The system representations shown below are intended to show concept of operation, and may not precisely reflect the construction of the system on the vehicle.

- AUTOMATIC LIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM General When the light control switch is in the AUTO position, the automatic light control system detects ambient light levels and controls the headlights, parking lights, taillights, marker lights, and license plate lights. The Main Body ECU RH controls this system. The Headlight Dimmer Switch includes the Tilt and Telescopic Switch, Fog Switch, Turn Switch, Dimmer Switch, and Light Control Switch. The Headlight Dimmer Switch signals are received by the Windshield Wiper Switch assembly, the Windshield Wiper Switch assembly forwards these signals to the Main Body ECU RH using the Body Electronics Area Network (BEAN). A direct headlight backup link (HEAD) exists between the Windshield Wiper Switch assembly and the Main Body ECU RH. If this link is grounded, the headlights will illuminate. Ambient light levels are detected by the light control sensor that is integrated in the air conditioning system's solar sensor. This signal is received directly by the Main Body ECU RH (Cowl Side Junction Block RH). The dimmer circuit in the Combination Meter controls the ground for the panel illumination. The Combination Meter bases the control of the panel illumination on signals received from the Light Control Rheostat, and other inputs. The Main Body ECU RH controls the taillights and panel illumination using the Tail relay that is built into the Main Body ECU LH (Cowl Side Junction Block LH). The Main Body ECU RH controls the Low beam illumination using the HEAD LP relay. The Front Controller uses transistors to directly operate the High Beams for models that have DRL. For models without DRL, the Front Controller operates the High Beams using a HEAD HI relay that is built into the Front Controller. The Front Controller operates the Front Parking Lights and Front Marker Lights using the FR TAIL relay that is built into the Front Controller (Engine Room No. 2 Relay Block). The Front Controller operates the Front Fog Lights using the FR FOG relay that is built into the Front Controller (Engine Room No. 2 Relay Block).
- MANUAL LIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM The function of the system is similar to the Automatic Light Control System, except the system is controlled according to the driver's inputs.
- BI-FUNCTION The models with HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlights have a Bi-function. This Bi-function increases the upper illumination area of the discharge bulb (LO/HI beam) when the HI beam is turned on. If the LO beam is selected, the upper illumination area of the discharge bulb is blocked by a shade and only the lower illumination area is used. If the HI beam is selected, the headlight solenoid slides the shutter (shade) down to allow use of the upper illumination area, thus increasing the illumination area and improving visibility when the HI beam is on. This function is activated by the Front Controller. The Front Controller receives a HI beam turn ON signal from the Main Body ECU RH and activates the headlight solenoid built into the headlight unit to slide the shade down.
- HID HEADLIGHT SYSTEM This system consists primarily of the Light Control Switch, Windshield Wiper SW Assembly, Main Body ECU RH, HEAD LP relay, discharge bulbs, and Light Control ECUs. The Main Body ECU RH controls the Low beam illumination using the HEAD LP relay. The BEAN network is used for communications. A HEAD backup link exists between the Windshield Wiper Switch and the Main Body ECU RH. The Light Control ECUs transform the voltage that is input from the battery to a high voltage of up to 20,000V and apply this voltage to the discharge bulbs in order to illuminate them. A fail-safe function is provided as a countermeasure against the high voltage that is generated in case that a problem occurs in the headlight system. NOTE: For safety reasons, do not attempt to measure the voltage output from a Light Control ECU.
