VARIABLE INDUCTION AIR CONTROL SYSTEM
Note. Information for FX35 and G35 is not available from manufacturer.
Power & Ground Circuits (FX35 & FX45)
- Start engine. Is engine running? If yes, go to step 10. If not, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position and then to ON position. Check voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 109 (White/Blue wire). Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to step 4. If voltage is notas specified, go to next step.
- Check the following: Fuse block (J/B) connector M1. 15-amp fuse. Harness for open or short between ECM and fuse. Repair harness or connectors as necessary.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between engine ground and ECM terminals No. 1, 115 and 116. (Scheme 51) Continuity should exist. Check harness for short to power. If no problem is found, go to step 6. If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors F102 and M82. Harness for open or short between ECM and engine ground. Repair open circuit or short to power in harness or connectors as necessary.
- Reconnect ECM harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Check voltage between ground and IPDM E/R connector E7 terminal No. 17. (Scheme 51) Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, see appropriate IGNITION COIL & POWER TRANSISTOR test in IGNITION SIGNAL under IGNITION SYSTEM. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position then OFF. Check voltage between ground and ECM terminals No. 119 and 120. (Scheme 51) After turning ignition switch to OFF position, battery voltage will exist for a few seconds, then drop to about zero volts. If voltage is as specified, go to step 16. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists for more than a few seconds, go to step 16.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Check voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 111. (Scheme 51) Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, go to step 11.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector. Disconnect IPDM E/R harness connector E7. Check harness continuity between ECM terminals No. 119, 120 and IPDM E/R terminal No. 18. (Scheme 51) Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to step 14. If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness or connectors E211 and M41. Harness for open or short between ECM and IPDM E/R. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector. Disconnect IPDM E/R harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 111 and IPDM E/R terminal No. 46. See (Scheme 51) Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to step 13. If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness of connectors E211 and M41. Harness for open or short between ECM and IPDM E/R. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Disconnect 20-amp fuse from IPDM E/R. Inspect 20-amp fuse. If fuse is okay go to step 16. If fuse is faulty, replace 20-amp fuse.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between engine ground and ECM terminals No. 1, 115 and 116. (Scheme 51) Continuity should exist. Also heck harness for short to power. If problem is found, make appropriate repairs to open circuit or short to power in harness. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors F102 and M82. Harness for open or short between ECM and engine ground. Repair open circuit or short to power in harness or connectors as necessary.
- Problem may be intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-151809-S41696183142003010800000) in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If no mproblem is found, replace IPDM E/R. If problem is found, repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
Power & Ground Circuits (G35)
- Attempt to start engine. If engines does not run, go to next step. If engine runs, go to step 7.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Then turn ignition switch to ON position. Check voltage between ECM terminal No. 43 and ground. (Scheme 57) Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to step 4. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors M72 and F102. Fuse block (J/B) connector M4. 10-amp fuse. Harness for open or short between ECM and fuse. Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM terminals No. 48, 57, 106, 108 and engine ground. (Scheme 57) Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to power. If results are not as specified, go to next step. If results are as specified, go to step 6.
- Check the following: Joint connector-4. Harness for open or short between ECM and engine ground. Repair as necessary.
- Reconnect ECM harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Check voltage between ECM terminals No. 31 and ground. (Scheme 57) Battery voltage will exist. If voltage is as specified, see «IGNITION COIL & Power Transistor (G35)»(ref-151810-S21138768992003120400000) in IGNITION SIGNAL under IGNITION SYSTEM. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position and then ON. Check voltage between ECM terminals No. 110, 112 and ground. (Scheme 57) When ignition switch is turned to OFF position, battery voltage should exist for a few seconds and then drop to zero volts. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 10. If battery voltage remains for more than a few seconds, go to step 17.
- Disconnect ECM and IPDM E/R harness connectors. Check for continuity between ECM harness connector terminal No. 31 and IPDM E/R harness connector terminal No. 35. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. If results are not as specified, go to next step. If results are as specified, go to step 17.
- Check the following: Harness connectors E12 and F3. Harness for open or short between ECM and IPDM E/R. Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Check voltage between ECM terminal No. 38 and ground. (Scheme 57) Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, go to step 13.
