HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING

HINT

  1. Use the following procedures to troubleshoot the power mirror control system.

  1. CHECK POWER MIRROR SWITCH OPERATION OF INTEGRATION CONTROL AND PANEL Turn the engine switch on (ACC). With the mirror master switch set to L, check that the mirror surface moves UP, DOWN, LEFT and RIGHT normally. With the mirror master switch set to R, check that the mirror surface moves UP, DOWN, LEFT and RIGHT normally.
  2. CHECK MEMORY AND REACTIVATION FUNCTION HINT: The SET, M1, M2 and M3 switches of the seat memory switch are shown in the illustration. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and move the shift lever into the P position. Check the M1 switch. Using the mirror master switch and mirror control switch, fully turn the mirror to the left. Press and hold down switches M1 and SET. Check that the buzzer sounds for 0.5 seconds, signaling that the outer mirror position has been recorded. Change the position of the outer mirror and then press the M1 switch. Check that the buzzer sounds for 0.1 seconds and the outer mirror automatically moves to the recorded fully-turned-left position. Check the M2 switch. Using the mirror master switch and mirror control switch, fully turn the mirror to the right. Press and hold down switches M2 and SET. Check that the buzzer sounds for 0.5 seconds, signaling that the outer mirror position had been recorded. Change the position of the outer mirror and then press the M2 switch. Check that the buzzer sounds for 0.1 seconds and the outer mirror automatically moves to the recorded fully-turned-right position. Check the M3 switch. Using the mirror master switch and mirror control switch, fully turn the mirror upward. Press and hold down switches M3 and SET. Check that the buzzer sounds for 0.5 seconds, signaling that the outer mirror position has been recorded. Change the position of the outer mirror and then press the M3 switch. Check that the buzzer sounds for 0.1 seconds and the outer mirror automatically moves to the recorded fully-upward position. When the outer mirror is in the driving position: Check that the M1, M2 and M3 switches cause the outer mirror to move to the recorded outer mirror positions under these conditions: turn the engine switch OFF, open the driver side door and press the M1, M2 or M3 switch within 20 seconds. Check that the following procedures will erase the recorded outer mirror positions of the M1, M2 and M3 switches: press and hold the power seat slide switch; disconnect the battery's negative (-) terminal cable; and wait for at least 1 minute. Confirm that all recorded outer mirror positions are erased. Then attempt to record the outer mirror position by pressing and holding the SET switch and 2 other switches (among M1, M2 and M3). Check that no outer mirror positions are recorded by individually pressing M1, M2 and M3 and making sure that the outer mirror does not move.
  3. CHECK POWER RETRACTABLE MIRROR Turn the engine switch on (ACC). At each position of the outer mirror body, check the retractable mirror's operation when operating the retract switch of the outer mirror. Move the mirrors to the driving position. Press the retract switch. Check that the right and left mirrors move from the driving position to the retracted position. Move the mirrors to the driving position. Move one of the mirrors to the forward position by hand. Press the retract switch. Check that the forward position mirror moves to the retracted position, and check that the driving position mirror moves to the retracted position. Move the mirrors to the driving position. Move one of the mirrors to the retracted position by hand. Press the retract switch. Check that the driving position mirror moves to the retracted position. Move the mirrors to the retracted position. Press the retract switch. Check that the right and left mirrors move from the retracted position to the driving position. Move the mirrors to the retracted position. Move one of the mirrors to the driving position by hand. Press the retract switch. Check that the retracted position mirror moves to the driving position. Check the operation of the outer mirror body in relation to retract switch operations and engine switch position changes. When the mirror body is operating, turn the engine switch off. Check that the mirror operation does not stop and continues until the operation has finished. Repeat the step above. This time, before the mirror operation completes, turn the engine switch on (ACC) and press the retract switch. Check that the mirror operates in the opposite direction. Check the operation of the outer mirror body when it is restrained by an obstacle. When the mirror body is moving to the retracted or driving position, restrain the mirror body by hand. Check that the mirror stops moving. With the mirror body stopped partway, push the retract switch. Check that the mirror body moves in the opposite direction.
  4. CHECK REVERSE-SHIFT-LINKED OPERATION OF MIRRORS Turn the engine switch on (IG). Set the mirror master switch to L or R. Check that the mirror faces downward when the shift lever is moved to R. Check that the outer rear view mirror returns to the original position when one of the following conditions is met: Shift lever is moved to position other than P. Mirror master switch is in the neutral position (OFF). Engine switch is turned off.
  5. CHECK MIRROR HEATER Turn the engine switch on (IG). Check that pressing the rear defogger switch illuminates the indicator and warms the mirror surface. Check that after approximately 15 minutes, the indicator light turns off and the mirror heater deactivates.
  6. AUTO ELECTRIC RETRACT INSPECTION With the engine switch off, and with the mirror retract switch ON (AUTO ON), when the doors are changed from the locked to the unlocked position through the entry, wireless or key-linked function, check that the outer rear view mirror body moves from the retracted position to the driving position, and stops in the driving position. With the engine switch off, and with the mirror retract switch ON (AUTO ON), when the doors are changed from the unlocked to the locked position through the entry, wireless or key-linked function, check that the outer rear view mirror body moves from the driving position to the retracted position, and stops in the retracted position.
  7. MEMORY CALL FUNCTION AUTOMATIC MEMORY CALL OPERATION INSPECTION With the transmitter's recognition code registered into the memory system, perform an entry unlock or wireless unlock operation. Open the driver door and check that the front seat, front seat belt anchor, steering wheel and outer rear view mirror automatically move to the positions recorded in memory. MEMORY REGISTRATION (WITH WIRELESS FUNCTION) Prepare by recording the driving position through the memory switch (M1, M2 or M3). With the engine switch off and the driver door closed, press and hold both of the following: a memory switch (M1, M2 or M3) and a transmitter switch. Continue holding the switches until the answer back buzzer sounds. HINT: Either the LOCK or UNLOCK switch on the transmitter can be pressed. MEMORY REGISTRATION (WITH WIRELESS FUNCTION, CARD TYPE) Prepare by recording the driving position through the memory switch (M1, M2 or M3). Hold only the transmitter to be registered. With the engine switch off and the driver door closed, press and hold both of the following: a memory switch (M1, M2 or M3) and door lock control switch. Continue holding the switches until the answer back buzzer sounds. NOTE: Do not bring 2 or more keys into the vehicle. HINT: Either the lock or unlock switch on the door control switch can be pressed. The door control switch on the driver side or front passenger side can be used. MEMORY ERASURE (WITH WIRELESS FUNCTION) With the engine switch off and the driver door closed, press and hold both of the following: the memory SET switch and transmitter switch. Continue holding the switches until the answer back buzzer sounds. HINT: Either the LOCK or UNLOCK switch on the transmitter can be pressed. MEMORY ERASURE (WITH WIRELESS FUNCTION, CARD TYPE) Hold only the transmitter of which registration is to be erased. With the engine switch off and the driver door closed, press and hold both of the following: the memory SET switch and door lock control switch. Continue holding the switches until the answer back buzzer sounds. NOTE: Do not bring 2 or more keys into the vehicle. HINT: Either the lock or unlock switch on the door control switch can be pressed. The door control switch on the driver side or front passenger side can be used.