- AUTOMATIC HEADLIGHT BEAM LEVEL CONTROL SYSTEM When the headlights are on, the automatic headlight beam level control system operates the headlight level actuators in accordance with movement of the vehicle. The automatic headlight beam level control system mainly consists of the AFS ECU, front height control sensor, rear height control sensor, and two headlight level actuators. The AFS ECU controls the system. The ECU detects the movement of the suspension from the front and rear height control sensors and the vehicle speed from the front RH and LH speed sensors. The ECU then controls the headlight level actuator based on this information, in order to change the headlight reflector angle. The AFS ECU controls both the level control system and the intelligent AFS system. Initial Set Control When the AFS ECU detects a vehicle speed of 1 km/h (0.6 mph) and the engine is running at 400 rpm, the ECU executes the initial setting of the stepper motors. Fail-Safe Function If the AFS ECU detects a malfunction in the automatic headlight beam level control system, the AFS ECU effects fail-safe control. At the same time, the AFS ECU flashes the AFS OFF indicator light in order to inform the driver of the problem.
- INTELLIGENT AFS (ADAPTIVE FRONT-LIGHTING SYSTEM) An intelligent AFS (Adaptive Front-lighting System) is used in order to turn the LO/HI (discharge) Beam toward the inside of the cornering direction. The separate (incandescent) HI Beam illumination is not controlled by this system. Swivel Angle Range SWIVEL ANGLE RANGE REFERENCE Driving Condition Headlight Unit Left Right Right Turn 0° Fixed 0 to 5° to Right Left Turn 0 to 15° to Left 0° Fixed This system consists of the two headlight units for LO/HI Beam (discharge illumination), the AFS ECU, two headlight swivel actuators, steering angle sensor and front speed sensors. The AFS ECU controls this system. The AFS ECU also controls the automatic headlight beam level control system. The system does not control the incandescent HI beam illumination. The lights controlled by this system (LO/HI Beam) are shown in the Front Lighting illustration. The AFS ECU performs intelligent AFS control when all the following conditions are fulfilled. Engine is running. Vehicle is moving* forward at 6 mph (10 km/h) or more, or stopped. Steering angle* is 7.5° or more. Headlight LO/HI beam operates. Daytime running light system is not operating. AFS ON/ OFF condition is ON. *: Swivel angle change is accordance with the vehicle speed and steering angle. The minimum vehicle speed to change the swivel is 6 mph (10 km/h) if the steering angle is large. The minimum steering angle to change the swivel is 7.5° if the vehicle speed is high. The AFS ECU calculates the target lighting angle of the LO/HI beam based on the steering angle and the vehicle speed. Then, it actuates the headlight swivel actuators in order to attain the target lighting angle. The operation angle of the headlights is detected by the position (number of steps) of the stepper motor in the headlight swivel actuator.
- DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHT SYSTEM A daytime running light system is designed to automatically illuminate the headlights (dimmed HI beams), during the daytime to make the car more visible to other vehicles. The Main Body ECU RH and Front Controller control this system. The Main Body ECU RH transmits a turn ON signal to the front controller, and the front controller illuminates the HI beams using a duty control. This system is enabled when the conditions given below are met: Power Source: IG-ON Engine Speed Signal Input (Engine Running Condition) Light Control Switch OFF, TAIL, or AUTO position (if headlight-on control is not being performed by the automatic light control.) - ILLUMINATED ENTRY SYSTEM General The illuminated entry system has the seven control functions shown in the following chart: ILLUMINATED ENTRY SYSTEM Control Operation Outline Lights that Operate Actuation Area-linked Turn ON When the key enters any actuation area around the doors, the front and rear seat illumination turns on. A key is not in the actuation area. There are no changes in the condition of the doors for 20 minutes. (2) Stops the illumination, starts to fade out immediately (fades out over three seconds). (3) The footwell lights go off when the light control rheostat is adjusted to the minimum level.
- TURN SIGNALS The turn signals are front, rear and side lights that can be used to indicate a change of vehicle direction. The Turn Signal Switch signals are received by the Windshield Wiper Switch Assembly (Combination switch ECU). The Main Body ECU LH operates the Turn Signal Flasher. The Turn Signal Flasher operates the Signal Lights. HINT: The lights that are controlled are shown in the Front Lighting and Rear Lighting illustrations.
- HEADLIGHT CLEANER SYSTEM Some vehicles are provided with a headlight cleaner system. More details on the headlight cleaner system operation can be found in the wiper information.

