BALL JOINT ROTATION

Inspect ball joints for wear. Move ball joint fully back and forth 4-5 times. Install nut and use torque wrench to rotate. Turn nut continuously at one turn every 2-4 seconds. Read torque on fifth turn. Replace ball joint if rotating torque exceeds specification or there is unusual resistance or looseness. See BALL JOINT ROTATING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.

BEARING BACKLASH & AXLE HUB DEVIATION

  1. Using a dial indicator near center of axle hub, check backlash in bearing shaft direction. (Scheme 40) If backlash exceeds.0020 inches (.05 mm), replace bearing.
  2. Using a dial indicator, check deviation at the surface of axle hub outside hub bolt. (Scheme 40) If deviation exceeds.0020 inches (.05 mm), replace axle hub.

With Electronic Modulated Air Suspension

Note. If vehicle height is not within specification, try to adjust by pushing down or lifting body.

  1. Place shift lever in "P" range.
  2. Bounce vehicle up and down several times to stabilize suspension.
  3. Move vehicle forward and backward by pushing to settle wheels.
  4. Block wheels to keep vehicle from rolling. Place shift lever in N range.
  5. Release parking brake.
  6. Start engine. Set height control switch in HIGH position. Wait one minute. Set height control switch in NORM position. Wait 50 seconds. Repeat switching to HIGH, waiting, and returning to NORM. Be sure to perform procedure 2 times to settle each suspension part.
  7. Measure front vehicle height from ground to center of lower control arm mounting bolt. (Scheme 41)
  8. Measure rear vehicle height from ground to center of lower control arm No. 2 mounting bolt. (Scheme 41)
  9. When radius of a wheel is 12.4 inches (315 mm) or 12.52 inches (318 mm), vehicle height should be standard. For standard vehicle height specification, see «STANDARD VEHICLE HEIGHT SPECIFICATION WITH ELECTRONIC MODULATED AIR SUSPENSION»(ref-157069-S36307768322003080400000) table. The difference between left and right side should be.39 inches (10 mm) or less. The difference between front and rear should be.49-1.67 inches (12.5-42.5 mm).
  10. If vehicle height is not within specification, adjust by turning height control sensor link.
