PRECAUTION

  1. Check that the battery cables are connected to the correct terminals.
  2. Disconnect the battery cables when the battery is given a quick charge.
  3. Do not perform tests with a high voltage insulation resistance tester.
  4. Never disconnect the battery while the engine is running.
  5. Check that the charging cable nut is tightened on terminal B of the generator and the fuse box.
  6. If the generator is connected to the vehicle, do not perform checks on terminal F.

  1. CHECK BATTERY CONDITION NOTE: If the battery is weak or if the engine is difficult to start, perform the following procedures. Check the battery for damage and deformation. If severe damage, deformation or leakage is found, replace the battery. Check the electrolyte quantity of each cell. For maintenance-free batteries: If the electrolyte quantity is below the lower line, replace the battery. If the electrolyte quantity is above the lower line, check the battery voltage when cranking the engine. If the voltage is less than 9.6 V, recharge or replace the battery. HINT: Before checking the battery voltage, turn off all the electrical systems (headlights, blower motor, rear defogger, etc.). For non-maintenance-free batteries: If the electrolyte quantity is below the lower line, add distilled water to each cell. Then, recharge the battery and check the electrolyte's specific gravity. Standard specific gravity: 1.25 to 1.29 at 20°C (68°F) If the electrolyte quantity is above the lower line, check the battery voltage when cranking the engine. If the voltage is less than 9.6 V, recharge or replace the battery. HINT: Before checking the battery voltage, turn off all the electrical systems (headlights, blower motor, rear defogger, etc.).
  2. CHECK BATTERY TERMINAL AND FUSE Check that the battery terminals are not loose or corroded. If the terminals are corroded, clean the terminals. Measure the resistance of the H-fuse and fuses. Standard resistance: Below 1 ohms If the results are not as specified, replace fuses as necessary.
  3. CHECK V-RIBBED BELT Check the belt for wear, cracks or other signs of damage. If any of the following defects is found, replace the fan and generator V belt. The belt is cracked. The belt is worn out to the extent that the cords are exposed. The belt has chunks missing from the ribs. Check that the belt fits properly in the ribbed grooves. HINT: Check with your hand to confirm that the belt has not slipped out of the grooves on the bottom of the pulley. If it has slipped out, replace the fan and generator V belt. Install a new fan and generator V belt correctly.
  4. VISUALLY CHECK GENERATOR WIRING Check that the wiring is in good condition.
  5. LISTEN FOR ABNORMAL NOISE FROM GENERATOR Check that the generator does not emit any abnormal noise while the engine is running.
  6. CHECK CHARGE WARNING LIGHT CIRCUIT Turn the engine switch on (IG). Check that the charge warning light turns on. Start the engine and check that the light turns off. If the light does not operate as specified, troubleshoot the charge warning light circuit.
  7. CHECK CHARGING CIRCUIT WITHOUT LOAD Check the charging circuit. Put the vehicle in a no-load test condition and run the engine at 2000 rpm. Using a voltmeter and ammeter, measure the battery voltage and amperage. Standard amperage: 10 A or less Standard voltage: 13.2 to 14.8 V If the result is not as specified, replace the generator. HINT: If the battery is not fully charged, the ammeter reading will sometimes be more than the standard amperage.
  8. CHECK CHARGING CIRCUIT WITH LOAD Put the vehicle in a load test condition (set the headlights to high beam and set the heater blower switch to Hi) and run the engine at 2000 rpm. Using an ammeter, measure the amperage. Check the reading on the ammeter. Standard amperage: 30 A or more If the ammeter reading is less than the standard amperage, replace the generator. HINT: If the ammeter reading is less than the standard amperage even though the battery is fully charged, the load is not sufficient. Therefore, operate the wiper motor, rear window defogger, etc. to increase the load, and perform the measurement again. If the battery is not fully charged, the ammeter reading will sometimes be less than the standard amperage.

  1. REMOVE COWL TOP VENTILATOR LOUVER RH Remove the 6 clips and cowl top ventilator louver RH.
  2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation. NOTE: After the engine switch is turned off, the HDD navigation system requires approximately 6 minutes to record various types of memory and settings. As a result, after turning the engine switch off, wait 6 minutes or more before disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.

  11. REMOVE GENERATOR Remove the nut, and disconnect the harness from the +B terminal. Disconnect the generator connector. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 nuts. Using an E8 "TORX" socket wrench, remove the 2 stud bolts and generator.