- Disconnect ECM and IPDM E/R harness connectors. Check for continuity between ECM harness connector terminals No. 110, 112 and IPDM E/R harness connector terminal No. 33. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL, Continuity should exist. If continuity is not as specified, go to next step. If continuity is as specified, go to step 16.
- Check the following: Joint connector-3. Harness connectors E12 and F3. Harness for open or short between ECM and IPDM E/P. Repair as necessary.
- Disconnect ECM and IPDM E/R harness connectors. Check for continuity between ECM harness connector terminal No. 38 and IPDM E/R harness connector terminal No. 44. Continuity should exist. If results are not as specified, go to next step. If results are as specified, go to step 15.
- Check the following: Harness connectors E11 and F2. Harness for open or short between ECM and IPDM E/P. Repair as necessary.
- Disconnect 15-amp fuse from IPDM E/R. Inspect fuse. If fuse is okay, go to step 17. If fuse is faulty, replace 15-amp fuse.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM harness connector terminals No. 48, 57, 106, 108 and engine ground. (Scheme 57) Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to power. If results are not as specified, repair harness as necessary. If results are as specified, go to next step.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-151809-S41696183142003010800000) in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If results are as specified, inspection is complete.
Power & Ground Circuits (I35)
- Check ECM power supply. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check voltage between ECM terminal No. 67 and ground. (Scheme 64) Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to step 3. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors E15 and F18. Joint connector-13. 15-amp fuse. Harness for open or short between ECM and fuse. Repair or replace harness or connectors.
- Check intermittent incident. Problem may be intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-151809-S41696183142003010800000) in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If results are as specified, go to next step. If results are not as specified, repair or replace harness or connectors.
- Perform DTC confirmation procedure. Turn ignition switch to ON position, nd proceed accordingly: With CONSULT-II - Select SELF DIAG RESULTS mode with CONSULT-II. Touch ERASE. Perform DTC confirmation procedure. If the 1st trip DTC P1065 displayed, go to next step. If not, inspection is complete. With GST - Select MODE 4 with GST. Touch ERASE. Perform DTC confirmation procedure. If the 1st trip DTC P1065 is displayed, go to next step. If not, inspection is complete.
- Replace ECM. Perform initialization of IVIS (NATS) system and registration of all IVIS (NATS) ignition key IDs. See appropriate ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM aticle in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Perform Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning Procedure, Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning Procedure and Idle Air Volume Learning Procedure. See appropriate SELF DIAGNOSTIC article. If results are as specified, inspection is complete. If results are not as specified, go to next step.
- Problem may be intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-151809-S41696183142003010800000) in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If no mproblem is found, replace IPDM E/R. If problem is found, repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
Scheme 29
- Start engine. If engine is running, go to step 10. If engine is not running, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position and then ON. Check voltage between ECM terminal No. 53 and ground. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to step 4. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors E33 and F33. Fuse block (J/B) No. 1 connector M1. Fuse block (J/B) No. 2 connectors M143 and E215. Joint connector-19. 15-amp fuse. Harness for open or short between ECM and fuse. Repair harness or connectors as needed.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM harness connector terminals No. 156, 159, 165, 168 and engine ground. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to power. If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, go to step 6
- Check the following: Joint connector-29. Harness for open or short between ECM and ground. Repair open circuit or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Disconnect ECM relay. (Scheme 29) Check voltage between ECM relay terminals No. 2, 5 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to step 8. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check the following: 10-amp fuse. 20-amp fuse. Fuse block (J/B) No. 2 connector E215. Fuse, fusible link and relay block (J/B) connector E3. Harness for open or short between ECM relay and battery. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 42 and ECM relay terminal No. 1. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If results are as specified, see «IGNITION COIL & POWER TRANSISTOR (M45)»(ref-151810-S33463954602003120100000) under IGNITION SIGNAL in IGNITION SYSTEM. If results are not as specified, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors M135 and F105. Fuse block (J/B) No. 2 connector M143. Harness for open or short between ECM relay and ECM. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position and then OFF. Check voltage between ECM terminals No. 12, 163, 166 and ground. After turning ignition switch to OFF position, battery voltage will exist for a few seconds, then will drop to zero volts. If as specified, go to step 16. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists for more than a few seconds, go to step 13.
