Steering Column (Service Information): Other Lexus IS III

PROCEDURE

  1. REMOVE STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY (for Manual Tilt and Manual Telescopic Steering Column) Secure the steering column assembly in a vise between aluminum plates. NOTE: Do not overtighten the vise. Using a drill, drill a hole in the steering lock set bolt and insert a screw extractor. Using the screw extractor, remove the steering lock set bolt and steering lock actuator assembly.
  2. REMOVE STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY (for Power Tilt and Power Telescopic Steering Column) Using a drill, drill a hole in each steering lock set bolt and insert a screw extractor. Using the screw extractor, remove the 2 steering lock set bolts and steering lock actuator assembly.
  3. REMOVE MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU (for Power Tilt and Power Telescopic Steering Column) Remove the 2 screws and multiplex tilt and telescopic ECU.

  1. INSPECT STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY (for Manual Tilt and Manual Telescopic Steering Column) Check that the 2 capsules are securely installed to the steering column assembly as shown in the illustration. *a Capsule *b OK *c NG If the capsules are deformed, damaged or misaligned, replace the steering column assembly with a new one.
  2. INSPECT TILT STEERING GEAR WITH MOTOR ASSEMBLY (for Power Tilt and Power Telescopic Steering Column) Check that the 2 capsules are securely installed to the tilt steering gear with motor assembly as shown in the illustration. *a Capsule If the capsules are deformed, damaged or misaligned, replace the tilt steering gear with motor assembly with a new one.
  3. INSPECT TILT MOTOR (for Power Tilt and Power Telescopic Steering Column) Apply 12 V battery voltage to the tilt motor connector. Then check the steering wheel tilt operation. *a Component without harness connected (Tilt Motor) OK Measurement Condition Specified Condition 12 V battery positive (+) lead --> Terminal 2 (TIM-) 12 V battery negative (-) lead --> Terminal 1 (TIM+) The steering wheel tilts down. 12 V battery positive (+) lead --> Terminal 1 (TIM+) 12 V battery negative (-) lead --> Terminal 2 (TIM-) The steering wheel tilts up.
  4. INSPECT TELESCOPIC MOTOR (for Power Tilt and Power Telescopic Steering Column) *a Component without harness connected (Telescopic Motor) Apply 12 V battery voltage to the telescopic motor connector. Then check the steering column telescopic operation. OK Measurement Condition Specified Condition 12 V battery positive (+) lead --> Terminal 2 (TEM+) 12 V battery negative (-) lead --> Terminal 1 (TEM-) The steering column contracts. 12 V battery positive (+) lead --> Terminal 1 (TEM-) 12 V battery negative (-) lead --> Terminal 2 (TEM+) The steering column extends.

  1. INSTALL MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU (for Power Tilt and Power Telescopic Steering Column) Install the multiplex tilt and telescopic ECU with the 2 screws.
  2. INSTALL STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY (for Manual Tilt and Manual Telescopic Steering Column) HINT: When replacing the steering lock actuator assembly, perform initialization. Refer to «REGISTRATION [04/2013 - ]»(ref-665555-S15306758692014102400000) Set the steering column assembly in a vise between aluminum plates. NOTE: Do not overtighten the vise. Temporarily install the steering lock actuator assembly with a new steering lock set bolt. Tighten the steering lock set bolt until the bolt head breaks off.
  3. INSTALL STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY (for Power Tilt and Power Telescopic Steering Column) HINT: When replacing the steering lock actuator assembly, perform initialization. Refer to «REGISTRATION [04/2013 - ]»(ref-665555-S15306758692014102400000) Temporarily install the steering lock actuator assembly with 2 new steering lock set bolts. Tighten the 2 steering lock set bolts until the bolt head breaks off.

  1. INSTALL STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 2WD) w/o VGRS: Connect the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly to the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly. *a Matchmark NOTE: Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly. Temporarily install the bolt. w/ VGRS: Connect the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly to the steering actuator assembly. *a Matchmark NOTE: Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and steering actuator assembly. Temporarily install the bolt.
  2. ALIGN FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD

INSTALL NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY (w/o VGRS) for 2WD: Install the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly to the power steering link assembly. *a Matchmark NOTE: Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and power steering link assembly. Install the bolt. Torque: 35.3 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf) Tighten the clamp. for AWD: Install the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly to the power steering link assembly. *a Matchmark NOTE: Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and power steering link assembly. Install the bolt. Torque: 35.3 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf) Tighten the clamp.
  4. INSTALL STEERING ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY (w/ VGRS) Refer to «PROCEDURE - Step 3»(ref-665820-S20726793402014102400000)

INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY w/o VGRS: Install the steering column assembly to the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly. *a Matchmark NOTE: Align the matchmarks on the steering column assembly and No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly. w/ VGRS: Install the steering column assembly to the steering actuator assembly. *a Matchmark NOTE: Align the matchmarks on the steering column assembly and steering actuator assembly. Install the steering column assembly with the 4 nuts. for Manual Tilt and Manual Telescopic Steering Column Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) for Power Tilt and Power Telescopic Steering Column Torque: 25.5 N*m (260 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf) w/o VGRS: Install the bolt. Torque: 35.3 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf) Install the brake pedal return spring to the push rod pin and steering column assembly. w/ VGRS: Install the bolt. Torque: 35.3 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf) Install the brake pedal return spring to the push rod pin and steering column assembly. Connect each connector and engage each wire harness clamp to the steering column assembly. for 2WD: Fully tighten the bolt. Torque: 35.3 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)
  7. INSTALL NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER (for 2WD w/ No. 2 Engine Under Cover) for 4GR-FSE: Refer to «PROCEDURE - Step 99»(ref-665703-S03876486602014102400000) for 2GR-FSE: Refer to «PROCEDURE - Step 100»(ref-665702-S31642977202014102400000)
  8. INSTALL FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE (for 2WD) for 4GR-FSE: Refer to «PROCEDURE - Step 100»(ref-665703-S03876486602014102400000) for 2GR-FSE: Refer to «PROCEDURE - Step 101»(ref-665702-S31642977202014102400000)
  9. INSTALL FRONT WHEEL LH (for AWD) Torque: 103 N*m (1050 kgf*cm, 76 ft.*lbf)
  10. INSTALL AIR DUCT SUB-ASSEMBLY Install the air duct sub-assembly with the bolt. Torque: 9.8 N*m (100 kgf*cm, 87 in.*lbf)
  11. INSTALL LOWER NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL AIRBAG ASSEMBLY Refer to «INSTALLATION [04/2013 - ]»(ref-665530-S17060763162014102400000)
  12. INSTALL TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY NOTE: Do not replace the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly with the battery connected and the engine switch on (IG). Do not rotate the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly without the steering wheel assembly with the battery connected and the engine switch on (IG). Ensure that the steering wheel assembly is installed and aligned straight when inspecting the steering sensor. Engage the 3 claws to install the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly to the steering column assembly. Connect the each connector to the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly.
  13. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER Engage the 2 claws to install the steering column cover (upper). Engage the 6 clips to the steering column cover (upper). for Manual Tilt and Manual Telescopic Steering Column: Engage the 3 claws to install the steering column cover (lower). Install the 2 screws. for Power Tilt and Power Telescopic Steering Column: Engage the 2 claws to install the steering column cover (lower). Install the 3 screws.
  14. ALIGN FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
  15. INSPECT AND ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE WITH SENSOR SUB-ASSEMBLY Refer to «PROCEDURE - Step 4»(ref-665530-S09770702912014102400000)

Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut. *a Matchmark Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and steering main shaft. Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly. SST: 09950-50013 09951-05010 09952-05010 09953-05020 09954-05070 *a Turn *b Hold NOTE: Apply a small amount of grease to the threads and tip of SST (09953-05020) before use.
  4. REMOVE STEERING PAD SWITCH ASSEMBLY See step 2
  5. REMOVE CRUISE CONTROL MAIN SWITCH Refer to «PROCEDURE - Step 2»(ref-665556-S14922425932014102400000)
  6. REMOVE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH WIRE Remove the cruise control switch wire.
  7. REMOVE SHIFT PADDLE SWITCH (TRANSMISSION SHIFT SWITCH ASSEMBLY) Remove the 4 screws, and separate the 2 shift paddle switches (transmission shift switch assemblies) from the steering wheel assembly. Disengage the 5 guides to remove the 2 shift paddle switches (transmission shift switch assemblies) with No. 1 switch wire from the steering wheel assembly.
  8. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL HEATER CONTROL ASSEMBLY (w/ Steering Heater) Remove the 2 screws. Disengage the clamp. Disconnect the connector and remove the steering wheel heater control assembly from the lower steering wheel boss cover.
  9. REMOVE STEERING SHAKE DAMPER Remove the 2 screws and steering shake damper from the steering wheel sub-assembly.

Note. Do not replace the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly with the battery connected and the engine switch on (IG). Do not rotate the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly without the steering wheel assembly with the battery connected and the engine switch on (IG). Ensure that the steering wheel assembly is installed and aligned straight when inspecting the steering sensor.