- CHECK AUTOMATIC LIGHT CONTROL SENSOR (OPERATION) Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the intelligent tester main switch on. Select the "DATA LIST" on the intelligent tester. The swivel actuator receives the signal from the AFS ECU to operate and sends the signal regarding the direction of the headlight and condition of the headlight swivel motor to the AFS ECU.

The headlight relay is turned ON by operating the headlight switch.
When the theft deterrent system is activated, it causes the ECU to turn the headlight relay on and off repeatedly at approximately 0.25 second intervals to flash the headlights.

This Bi- function is activated by the Front Controller. The Front Controller receives a HI beam turn ON signal from the main body ECU RH and activates the headlight solenoid built into the headlight unit to slide the shade down.
When the LO beam headlight is switched on, the upper illumination area of the discharge bulb is blocked by the shade and only the lower illumination area is used. When the HI beam is turned on, the headlight solenoid slides the shutter down to allow use of the upper illumination area, thus increasing the illumination area and improving visibility when the HI beam is on.

Front light
The front controller controls the operation of the FR TAIL relay. The FR TAIL relay turns on the front side marker lights and parking lights.
The front controller receives front side marker and parking light ON request signals from the combination switch ECU through BEAN communication and activates the FR TAIL relay.
The FR TAIL relay is built into the front controller, so unlike conventional relays, it cannot be removed for inspection.
Rear light
The main body ECU RH controls the operation of the TAIL relay. The TAIL relay turns on the taillights, license plate lights, and side marker lights.
The main body ECU RH receives taillight, license plate light, and side marker light ON request signals from the combination switch ECU through BEAN communication and activates the TAIL relay.
The TAIL relay is built into the cowl side J/B LH, so unlike conventional relays, it cannot be removed for inspection.

The operation timing of the scuff plate lights is the same as that of the front and rear interior lights. The scuff plate lights turn on when a door is opened, and turn off when the door is closed. This illumination setting can be canceled using the overhead J/B switch.
In addition, the scuff plate lights blink while the theft deterrent system is sounding an alarm.
The turning on and off of the scuff plate lights is controlled by the main body ECU LH based on various signals received through BEAN communication.
The main body ECU LH includes a MOS-FET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor - Field Effect Transistor) circuit that fades the scuff plate lights in and out by duty control.
This MOS-FET circuit has an overheat protection function as fail-safe. If the main body ECU LH becomes excessively hot, the scuff plate lights turn off and remain off.
Normal operation will resume when the conditions required to turn on the scuff plate lights are met again.

This MOS-FET circuit has an overheat protection function as a fail-safe. If the main body ECU LH becomes excessively hot, the seat illumination turns off and remains off.

NOTE: After the headlight gasket is removed, be sure to replace it with a new one. Failure to do this may cause water ingress. Disconnect the connector. Remove the No. 2 headlight bulb as shown in the illustration.
- REMOVE PARKING LIGHT BULB Turn the parking light bulb and the parking light socket in the direction indicated by the arrow and remove them as a unit. Remove the parking light bulb from the parking light socket.
- REMOVE PARKING LIGHT SOCKET Disconnect the connector and remove the parking light socket.
- REMOVE FRONT TURN SIGNAL LIGHT BULB Turn the front turn signal light bulb and the front turn signal lights socket in the direction indicated by the arrow and remove them as a unit. Turn the 2 front turn signal light bulbs and the 2 front turn signal light sockets in the direction indicated by the arrow and remove them as a unit. Remove the 2 front turn signal light bulbs from the 2 front turn signal light sockets.
- REMOVE HEADLIGHT WIRE HARNESS Disconnect the connector and remove the headlight wire harness.
- REMOVE FRONT BUMPER SIDE SUPPORT Remove the 3 screws and front bumper side support.
- REMOVE HEADLIGHT LEVELING MOTOR (for Discharge Headlight) Align the notches of the headlight leveling motor and the housing, and pull out the headlight leveling motor slightly. Lower the tip of the headlight leveling motor to disengage it from the reflector and remove the headlight leveling motor.
- REMOVE HEADLIGHT LEVELING MOTOR BASE PACKING Remove the headlight leveling motor base packing. NOTE: After the headlight leveling motor base packing is removed, be sure to replace it with a new one. Failure to do this may cause water ingress.
- REMOVE HEADLIGHT SWIVEL MOTOR (for Discharge Headlight) Remove the screw and headlight protector. Remove the 4 screws. Install a drill bit into a drill. Wrap the drill bit of the drill with tape. HINT: Tape is used to prevent drilling too deeply into the headlight unit. Press the drill lightly against the point shown by the arrow and drill into the headlight unit. Using a file, enlarge the hole in the headlight using the groove as a guideline. Remove the 3 screws. Disconnect the connector and remove the washer and headlight swivel motor.
- REMOVE LIGHT CONTROL ECU SUB-ASSEMBLY (for Discharge Headlight) Disconnect the connector and remove the light control ECU sub-assembly. NOTE: The light control ECU sub-assembly cannot be removed unless the headlight swivel motor is removed.
- REMOVE HEADLIGHT GASKET Remove the headlight gasket. NOTE: After the headlight gasket is removed, be sure to replace it with a new one. Failure to do this may cause water ingress.