- Disconnect ECM relay. Check voltage between ECM relay terminal No. 7 and ground. (Scheme 29) Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to step 13. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check the harness for open or short between ECM relay and 10-amp fuse. Repair open circuit or short to ground of short to power in harness or connectors.
- Check harness continuity between ECM terminals and ECM relay terminals. See «HARNESS CONTINUITY»(ref-151810-S00371319612003091800000) table. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If results are as specified, go to step 15. If results are not as specified, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors M135 and F105. Fuse block (J/B) No. 2 connector M143. Harness for open or short between ECM and ECM relay. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Check ECM relay.See «ECM RELAY»(ref-151810-S36207447432003010800000) under RELAYS in RELAYS & SOLENOIDS. (Scheme 54) Replace ECM relay if needed. If relay is okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM harness connector terminals No. 156, 159, 165, 168 and engine ground. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to power. If results are as specified, go to step 18. If results are not as specified, go to next step.
- Check the following: Joint connector-29. Harness for open or short between ECM and ground. Repair open circuit or short to power in harness or connectors.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-151809-S41696183142003010800000) in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If results of testing are as specified, inspection is complete.

- Start engine. If engine is running, go to step 9. If engine is not running, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position and then ON. Check voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 43. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to step 4. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check the following: 10-amp fuse. Harness connectors M33 and F22. Fuse block (J/B) connectors E4 and M10. Harness for open or short between ECM and ignition switch. Repair or replace components as necessary.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness for continuity between ECM terminals No. 48, 57, 106, 108 and engine ground. See PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to power. If problem is found, repair open circuit or short to power in harness or connectors as necessary. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Check power supply-II. Disconnect ECM relay. (Scheme 30) Check voltage between ground and ECM relay terminals No. 1 and 5. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to step 7. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check the following: 7.5-amp and 10-amp fuses. Harness for open or short between ECM relay and battery. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 26 and ECM relay terminal No. 2. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, see «IGNITION COIL & POWER TRANSISTOR (QX4)»(ref-151810-S04329846052003010800000) under IGNITION SIGNAL in IGNITION SYSTEM. If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors E1 and M1. Harness connectors M32 and F23. Harness for open or short between ECM relay and ECM. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Stop engine. Check voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 67 with CONSULT-II or tester. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to step 11. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors E1 and M1. Harness connectors M32 and F23. Harness for open or short between ECM and fuse. Repair harness or connectors.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position and then OFF. Check voltage between ground and ECM terminals No. 110 and 112. After turning ignition switch to OFF position, battery voltage will exist for a few seconds, then drop to about zero volts. If voltage is as specified, go to step 17. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists for more than a few seconds, go to step 14.
- Check ECM Power supply circuit-IV. Disconnect ECM relay. (Scheme 30) Check voltage between ground and ECM relay terminal No. 7. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to step 14. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check harness for open or short circuit between ECM relay and 7.5-amp fuse. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors as necessary.
- Check voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 12. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to step 16. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors E1 and M1. Harness connectors M94 and F27. Harness for open or short between ECM and fuse. Repair harness or connectors.
- Check harness continuity between ECM relay terminal No. 6 and ECM terminals No. 110 and 112. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to step 18. If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors E1 and M1. Harness connectors M32 and F23. Harness for open or short between ECM and ECM relay. Repair open circuit of short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Apply 12 volts between ECM relay terminals No. 1 and 2. (Scheme 31) Check continuity between relay terminals No. 3 and 5, and terminals No. 6 and 7. Continuity should exist. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace ECM relay.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between engine ground and ECM terminals No. 48, 57, 106 and 108. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to power. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair open circuit or short to power in harness or connectors.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-151809-S41696183142003010800000) in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If results are as specified, inspection is complete.