  1. INSTALL STEERING SHAKE DAMPER Install the steering shake damper to the steering wheel sub-assembly with the 2 screws. Torque: 2.35 N*m (24 kgf*cm, 21 in.*lbf)
  2. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL HEATER CONTROL ASSEMBLY (w/ Steering Heater) Connect the connector to the steering wheel heater control assembly. Engage the clamp. Install the steering wheel heater control assembly to the lower steering wheel boss cover with the 2 screws. Torque: 0.835 N*m (9 kgf*cm, 7 in.*lbf)
  3. INSTALL SHIFT PADDLE SWITCH (TRANSMISSION SHIFT SWITCH ASSEMBLY) Engage the 5 guides to install the 2 shift paddle switches (transmission shift switch assemblies) with No. 1 switch wire to the steering wheel assembly. Install the 2 shift paddle switches (transmission shift switch assemblies) to the steering wheel assembly with 4 new screws. Torque: 1.7 N*m (17 kgf*cm, 15 in.*lbf)
  4. INSTALL CRUISE CONTROL MAIN SWITCH Refer to «PROCEDURE - Step 1»(ref-665556-S09283891252014102400000)
  5. INSTALL CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH WIRE Install the cruise control switch wire.
  6. INSTALL STEERING PAD SWITCH ASSEMBLY See step 1
  7. ALIGN FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD

  1. REMOVE HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY Refer to «REMOVAL [04/2013 - ]»(ref-665530-S03839713122014102400000)
  2. REMOVE STEERING PAD SWITCH ASSEMBLY Disconnect the steering pad switch connector from the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly. Disengage the steering pad switch connector clamp from the lower steering wheel boss cover. Disconnect the steering pad switch connector from the No. 1 switch wire. Remove the 2 screws. Disengage the 2 claws and 2 pins to remove the steering pad switch assembly from the steering wheel sub-assembly.

Check that the switch illumination comes on. OK Steering pad switch illumination comes on. HINT: If the result is not as specified, replace the steering pad switch assembly.
  1. INSTALL STEERING PAD SWITCH ASSEMBLY Engage the 2 claws and 2 pins to install the steering pad switch assembly to the steering wheel sub-assembly. Install the 2 screws. Torque: 2.35 N*m (24 kgf*cm, 21 in.*lbf) Connect the steering pad switch connector to the No. 1 switch wire. Engage the steering pad switch connector clamp to the lower steering wheel boss cover. Connect the steering pad switch connector to the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly.

  6. REMOVE TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH Slide the slider to release the lock, and then disconnect the yellow airbag connector from the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly. *a Slider NOTE: When disconnecting any airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness. Disconnect the tilt and telescopic connector from the tilt and telescopic switch. Disengage the claw and pull out the tilt and telescopic switch.
  1. INSPECT TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH Remove the tilt and telescopic switch. Refer to «REMOVAL [04/2013 - ]»(ref-665793-S18884876352014102400000) *a Component without harness connected (Tilt and Telescopic Switch) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 (VC) - 3 (MSW) Tilt up 342 to 378 ohms Tilt down 1890.5 to 2089.5 ohms Telescopic contract 750.5 to 829.5 ohms Telescopic extend 152 to 168 ohms

Note. Do not replace the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly with the battery connected and the engine switch on (IG). Do not rotate the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly without the steering wheel assembly with the battery connected and the engine switch on (IG). Ensure that the steering wheel assembly is installed and aligned straight when inspecting the steering sensor.

  1. INSTALL TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH Engage the claw to install the tilt and telescopic switch. Connect the tilt and telescopic connector to the tilt and telescopic switch. Connect the airbag connector to the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly.
  2. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER (for Lower Side) Engage the 2 claws to install the steering column cover (lower). Install the 3 screws.
  3. ALIGN FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
  4. INSPECT AND ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE WITH SENSOR SUB-ASSEMBLY Refer to «PROCEDURE - Step 4»(ref-665530-S09770702912014102400000)
  5. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY See step 9
  6. CHECK STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT

  3. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL HEATER CONTROL ASSEMBLY Disconnect the connector from the steering wheel heater control assembly. Remove the 2 screws. Disengage the clamp. Disconnect the connector and remove the steering wheel heater control assembly from the lower steering wheel boss cover.
  1. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL HEATER CONTROL ASSEMBLY Connect the connector to the steering wheel heater control assembly. Engage the clamp. Install the steering wheel heater control assembly to the lower steering wheel boss cover with the 2 screws. Torque: 0.835 N*m (9 kgf*cm, 7 in.*lbf) Connect the connector to the steering wheel heater control assembly.
  2. INSTALL CRUISE CONTROL MAIN SWITCH Refer to «PROCEDURE - Step 1»(ref-665556-S09283891252014102400000)
