Wiper/washer System: Overview — Lexus IS I (1999-2005)

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

WARNING

CAUTION

When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

Washer Continuous Operation

With the washer SW turned to on, the current flows from TERMINAL 2 of the washer motor to TERMINAL 1 to TERMINAL 11 of the front wiper and washer SW to TERMINAL 2 to GROUND and causes the washer motor to run, and the window washer emits a water spray. This causes the current to flow to washer continuous operation circuit in TERMINAL 17 of the front wiper and washer SW to TERMINAL 7 to TERMINAL 1 of the front wiper motor to TERMINAL 5 to GROUND and operates the wiper. SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK

Trouble shooting of a wiper/washer or headlight cleaner system complaint begins with verification of the customer problem. If problem occurs, go to step 3 . If problem does not occur, go to next step.
If problem does not occur, review conditions under which problem occurred for customer and try to duplicate those conditions. For example, if the problem occurs on rainy days or during high humidity conditions, sprinkle water onto vehicle and see if malfunction occurs. DO NOT sprinkle water directly into engine compartment or onto electronic components. Visually inspect for signs of mechanical and electrical damage. Inspect for blown fuses and damaged relays. Inspect for loose or corroded connections, damaged wiring harnesses and/or switches. Check for a broken or partially broken wire inside insulation, which could cause system malfunction but prove good in a continuity/voltage check with system disconnected. Ensure any aftermarket electronic equipment is properly installed. If fault is found, repair as necessary.

After repairs have been completed, confirm that problem has been eliminated. Operate the system under same conditions recorded for original complaint. If problem is no longer present, repair has corrected problem. If problem is still present, further diagnosis and repair is required.

(1) Perform test procedures in order listed under suspected area. (2) Check the H-LP CLN fuse located in the engine room junction block. (3) Check the WASHER fuse located in the driver side junction block. (4) Check the ignition switch. See STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. (10) Check the WIP fuse located in the driver side junction block. (11) Check the wiper/washer switch. See WIPER MOTOR (FRONT) under COMPONENT TESTS and WIPER MOTOR (FRONT) CIRCUIT under CIRCUIT TESTS. (13) Check the washer motor. See WASHER MOTOR (FRONT) under COMPONENT TESTS and WASHER MOTOR CIRCUIT under CIRCUIT TESTS. (14) Check the wiper motor. See WIPER MOTOR (FRONT) under COMPONENT TESTS and WIPER MOTOR (FRONT) CIRCUIT under CIRCUIT TESTS. Inspect the wiper arm and blade set positions. (15) Check the wire harness. Inspect the wiper arm and blade set positions. (16) Check the rear wiper motor. See WIPER MOTOR (REAR) under COMPONENT TESTS and WIPER MOTOR (REAR) CIRCUIT under CIRCUIT TESTS. (17) Check the rear wiper/washer switch. See WIPER/WASHER SWITCH (REAR) under COMPONENT TESTS and WIPER/WASHER SWITCH CIRCUIT under CIRCUIT TESTS. (18) Check the rear washer motor. See WASHER MOTOR (REAR) under COMPONENT TESTS and WASHER MOTOR CIRCUIT under CIRCUIT TESTS.

(1)	Perform test procedures in order listed under suspected area.

(2)	Check the H-LP CLN fuse located in the engine room junction block.

(3)	Check the WASHER fuse located in the driver side junction block.

(4)	Check the ignition switch. See STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.

(5)	Check the headlight cleaner switch. See HEADLIGHT CLEANER SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS and HEADLIGHT CLEANER SWITCH CIRCUIT under CIRCUIT TESTS.

(6)	Check the headlight cleaner relay. See HEADLIGHT CLEANER RELAY under COMPONENT TESTS and HEADLIGHT CLEANER RELAY CIRCUIT under CIRCUIT TESTS.

(7)	Check the headlight cleaner motor. See HEADLIGHT CLEANER MOTOR under COMPONENT TESTS and HEADLIGHT CLEANER MOTOR CIRCUIT under CIRCUIT TESTS.

(8)	Check the headlight cleaner nozzle and hose.

(9)	Check the wire harness.

(10)	Check the WIP fuse located in the driver side junction block.

(11)	Check the wiper/washer switch. See WIPER/WASHER SWITCH (FRONT) under COMPONENT TESTS and WIPER/WASHER SWITCH CIRCUIT under CIRCUIT TESTS.

(12)	Check the wiper motor. See WIPER MOTOR (FRONT) under COMPONENT TESTS and WIPER MOTOR (FRONT) CIRCUIT under CIRCUIT TESTS.

(13)	Check the washer motor. See WASHER MOTOR (FRONT) under COMPONENT TESTS and WASHER MOTOR CIRCUIT under CIRCUIT TESTS.

(14)	Check the wiper motor. See WIPER MOTOR (FRONT) under COMPONENT TESTS and WIPER MOTOR (FRONT) CIRCUIT under CIRCUIT TESTS. Inspect the wiper arm and blade set positions.
