- CUSTOMER PROBLEM ANALYSIS CHECK HINT: In troubleshooting, confirm that the problem symptoms have been accurately identified. Preconceptions should be discarded in order to make an accurate judgment. To clearly understand what the problem symptoms are, it is extremely important to ask the customer about the problem and the conditions at the time the malfunction occurred. Gather as much information as possible for reference. Past problems that seem unrelated may also help in some cases. The following 5 items are important points for problem analysis: What Vehicle model, system name When Date, time, occurrence frequency, whether the problem occurred recently or has been occurring for a long time Where Whether the problem occurs at a specific location Under what conditions? Whether the doors were locked or unlocked, whether the engine switch was on, whether the engine has started How did it happen? Problem symptoms* *: Be sure to ask the customer in detail about the following points concerning the vehicle operating conditions, environment and problem, and then check for DTCs. If the entry lock/unlock function does not operate for all doors. If the entry lock function does not operate. If the entry unlock function does not operate. If both the entry lock and unlock functions do not operate. If the wireless lock and unlock functions do not operate. If there is no power even when the engine switch is pressed (does not turn on (ACC)). If the engine does not start with the push-button start function. If the wireless answer-back buzzer and outside warning buzzers do not sound. If the customer attempted to start the engine by touching the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly the engine switch and pressing the engine switch. If the interior warning buzzers do not sound. If the steering does not unlock. Any other details concerning the problem. If it is suspected that wave interference is likely, be sure to ask the customer in detail about the following points concerning the vehicle operating conditions, environment and problem. Specific locations where the system does not operate (such as near TV towers, large video displays, wireless garage door opener systems, wireless security cameras, home security systems, etc.). Specific times when the system does not operate: Whether or not symptoms occurred immediately after purchase or only recently. Whether or not the symptoms occurred even when the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly was near the vehicle (electrical key antenna). If the system does not operate only when near specific vehicles (there may be wave interference from the wireless systems of other vehicles). If the system operates intermittently. If the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is bundled together with other items. If the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is carried together with other electronic devices, such as cell phones, personal computers, portable music players, other electrical key transmitter sub-assemblies, etc. (keep the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly at least 0.1 m (0.33 ft.) away from such items). Where the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is being kept when not in use: Whether or not the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is being placed within 1 m (3.28 ft.) of items such as TVs, DVD recorders, induction cookers, rice cookers, dishwashers, modems, cell phones, personal computers, microwave ovens, desk or floor lamps, cordless telephones, etc. If there are electronic devices that transmit radio waves placed in the vehicle. When the transmitter battery was last replaced. The transmitter battery can be checked using the "Key Low Battery" item in the Data List. - INSPECT BASIC OPERATION Inspect battery voltage. Standard Voltage 11 to 14 V NOTE: If the voltage is below 11 V, recharge or replace the battery before proceeding to the next step. - OPERATION DESCRIPTION Push-button start function: When the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is in a detection area inside the vehicle and the brake pedal is depressed, the engine is started by pressing the engine switch. When the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is in a detection area inside the vehicle and the brake pedal is not depressed, the power source mode is changed by pressing the engine switch. The power source mode changes in the following order every time the engine switch is pressed: off --> on (ACC) --> on (IG) --> off. After getting into the vehicle while carrying the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly when the engine switch is off, if the engine switch is pressed while not depressing the brake pedal, the power source mode changes to on (ACC). After getting into the vehicle while carrying the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly when the engine switch is off, if the engine switch is pressed 2 times without depressing the brake pedal, the power source mode changes to on (IG). After getting into the vehicle while carrying the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly when the engine switch is off, if the brake pedal is depressed while the shift lever is in P or N, the smart warning light is displayed. The engine starts if the engine switch is pressed when the smart warning light is displayed. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Smart Warning Light Display Changing the power source mode when the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly does not operate correctly due to wave interference or transmitter battery depletion: Unlock the door using the built-in mechanical key and get into the vehicle while carrying the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly. While depressing the brake pedal and facing the logo side of the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly towards the engine switch, hold the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly near the engine switch. A buzzer in the combination meter assembly will sound and the power source mode changes to on (IG). Pressing the engine switch without depressing the brake pedal turns the power source mode from off to on (ACC). Starting the engine when the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly does not operate correctly due to wave interference or transmitter battery depletion: Unlock the door using the built-in mechanical key and get into the vehicle while carrying the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly. While depressing the brake pedal with the shift lever in P or N* and facing the logo side of the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly towards the engine switch, hold the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly near the engine switch. HINT: *: This is only applicable when the steering is unlocked. A buzzer in the combination meter assembly will sound the power source mode changes to on (IG) and the smart warning light is displayed. Press the engine switch with the brake pedal depressed to start the engine.