- VEHICLE PREPARATION FOR HEADLIGHT AIM ADJUSTMENT Prepare the vehicle: Ensure there is no damage or deformation to the body around the headlights. Fill the fuel tank. Make sure that the oil is filled to the specified level. Make sure that the coolant is filled to the specified level. Inflate the tires to the appropriate pressure. Place the spare tire, tools, and jack in their original positions. Unload the trunk. Sit a person of average weight (68 kg, 150 lb) in the driver's seat.
- PREPARATION FOR HEADLIGHT AIMING (Using a tester) Prepare the vehicle for headlight aim check. Adjust in accordance with headlight tester instructions.
- PREPARATION FOR HEADLIGHT AIMING (Using a screen) Prepare the vehicle according to the following conditions: Place the vehicle in a location that is dark enough to clearly observe the cutoff line. The cutoff line is a distinct line, below which light from the headlights can be observed and above which it cannot. Place the vehicle at a 90° angle to the wall. Create a 7.62 m (25 ft) distance between the vehicle (headlight bulb center) and the wall. Place the vehicle on a level surface. Bounce the vehicle up and down to settle the suspension. NOTE: A distance of 7.62 m (25 ft) between the vehicle (headlight bulb center) and the wall is necessary for proper aim adjustment. If unavailable, secure a distance of exactly 3 m (9.84 ft) for check and adjustment. (The target zone will change with the distance, so follow the instructions in the illustration.) Prepare a piece of thick white paper (approximately 2 m (6.6 ft) (height) x 4 m (13.1 ft) (width)) to use as a screen. Draw a vertical line down the center of screen (V line). Set the screen as shown in the illustration. HINT: Stand the screen perpendicular to the ground. Align the V line on the screen with the center of the vehicle. Draw base lines (H line, V LH, V RH lines) on the screen as shown in the illustration. HINT: The base lines differ for "low-beam inspection" and "high-beam inspection." Mark the headlight bulb center marks on the screen. If the center mark cannot be observed on the headlight, use the center of the headlight bulb or the manufacturer's name marked on the headlight as the center mark. H Line (Headlight height): Draw a horizontal line across the screen so that it passes through the center marks. The H line should be at the same height as the headlight bulb center marks of the low-beam headlights. V LH Line, V RH Line (Center mark position of left- hand (LH) and right-hand (RH) headlights): Draw two vertical lines so that they intersect the H line at each center mark (aligned with the center of the low-beam headlight bulbs).
- HEADLIGHT AIMING INSPECTION Cover or disconnect the connector of the headlight on the opposite side to prevent light from the headlight not being inspected from affecting headlight aiming inspection. NOTE: Do not keep the headlight covered for more than 3 minutes. The headlight lens is made of synthetic resin, and may easily melt or be damaged due to heat. HINT: When checking the aim of the high-beam, cover the low-beam or disconnect the connector. Start the engine. Turn on the headlight and make sure that the cutoff line falls within the specified area, as shown in the illustration. HINT: Since the low-beam light and the high-beam light are a unit, if the aim on one is correct, the other should also be correct. However, check both beams just to make sure. Alignment distance is 7.62 m (25 ft): The cutoff line is 101 mm (3.97 in.) above and below the H line as well as left and right of the V line with low-beam (SAE J599). Alignment distance is 3 m (9.84 ft): The cutoff line is 40 mm (1.57 in.) above and below the H line as well as left and right of the V line with low-beam (SAE J599). Alignment distance is 7.62 m (25 ft): The cutoff line is 101 mm (3.97 in.) above and below the H line as well as left and right of the V line with high-beam (SAE J599). Alignment distance is 3 m (9.84 ft): The cutoff line is 40 mm (1.57 in.) above and below the H line as well as left and right of the V line with high-beam (SAE J599). Alignment distance is 7.62 m (25 ft): The cutoff line is 53 mm (2.08 in.) below the H line with low-beam. Alignment distance is 3 m (9.84 ft): The cutoff line is 21 mm (0.82 in.) below the H line with low-beam.
- HEADLIGHT AIMING ADJUSTMENT Adjust the aim vertically: Adjust the headlight aim into the specified range by turning aiming screw with a screwdriver. NOTE: The final turn of the aiming screw should be made in the clockwise direction. If the screw is tightened excessively, loosen it and then retighten it, so that the final turn of the screw is in the clockwise direction. HINT: Perform low-beam aim adjustment. The headlight aim moves up when turning the aiming screw clockwise, and moves down when turning the aiming screw counterclockwise.