DATA LIST/ACTIVE TEST

  1. READ DATA LIST HINT: Using the Techstream to read the Data List allows the values or states of switches, sensors, actuators and other items to be read without removing any parts. This non-intrusive inspection can be very useful because intermittent conditions or signals may be discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed. Reading the Data List information early in troubleshooting is one way to save diagnostic time. NOTE: In the table below, the values listed under "Normal Condition" are reference values. Do not depend solely on these reference values when deciding whether a part is faulty or not. Warm up the engine. Turn the engine switch off. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical/(desired system)/Data List / According to the display on the Techstream, read the "Data List". This non-intrusive functional inspection can be very useful because intermittent operation may be discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed.   1. COMPASS DISPLAY MODE SELECTION Turn the compass display ON and OFF by pressing and holding the AUTO switch for 3 seconds. Procedures for selecting compass mode. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Check that the inner mirror's LED illuminates green. Check that one of the following directions is displayed: N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW. Press and hold the inner mirror's AUTO switch for 3 seconds, and check that the direction display turns off. HINT: Immediately after the AUTO switch is pressed, check that the LED turns off and the inner mirror anti-glare mode turns off. Then, after the AUTO switch is pressed and held for 3 seconds, check that the LED illuminates and the inner mirror anti-glare mode turns on.
  2. COMPASS ZONE SETTING HINT: The location of magnetic north and true north differs depending on the vehicle's location. Adjustment of the compass's magnetism is required. The user must select a zone as the automatic adjustment will be different depending on the vehicle's location. Change the inner mirror's zone setting using the AUTO switch procedures described below. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Check that the inner mirror's LED illuminates green. Check that one of the following directions is displayed: N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW. Press and hold the inner mirror's AUTO switch for 3 seconds, and check that the direction display turns off. Do not release the AUTO switch and hold it for another 3 seconds (total press time: 6 seconds). Check that ZONE or a number from 1 to 15 is displayed on the compass. Each press of the AUTO switch causes the number display to increase by 1. Use the zone setting map to find the appropriate zone and set the zone number. After setting the zone number, check that waiting several seconds causes the compass to return to the direction display.