Power & Ground Circuits (Q45)
- Start engine. If engine starts, go to step 10. If engine does not start, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position then ON. Measure voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 53 (White/Green wire) by backprobing. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. If battery voltage exists, go to step 4. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors E32 and F32. (Scheme 33) Fuse block (J/B) No. 1 connector M1. (Scheme 35) Fuse block (J/B) No. 2 connector M143 and E215. (Scheme 32) Joint connector-19. (Scheme 34) Harness for open or short between ECM and fuse. Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check continuity between engine ground and ECM harness connector terminals No. 156 and 159. Also check continuity between engine ground and ECM harness connector and terminals No. 165 and 168. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also, check circuits for short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step 6.
- Check the following: Check joint connector No. 29. Harness for open or short between ECM and ground. Repair as necessary.
- Remove ECM relay from fuse block No. 2. (Scheme 32) Fuse block No. 2 is located under right side of instrument panel. Measure voltage between ground and ECM relay cavities No. 2 and 5. (Scheme 55) If battery voltage exists, go to step 8. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Check the following: Check fuse No. 32 (10-amp) located in fuse block No. 2. (Scheme 32) Fuse block No. 2 is located under right side of instrument panel. Check fuse No. 53 (20-amp) located in fuse, fusible link and relay block on right side of engine compartment. Check for poor connection at fuse block No. 2 connector E215. (Scheme 32) Check for poor connection at fuse, fusible link and relay block connector E3. Check for open or short between ECM relay and battery. Repair as necessary.
- Check continuity between ECM relay cavity No. 1 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 42. Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If circuit is okay, see «IGNITION COIL & POWER TRANSISTOR (Q45)»(ref-151810-S27543703102003121000000) under IGNITION SIGNAL in IGNITION SYSTEM.
- Check the following: Check harness connectors M135 and F105. Check fuse block (J/B) No. 2 connector M143. Check for open or short between ECM relay and ECM. Repair as necessary.
- Measure voltage between ground and ECM terminals No. 12, 163 and 166 by backprobing. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Turn ignition switch to ON position and then to OFF position. Battery voltage should exist for a few seconds after turning ignition switch to OFF position, then drop to about zero volts. If voltage is as specified, go to step 17. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists for more than a few seconds, go to step 13.
- Disconnect ECM relay. Check voltage between ground and ECM relay terminal No. 7 by backprobing. Battery voltage should still exist. If voltage exists, go to step 13. If voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Check harness for open or short between ECM relay and 10-amp fuse. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Check harness continuity between ECM and ECM relay specified terminals. See «HARNESS CONTINUITY»(ref-151810-S00371319612003091800000) table. HARNESS CONTINUITY ECM Terminal No. ECM Relay Terminal No. 12 3 (Harness Connector F105 Terminal 4T) 163, 166 6 Continuity should exist. Repair as necessary. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If results are as specified, go to step 16. If results are not as specified, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors M135 and F105. Fuse block (J/B) No. 2 connector M143. Harness for open or short between ECM and ECM relay. Repair as necessary.
- Check ECM relay. See «ECM RELAY»(ref-151810-S36207447432003010800000) in RELAYS under RELAYS & SOLENOIDS. If ECM relay okay, go to next step. If ECM relay not okay, replace ECM relay.
- Turn ignition to OFF position. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check continuity between engine ground and ECM harness connector terminals No. 156, 159, 165 and 168. Continuity should exist. Also check circuits for short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step 18.
- Check the following: Check joint connector No. 29. Check for open or short between ECM and engine ground. Repair as necessary. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL article.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-151809-S41696183142003010800000) in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.

FUEL LEVEL SENSOR

IGNITION SWITCH (START SIGNAL)
Note. Start signal testing information for FX35 and FX45 is not available from manufacturer.
G35
- If using CONSULT-II, go to next step. If not using CONSULT-II, go to step 3 .
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Check START SIGNAL in DATA MONITOR mode with CONSULT-II under the following conditions. If ignition switch is in ON position, start signal should be OFF. If ignition switch is in START position, start signal should be ON. If results are as specified, inspection is complete. If results are not as specified, go to step 4 .
