Terminals If not as specified, replace the HO2S. (See «HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (HO2S) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520401-S23272208832013010300000).) HO2S heater resistance 2-50 ohms [normal temperature]
CAUTIONWhen foreign material such as an iron chip is on the CKP sensor, it can cause abnormal output from the sensor because of flux turbulence and adversely affect the engine control. Be sure there is no foreign material on the CKP sensor when replacing. Do not assemble the CKP sensor or change the installation position using any method other than the following. Otherwise, it could negatively affect engine controls, such as the ignition timing and fuel injection.
  1. Remove the battery cover. (See «BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520412-S07601908282013010300000) .)
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. (See «BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520412-S07601908282013010300000) .)
  3. Perform the following procedure for easier access. Remove the aerodynamic under cover No.2. (See «AERODYNAMIC UNDER COVER NO.2 REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-520448-S37186396192013010300000) .) Remove the front splash shield (RH). (See «SPLASH SHIELD REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-520448-S04813808932013010300000) .)
  4. Disconnect the CKP sensor connector.
  5. Remove the CKP sensor. (See «CRANKSHAFT POSITION (CKP) SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520401-S14061067472013010300000) .)
  6. Verify that there are no metal shavings on the sensor. If there is a malfunction, remove any metal shavings that are adhering.

Scheme 108

Scheme 108: Air Gap Inspection
  1. Verify that the CKP sensor is securely installed. (See «CRANKSHAFT POSITION (CKP) SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520401-S14061067472013010300000).)
  2. Using a thickness gauge, measure the air gap between the plate projections at the back of crankshaft pulley and the CKP sensor. (Scheme 108): Measuring CKP Sensor Air Gap If not within the specification, inspect the plate projections for cracks or bending. If there is any malfunction, replace the crankshaft pulley. (See «FRONT OIL SEAL REPLACEMENT [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520403-S20168447932013010300000).) Air gap 0.5-1.5 mm {0.02-0.05 in}
CAUTIONWhen foreign material such as an iron chip is on the CKP sensor, it can cause abnormal output from the sensor because of flux turbulence and adversely affect the engine control. Be sure there is no foreign material on the CKP sensor when replacing. Do not assemble the CKP sensor or change the installation position using any method other than the following. Otherwise, it could negatively affect engine controls, such as the ignition timing and fuel injection. If the wiring harnesses or waterproof connectors are damaged, water penetrating the connector will cause a sensor malfunction. To prevent this, be careful not to damage wiring harnesses or waterproof connectors.
  1. Idle the engine.
  2. Measure the CKP signal and verify that rectangular waves are produced. (See «PCM INSPECTION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520401-S22072326952013010300000) .) If not as specified, replace the CKP sensor. (See «CRANKSHAFT POSITION (CKP) SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520401-S14061067472013010300000) .)
CAUTIONWhen replacing the CMP sensor, make sure there is no foreign material on it such as metal shavings. If it is installed with foreign material, the sensor output signal will malfunction resulting from fluctuation in magnetic flux and cause a deterioration in engine control.
  1. Remove the battery cover. (See «BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520412-S07601908282013010300000) .)
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. (See «BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520412-S07601908282013010300000) .)
  3. Remove the charge air cooler cover. (See «INTAKE-AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520406-S34114749492013010300000) .)
  4. Disconnect the CMP sensor connector.
  5. Remove the CMP sensor. (See «CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520401-S13008359912013010300000) .)
  6. Verify that there are no metal shavings on the CMP sensor. Remove any metal shavings that are adhering.
CAUTIONWhen replacing the CMP sensor, make sure there is no foreign material on it such as metal shavings. If it is installed with foreign material, the sensor output signal will malfunction resulting from fluctuation in magnetic flux and cause a deterioration in engine control. If the wiring harnesses or waterproof connectors are damaged, water penetrating the connector will cause a sensor malfunction. To prevent this, be careful not to damage wiring harnesses or waterproof connectors.
  1. Idle the engine.

CAUTIONBe careful not to impact the sensor. Verify that there is no debris between the sensor and the cylinder block before installing.

  3. Disconnect the KS connector.
  4. Measure the resistance between KS terminals A and B. (Scheme 109): Identifying KS Terminals If not as specified, replace the KS. (See «KNOCK SENSOR (KS) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520401-S29258153832013010300000).) Specification Approx. 4.87 megohms [normal temperature]

Note. The fuel tank pressure sensor cannot be removed as a single unit. When replacing the fuel tank pressure sensor, replace it together with the evaporative hose component as a single unit.

  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. (See «BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.3 DISI TURBO]»(ref-520412-S07601908282013010300000) .)
  3. Disconnect the fuel tank pressure sensor connector.

  5. Disconnect the quick release connectors and remove the evaporative hose component.   6. Switch the ignition to ON.
  7. Plug one end of the evaporative hose component and verify that the output voltage from the fuel tank pressure sensor changes when pressure is applied from the other hose end.