  4. COMPASS CALIBRATION HINT: Compass calibration should be performed on each vehicle, as each vehicle has a unique magnetic field. Performing compass calibration will store information about the vehicle's magnetic field. Procedures for calibration. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Check that the inner mirror's LED illuminates green. Check that one of the following directions is displayed: N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW. Press and hold the inner mirror's AUTO switch for 3 seconds, and check that CAL is displayed on the compass. Perform calibration by driving the vehicle at 8 km/h (5 mph) or less in a circle. Drive in a circle 1 to 3 times, and check that calibration is completed by confirming that CAL is not displayed on the compass. HINT: After the calibration is performed once, calibration will not be necessary unless the vehicle's magnetic field changes drastically. If the magnetic field has changed, CAL will be displayed on the compass.

DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation. NOTE: After the engine switch is turned off, the HDD navigation system requires approximately 6 minutes to record various types of memory and settings. As a result, after turning the engine switch off, wait 6 minutes or more before disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.   1. INSPECT INNER REAR VIEW MIRROR ASSEMBLY Check operation of the electrochromic inner mirror. Connect the battery positive (+) lead to terminal 4 and the negative (-) lead to terminal 1. Attach black colored tape to the forward sensor to prevent it from sensing. Shine an electric light on the mirror. Check that the mirror surface changes from bright to dark. HINT: When the environment is very bright, the antiglare operation may occur immediately after the tape is applied. If the result is not as specified, replace the mirror assembly.

ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

  1. CHECK POWER RETRACTABLE MIRROR Turn the engine switch on (ACC). At each position of the outer mirror body, check the retractable mirror's operation when operating the retract switch of the outer mirror. Move the mirrors to the driving position. Press the retract switch. Check that the right and left mirrors move from the driving position to the retracted position. Move the mirrors to the driving position. Move one of the mirrors to the forward position by hand. Press the retract switch. Check that the mirror moves from the forward position to the retracted position. Check that the other mirror moves from the driving position to the retracted position. Move the mirrors to the driving position. Move one of the mirrors to the retracted position by hand. Press the retract switch. Check that the mirror moves from the driving position to the retracted position. Move the mirrors to the retracted position. Press the retract switch. Check that the right and left mirrors move from the retracted position to the driving position. Move the mirrors to the retracted position. Move one of the mirrors to the driving position by hand. Press the retract switch. Check that the mirror moves from the retracted position to the driving position. Check the operation of the outer mirror in relation to retract switch operations and engine switch position changes. When the mirror is operating, turn the engine switch off. Check that the mirror operation does not stop and continues until the operation has finished. Repeat the step above. This time, before the mirror operation completes, turn the engine switch on (ACC) and press the retract switch. Check that the mirror operates in the opposite direction. Check the operation of the outer mirror when it is restrained by an obstacle. When the mirror is moving to the retracted or driving position, restrain the mirror by hand. Check that the mirror stops moving. With the mirror stopped partway, push the retract switch. Check that the mirror moves in the opposite direction it was moving when it was restrained.
  2. CHECK REVERSE-SHIFT LINKED OPERATION OF MIRRORS Turn the engine switch on (IG). Set the mirror switch to L or R. Check that the mirror faces downward when the shift lever is moved to R. When the shift lever is not on P, or the mirror switch is in the neutral position (OFF), check that the outer rear view mirror returns to the driving position.
  3. CHECK MIRROR HEATER Turn the engine switch on (IG). Check that pressing the rear defogger switch illuminates the indicator and warms the mirror surface. Check that after approximately 15 minutes, the indicator light turns off and the mirror heater deactivates.
  1. CHECK POWER MIRROR OPERATION Turn the engine switch on (ACC). When the L mirror select switch is pressed, check that the indicator light on the LH side illuminates. With the mirror select switch set to L, check that the mirror surface moves UP, DOWN, LEFT and RIGHT normally. After checking the mirror surface movement, check that pressing the L mirror select switch causes the indicator light on the LH side to turn off. When the R mirror select switch is pressed, check that the indicator light on the RH side illuminates. After checking the mirror surface movement, check that pressing the R mirror select switch causes the indicator light on the RH side to turn off.
