DTC P0403: EGR CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION Lexus LS II

CAUTIONIf ECM replacement is instructed in following testing, always ensure ECM harness connector and ground circuit are okay. If either are suspect, repair and repeat testing to confirm ECM malfunction.

Circuit Description

The EGR system recirculates exhaust gas through intake system to reduce combustion temperature and NOx emissions. The amount of EGR valve opening is controlled by a step motor located inside of EGR valve. The ECM operates the stepper motor in response to engine operating conditions.

The EGR valve is closed under the following conditions

  1. Coolant temperature less than 129°F (54°C).
  2. Vehicle under deceleration.
  3. Light engine load.
  4. Engine speed more than 4000 RPM.
  5. Engine idling.
  6. Park/neutral position switch on.

DTC is set if there is an open or short in EGR stepper motor circuit. Possible causes are

  1. Open or short in EGR stepper motor circuit.
  2. EGR valve.
  3. ECM.