- CHECK PUSH-BUTTON START FUNCTION Check the push-button start function: Get into the vehicle while carrying the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly with the engine switch off. With the shift lever in P, check that the smart warning light is displayed when the brake pedal is depressed. Then check that the engine starts when the engine switch is pressed after the smart warning light is displayed. While the brake pedal is released and the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is being carried, check that the power source mode changes in the following order when the engine switch is pressed: off --> on (ACC) --> on (IG) --> off. HINT: When the engine switch is pressed with the engine switch on (IG) and the shift lever not in P, the power source mode does not change to off, but changes to on (ACC). With the shift lever in P, check that the steering lock operates when a door is opened. HINT: When the engine switch is pressed after the vehicle is stopped, the engine stops and all the power turns off. However, if the shift lever is not in P when the engine switch is pressed with the vehicle stopped, the power source mode does not change to off, but changes to on (ACC). Check the push-button start function operation range for the front side. Place the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly at either inspection point so that it is facing the direction shown in the illustration, and then check that the engine can be started. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Inspection Point NOTE: Even if the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is in a vehicle interior key detection area, the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly may not be properly detected if the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is on the instrument panel, in the glove box or on the floor. Communication may not be possible if the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is within 0.2 m (0.656 ft.) of the shift lever. HINT: Perform this inspection for both inspection points. Check the push-button start function operation range for the rear side. Place the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly at either inspection point so that it is facing the direction shown in the illustration, and then check that the engine can be started. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Inspection Point NOTE: Even if the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is in a vehicle interior key detection area, the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly may not be properly detected if the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is on the instrument panel, in the glove box or on the floor. Communication may not be possible if the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is within 0.2 m (0.656 ft.) of the center of the rear seat. HINT: Perform this inspection for both inspection points.
- CHECK TRANSMITTER BATTERY SAVING FUNCTION Check the transmitter battery saving function: Press the unlock switch of the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly twice while pressing the lock button and check that the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly LED blinks 4 times and enters transmitter battery saving mode. Check that the smart access system with push-button start (for Start Function) does not operate while in transmitter battery saving mode. HINT: To cancel transmitter battery saving mode, press a button of the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly.
- CHECK POWER SOURCE MODE CHANGING FUNCTION Check the engine switch. Check that the power source mode changes according to the chart below. DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM [06/2012 - ]
- DESCRIPTION Smart access system with push-button start (for Start Function) data and Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) can be read through the Data Link Connector 3 (DLC3) of the vehicle. When the system seems to be malfunctioning, use the Techstream to check for malfunctions and perform repairs.
- CHECK DLC3 Check the DLC3. Refer to «GENERAL INFORMATION [06/2012 - ]»(ref-598449-S41583545682014021400000) .
- INSPECT BATTERY VOLTAGE Measure the battery voltage. Standard Voltage 11 to 14 V If the voltage is below 11 V, recharge or replace the battery.

HINT
If the Techstream is connected to the vehicle with the engine switch off, the information stored in smart access system with push-button start related ECUs cannot be read. However, smart access system with push-button start DTCs and Data List information can be confirmed even if the engine switch is off using the following method
- When using the Techstream with the vehicle engine switch off, connect the Techstream to the vehicle and turn a courtesy light switch on and off at intervals of 1.5 seconds or less until communication between the Techstream and the vehicle begins. Then select the vehicle type under manual mode and enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Smart Access. While using the Techstream, periodically turn a courtesy light switch on and off at intervals of 1.5 seconds or less to maintain communication between the Techstream and the vehicle.
- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3, select the vehicle type under manual mode, and then enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Smart Access / Trouble Codes.

This non-intrusive inspection can be very useful because intermittent conditions or signals may be discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed.
