OIL COOLER FLUSHING [FN4A-EL]

WARNINGA hot transaxle and ATF can cause severe burns. Turn off the engine and wait until they are cool before changing the ATF. Using compressed air can cause dirt and other particles to fly out, causing injury to the eyes. Wear protective eyeglasses whenever using compressed air.

Note. If the transaxle is replaced, flush and inspect the oil cooler. When replacing the transaxle, inspect the oil cooler together with flushing it using the following procedures, and with the oil hose removed.

  1. Disconnect the oil cooler hose from the transaxle. (See «OIL COOLER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [FN4A-EL]»(ref-517464-S01561269972012121200000).)
  2. Set a clean oil pan up to the oil cooler hose inlet (Scheme 422): Blowing Compressed Air Into Oil Cooler To Drain Oil
  3. Blow 491-882 kPa {5.01-8.99 kgf/cm 2, 71.3-127.0 psi} of compressed air into the oil cooler hose outlet to drain remaining oil. (Scheme 423): Blowing Compressed Air Into Oil Cooler Hose Outlet To Drain Remaining Oil
  4. Add new ATF from the oil cooler hose outlet and blow 491-882 kPa {5.01-8.99 kgf/cm 2, 71.3-127.0 psi} of compressed air to flush. (Repeat 2 or 3 times)
  5. Verify that none of the following foreign material is mixed in with the drained ATF: Large metal fragments of 0.5 mm {0.02 in} or more that cannot pass through the oil strainer Fibrous clutch facing
  6. Repeat the procedures from Step 4 and flush the inside of the oil cooler. If foreign material such as metal fragments or clutch facing remains even after the oil cooler is flushed repeatedly, replace the oil cooler. On-Vehicle Removal

WARNINGUsing compressed air can cause dirt and other particles to fly out, causing injury to the eyes. Wear protective eyeglasses whenever using compressed air. A hot transaxle and ATF can cause severe burns. Turn off the engine and wait until they are cool.
CAUTIONWater or foreign objects entering the connector can cause a poor connection or corrosion. Be sure not to drop water or foreign objects on the connector when disconnecting it.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Clean the transaxle exterior throughout with a steam cleaner or cleaning solvents.
  3. Drain the ATF into a separate suitable container. (See «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID (ATF) REPLACEMENT [FN4A-EL]»(ref-517464-S25705219422012121200000).)
  4. Remove the oil pan.
  5. Disconnect each solenoid valve connector. (Scheme 424): Identifying Shift Solenoids, TFT Sensor, Pressure Control Solenoid And GND
  6. Remove the TFT sensor and GND.
  7. Remove the oil strainer.
  8. Remove the bolts as shown, then remove the control valve body. (Scheme 425): Identifying Control Valve Body Bolts
  9. Remove the accumulators and accumulator springs. (Scheme 426): Identifying Accumulators And Accumulator Springs

  1. Install the accumulator springs, accumulators and control valve body.   2. Tighten the bolts as shown to install the control valve body. (Scheme 429): Identifying Control Valve Body Bolts Tightening torque 8-10 N.m {82-101 kgf.cm, 71-88 in.lbf} BOLT LENGTH MEASURED FROM BELOW HEAD Mark Length measured from below the head B 40 mm {1.6 in} No mark 70 mm {2.8 in}
  3. Install the oil strainer.
  4. Match the harness colors, then connect each solenoid valves connector. Connector color (harness-side) Solenoid valve Connector color Pressure control solenoid Black Shift solenoid A White Shift solenoid B Blue Shift solenoid C Green Shift solenoid D White Shift solenoid E Black
  5. Install the GND. (Scheme 430): Identifying Shift Solenoids, TFT Sensor, Pressure Control Solenoid And GND Tightening torque 8-10 N.m {82-101 kgf.cm, 71-88 in.lbf}
  6. Install the TFT sensor to the oil strainer. CAUTION: If any sealant remains on the sealing surfaces of the transaxle case and oil pan, transaxle damage may occur. Use a cleaning fluid to remove any old sealant from the transaxle case and oil pan.
  7. Apply a light coat of sealant (TB1217E) to the contact surfaces of the oil pan and transaxle case. (Scheme 431): Contact Surfaces Of Oil Pan
  8. Install the oil pan before the applied sealant starts to harden. Tightening torque 6.0-8.0 N.m {62-81 kgf.cm, 54-70 in.lbf}
  9. Add the ATF. (See «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID (ATF) REPLACEMENT [FN4A-EL]»(ref-517464-S25705219422012121200000).)
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
  11. Perform the "Mechanical System Test". (See «MECHANICAL SYSTEM TEST [FN4A-EL]»(ref-517464-S31078688932012121200000).)
  12. Perform the "Road Test". (See «ROAD TEST [FN4A-EL]»(ref-517464-S10919086102012121200000).)
