ON-VEHICLE REPAIRS
Note. Various components may be serviced without transmission removal. For servicing of these components, see appropriate component under ADJUSTMENTS and/or REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . For additional information on testing electrical components, see appropriate DIAGNOSIS article.
PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH
- Inspect park/neutral position switch assy: Apply parking brake and the turn ignition switch to the ON position. Depress brake pedal and check that the engine starts only when the shift lever is set in the N or P position, but does not start in other positions. Check that the back-up light comes on and the reverse warning buzzer sounds when the shift lever is set in the R position, but do not function in other positions. If a failure is found, check the park/neutral position switch for continuity. See DIAGNOSIS article.
- Adjust park/neutral position switch assy. (Scheme 20): Loosen the bolt of the park/neutral position switch and move the shift lever to the "N" position. Align the groove and the neutral basic line. Hold the switch in position and tighten the bolt to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168062-S35340773342004102900000). After adjustment, perform the Inspection described in step 1.

SHIFT LEVER POSITION
- Inspect shift lever position: When shifting from the "P" to "R" position with the ignition switch ON and brake pedal depressed, make sure that the shift lever moves smoothly and moves correctly into position. Start the engine and make sure that the vehicle moves forward when shifting lever from "N" to "D" position and moves rearward when shifting to the "R" position. If operation cannot be done as specified, inspect the park/neutral position switch assy and check the shift lever assy installation condition.
- Adjust shift lever position: Remove the nut and disconnect the shifting rod from the connecting rod swivel. (Scheme 21) Turn the control shaft lever of the neutral start switch counterclockwise until it stops, and turn it clockwise 2 notches to set it to the N position. (Scheme 22) CAUTION: Do not push the shift lever too hard. Move the shift lever to the "N" position and tighten the nut while lightly pushing the lever toward the "R" position. After adjustment, check that the shift lever moves smoothly and the shift lever and gear operate correctly.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION PARK MECHANISM
Check lock release button of selector lever for proper and smooth operation. On a safe incline, check if the parking brake alone can stabilize the vehicle.
EXTENSION HOUSING OIL SEAL
The extension housing oil seal removal and installation procedure is not available from manufacture. See OVERHAUL article.
The park/neutral position switch removal and installation procedure is not available from manufacture. See appropriate OVERHAUL article.
REVOLUTION SENSOR
Note. Sensors are available from different manufactures NCO and SP2. both use same procedures.
TRANSMISSION WIRE
| CAUTION | When working with FIPG material, perform the following: Using a razor blade and gasket scraper, remove all the old, FIPG material from the gasket surfaces. Thoroughly clean all components to remove any loose material. Clean both sealing surfaces with a non-residue solvent. Apply FIPG in continuous line width approximately 0.04 in. (1 mm) wide along the sealing surface. Parts must be assembled within 10 minutes of application. Otherwise, the FIPG material must be removed and reapplied. |