  1. REMOVE GENERATOR PULLEY SST 09820-63011 (09820-06010, 09820-06021) Install SST 1-A to the pulley shaft. Install SST 1-B to SST 1-A. Hold SST 1-A on the pulley shaft area, and tighten SST 1-B to the specified torque. Torque: 39.2 N*m (400 kgf*cm, 29 ft.*lbf) NOTE: Securely fix SST 1-A to the pulley shaft. HINT: Read SST1-B tightening torque by using the reactive torque of SST 1-A. Mount 2 faces of SST2 in a vise. With SST 1-A and B attached to the generator, insert the pulley lock nut into the hexagon portion of SST2. To loosen the pulley nut, rotate SST 1-A in the generator's normal rotation direction. NOTE: With SST2 (pulley nut) fixed in place, the pulley lock nut will loosen due to the rotation of SST 1-A in the normal direction. Remove the generator from SST2. Fix SST 1-B in place, and rotate SST 1-A to the right to loosen it. Then remove SST 1-A and B from the generator. Remove the pulley lock nut and generator pulley.
  2. REMOVE GENERATOR REAR END COVER Remove the 3 nuts and generator rear end cover from the generator coil.
  3. REMOVE GENERATOR TERMINAL INSULATOR Remove the generator terminal insulator from the generator coil.
  4. REMOVE GENERATOR BRUSH HOLDER ASSEMBLY Remove the 2 screws and generator brush holder from the generator coil.
  5. REMOVE GENERATOR COIL ASSEMBLY Remove the 4 through bolts. Using SST, remove the generator coil. SST 09950-40011 (09951-04020, 09952-04010, 09953-04020, 09954-04010, 09955-04071, 09957-04010, 09958-04011)
  6. REMOVE GENERATOR ROTOR ASSEMBLY Remove the generator washer. Remove the generator rotor assembly from the drive end frame.
  7. REMOVE GENERATOR ROTOR BEARING Remove the 4 screws, and remove the retainer from the drive end frame. Using SST and a hammer, remove the generator rotor bearing from the drive end frame. SST 09950-60010 (09951-00270), 09950-70010 (09951-07100)

  1. INSPECT GENERATOR BRUSH HOLDER ASSEMBLY Using a vernier caliper, measure the exposed brush length. Standard length: 10.5 mm Minimum length: 4.5 mm If the exposed brush length is less than the minimum, replace the generator brush holder assembly.
  2. INSPECT GENERATOR ROTOR ASSEMBLY Bearing inspection When rotating the bearing, check that the bearing does not become stuck and that there is no unusual noise. If the bearing becomes stuck or there is unusual noise, replace the generator rotor assembly. Measure resistance Measure the resistance between the slip rings. Standard resistance: 1.5 to 1.9 ohms If not within the specified range, replace the generator rotor assembly. Measure the resistance between the slip ring and rotor core. Standard resistance: 1 Mohms or more If not within the specified range, replace the generator rotor assembly. Measure diameter Using a vernier caliper, measure the diameter of the slip ring. Standard diameter: 14.2 to 14.4 mm Minimum diameter: 14.0 mm If not within the specified range, adjust the diameter with sandpaper (#400). If less than the minimum, replace the generator rotor assembly.
  3. INSPECT GENERATOR ROTOR BEARING When rotating the bearing, check that the bearing does not become stuck and that there is no unusual noise. If the bearing becomes stuck or there is unusual noise, replace the generator rotor bearing.

  1. INSTALL GENERATOR ROTOR BEARING Using SST and a press, press a new generator rotor bearing into the drive end frame. SST 09950-60010 (09951-00500), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) Align the protrusions of the retainer with the drive end frame's cutouts, and then install the retainer with the 4 screws. Torque: 3.0 N*m (30 kgf*cm, 27 in.*lbf)
  2. INSTALL GENERATOR ROTOR ASSEMBLY Install the generator rotor assembly. Install the generator washer.
  3. INSTALL GENERATOR COIL ASSEMBLY Using SST and a press, press the generator coil into the drive end frame. SST 09612-70100 Tighten the 4 through bolts. Torque: 7.5 N*m (76 kgf*cm, 66 in.*lbf)
  4. INSTALL GENERATOR BRUSH HOLDER ASSEMBLY Insert a pin (diameter 1.0 mm) into the generator brush holder assembly to fix the 2 brushes in place. Install the generator brush holder to the generator coil with the 2 screws. Torque: 1.8 N*m (18 kgf*cm, 16 in.*lbf) Remove the pin (diameter 1.0 mm).
  5. INSTALL GENERATOR TERMINAL INSULATOR Install the generator terminal insulator to the generator coil.
  6. INSTALL GENERATOR REAR END COVER Install the generator rear end cover to the generator coil with the 3 nuts. Torque: 4.6 N*m (47 kgf*cm, 41 in.*lbf)
  7. INSTALL GENERATOR PULLEY SST 09820-63011 (09820-06010, 09820-06021) Install the generator pulley, and temporarily install the pulley lock nut. Install SST 1-A to the pulley shaft. Install SST 1-B to SST 1-A. Hold SST 1-A on the pulley shaft area, and tighten SST 1-B to the specified torque. Torque: 39.2 N*m (400 kgf*cm, 29 ft.*lbf) NOTE: Securely fix SST 1-A to the pulley shaft. HINT: Read SST 1-B tightening torque by using the reactive torque of SST 1-A. Mount 2 faces of SST2 in a vise. With SST 1-A and B attached to the generator, insert the pulley lock nut into the hexagon portion of SST2. To tighten the pulley nut, rotate SST 1-A in the generator's reverse rotation direction. Torque: 133 N*m (1351 kgf*cm, 98 ft.*lbf) Remove the generator from SST2. Fix SST 1-B in place, and rotate SST 1-A to the right to loosen it. Then remove SST 1-A and B from the generator. Check that the pulley rotates smoothly.
