Timing Chains: Removal & Installation Lincoln Continental IX

Removal

1. Remove engine. See «ENGINE»(ref-1338-S11706129542000031300000). Remove front cover. See «FRONT COVER»(ref-1338-S15812025772000031300000).
2. Remove camshaft followers. See «CAMSHAFT FOLLOWER & LASH ADJUSTER»(ref-1338-S10661006772000031300000). Remove crankshaft position sensor pulse wheel. Rotate engine to No. 1 Top Dead Center (TDC). (Scheme 11)
3. To prevent accidental rotation of the camshafts and possible engine damage, install Camshaft Positioning Tool (T93P-6256-A) and Camshaft Holding Tool (T93P-6256-AH). Install camshaft positioning tool in rear D-slots of camshafts. (Scheme 12)
4. Failure to use camshaft holding tool while assembling or disassembling timing chains will result in damage to D-slots or camshaft positioning tool. Install camshaft holding tool onto camshafts to keep camshafts from rotating and to prevent deformation of camshaft positioning tool. (Scheme 13) Tighten camshaft holding tool bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-1338-S15062982612000031300000).
5. Remove two bolts retaining right primary timing chain tensioner to cylinder head and remove primary timing chain tensioner. (Scheme 14) Remove bolt retaining right timing chain tensioner arm and remove timing chain tensioner arm.
6. Remove three bolts retaining right timing chain guide and remove timing chain guide. Remove right primary timing chain from camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket. Remove right crankshaft sprocket.
7. If it is necessary to remove primary or secondary camshaft sprockets or secondary timing chain tensioners, install camshaft torquing tool at center area of camshafts. Remove camshaft sprocket retaining bolts.
8. Secondary timing chain tensioner plunger is spring-loaded. Care must be taken to prevent plunger from dropping out of timing chain tensioner during disassembly. Unlock and compress secondary timing chain tensioners and lock the timing chain tensioner in the compressed position using clip. Remove secondary timing chain and camshaft sprockets.
9. Remove left crankshaft sprocket. Remove two bolts retaining left primary timing chain tensioner to cylinder head and remove primary timing chain tensioners. Remove bolt retaining left timing chain tensioner arm and remove left timing chain tensioner arm.
10. Remove three bolts retaining left timing chain guide and remove timing chain guide. Remove left primary timing chain from camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket. If necessary, remove primary or secondary camshaft sprockets or secondary timing chain tensioners with Camshaft Holding Tool at center area of camshafts. Remove camshaft sprocket retaining bolts.
11. Unlock and compress secondary chain tensioner and lock the chain tensioner in the compressed position using clip. Remove secondary timing chain and camshaft sprockets.
12. Inspect friction material on timing chain tensioner arms and timing chain guides. If worn or damaged, remove and clean oil pan and replace oil pump screen cover and tube.

Installation

Note. If engine has "jumped time," make sure that all service to engine components and/or valve train have been made.

1. Make sure primary and secondary timing chain tensioners are in collapsed position and retained with clip. If cylinder head was removed from cylinder block, position crankshaft keyway to 270 degrees (or at nine o'clock position). (Scheme 15) The cam followers must not be installed in the cylinder heads at this time. Install cylinder heads on cylinder block. See «CYLINDER HEAD»(ref-1338-S42515646002000031300000).
2. Install camshaft positioning tool into D-slots on rear of camshafts to position both intake and exhaust camshafts with the keyways pointing down towards crankshaft. (Scheme 16) Do not remove camshaft holding tool from camshafts until all parts are installed and tightened. Install camshaft holding tool on center of camshafts. Tighten camshaft holding tool bolts to specification.
3. If removed, install left secondary timing chain tensioner. Tighten retaining bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-1338-S15062982612000031300000).
4. If removed, install left secondary camshaft sprockets and secondary timing chain as an assembly with hubs of camshaft sprockets facing as shown. (Scheme 17)
5. Install left primary camshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket spacer on left camshaft. Secondary camshaft sprockets must be free to turn. Install washers and camshaft sprocket retaining bolts; finger-tighten only. Install Tensioner Tool (T93P-6256-BH) on left secondary timing chain tensioner. (Scheme 18)
6. Install camshaft positioning tool into D-slots. Install camshaft holding tool at center area of left intake and exhaust camshafts. Tighten camshaft sprocket bolts to specification. Do not remove Camshaft Positioning Tool or Camshaft Holding Tool.
7. Repeat steps 1 through 6 for right cylinder head. Crankshaft sprockets are identical. They may only be installed one way. (Scheme 19)
8. Install left crankshaft sprocket. Make sure tapered part of crankshaft sprocket faces away from cylinder block for left primary timing chain crankshaft sprocket. If copper links of timing chain are not visible, split both chains in half and mark the two opposing links.
9. Install left primary timing chain on left primary camshaft sprocket. Make sure copper link of timing chain lines up with timing mark of camshaft sprocket. Install left primary timing chain on crankshaft sprocket. Make sure copper link of timing chain lines up with timing mark of crankshaft sprocket.
10. Make sure tapered part of crankshaft sprocket faces toward cylinder block for right primary timing chain crankshaft sprocket. Repeat steps 8 and 9 for right primary timing chain.
11. For timing chain guides, two bolts to the cylinder head are longer than the bolt to the cylinder block. Install right and left timing chain guides and secure with three bolts on each. Tighten bolts to specification.
12. Lubricate timing chain tensioner arm contact surfaces with clean engine oil and install right and left timing chain tensioner arms using one bolt each. Tighten to specification.
13. Do not remove lock pins until timing chain guides are installed. Install right and left primary timing chain tensioners and secure with two bolts on each. Tighten bolts to specification.
14. Remove lock pins from primary timing chain tensioners and ensure all timing marks are aligned. Remove camshaft positioning tool. Remove camshaft holding tool. Install camshaft followers. See «CAMSHAFT FOLLOWER & LASH ADJUSTER»(ref-1338-S10661006772000031300000).
15. When cleaning sealing surfaces of the engine front cover and oil pan-to-cylinder block joints, use extreme caution not to damage the rubber bead of the oil pan gasket. If a leak should occur upon reassembly, remove the oil pan and replace the oil pan gasket.
16. Install front cover. See «FRONT COVER»(ref-1338-S15812025772000031300000). Install engine. See «ENGINE»(ref-1338-S11706129542000031300000). Start engine and check for leaks and proper operation.

Scheme 19

1. Remove valve covers. See «VALVE COVERS»(ref-1338-S18168202962000031300000) . Rotate crankshaft until piston in cylinder to be serviced is at bottom of its stroke and camshaft lobe is at base circle.
2. Install Valve Spring Spacer (T91P-6565-AH) between valve spring coils to prevent valve stem oil seal damage. Using Valve Spring Compressor (T93P-6565-A), compress valve spring. Remove camshaft follower and lash adjuster.

1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Coat components with engine oil before installing. Before installing valve cover, apply silicone sealant at front cover-to-cylinder block areas.
2. When installing fuel lines, fit NEW fuel resistant "O" rings (Brown) on fuel lines. Lightly coat "O" rings with clean engine oil before installing. Clean fittings, and replace garter spring (if necessary).