- Check voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 42 under the following conditions. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. If ignition switch is in START position, battery voltage should exist. If ignition switch is in any other position, battery voltage should be about zero volts. If voltage is as specified, inspection is complete. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position, then turn it to START position. If starter motor operates, go to next step. If starter motor does not operate, see appropriate STARTERS article under ENGINE.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect 10-amp fuse. Inspect 10-amp fuse. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is faulty, replace 10-amp fuse.
- Reconnect 10-amp fuse. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Disconnect ignition switch harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 42 and ignition switch terminal No. 5. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to step 8 . If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors M72 and F102. Fuse block (J/B) connector M5 and E101. Harness for open or short between ignition switch and fuse block (J/B). Harness for open or short between ECM and fuse block (J/B). Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Problem may be intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-151809-S41696183142003010800000) in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. Test is complete.
I35
- If using CONSULT-II, go to next step. If not using CONSULT-II, go to step 3.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Check START SIGNAL in DATA MONITOR mode with CONSULT-II under the following conditions. If ignition switch is in ON position, start signal should be OFF. If ignition switch is in other positions, battery voltage should be about zero volts. If voltage is as specified, inspection is complete. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position, then turn it to start. If starter motor operates, go to next step. If starter motor does not operate, see appropriate STARTER article under ENGINE.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect 10-amp fuse. Inspect 10-amp fuse. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is faulty, replace 10-amp fuse.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector and ignition switch harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 42 and fuse block, ignition switch terminal No. 6. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to step 8. If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors M229 and F66. Fuse block (J/B) connectors M17 and E83. Harness for open or short between ignition switch and ECM. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Problem may be intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-151809-S41696183142003010800000) in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. Inspection is complete.

- If using CONSULT-II, go to next step. If not using CONSULT-II, go to step 3.

- Turn ignition switch to OFF position, then turn it to START position. If starter motor operates, go to next step. If starter motor does not operate, see appropriate STARTER article under ENGINE article.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect 10-amp fuse. Inspect condition of 10-amp fuse. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is faulty, replace 10-amp fuse.
- Reconnect 10-amp fuse. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Disconnect ignition switch harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 59 and ignition switch terminal No. 5. (Scheme 41) See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to step 8. If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors M135 and F105. Fuse block (J/B) No. 1 connector M1. Harness for open or short between ignition switch and fuse block (J/B) No. 1. Harness for open or short between ECM and fuse block (J/B) No. 1. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Problem may be intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-151809-S41696183142003010800000) in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. Inspection is complete.

- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Observe START SIGNAL in DATA MONITOR mode. With ignition switch in ON position, START SIGNAL should be OFF. With ignition switch in START position, START SIGNAL should be ON. If operation is as specified, test is complete. If operation is not as specified, go to step 4.
- Measure voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 59 by backprobing. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. (Scheme 39)and (Scheme 40). With ignition switch in START position, battery voltage should exist. With ignition switch in any other position, about zero volts should exist. If voltage is as specified, test is complete. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position, then to START position. If starter operates, go to next step. If starter does not operate, repair starting system. See appropriate STARTERS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Check fuse No. 14 (10-amp) located in fuse block No. 1 under left side of instrument panel. (Scheme 35) If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is not okay, replace fuse.
- Ensure fuse is reconnected. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Disconnect ignition switch harness connector (connector M70). (Scheme 33) Disconnect fuse block No. 1 connector M1. (Scheme 35) Check continuity of Light Blue wire between ECM connector terminal No. 59 and ignition switch harness connector terminal No. 5. (Scheme 40)and (Scheme 41). See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Also, check circuits for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step 8.
- Check the following: Check for poor connection at Super Multiple Junction (SMJ) connector F105 terminal 12T (Light Blue wire). Check for poor connection at fuse block No. 1 connector M1 terminal 8A (Light Blue wire). Check for open or short between ignition switch and fuse block No. 1, or between ECM and fuse block No. 1. Check for open or short between ECM and fuse block No. 1, or between ECM and fuse block No. 1. Repair as necessary.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-151809-S41696183142003010800000) in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.

- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect 7.5-amp fuse. Inspect 7.5-amp fuse. If 7.5-amp fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is faulty, replace 7.5-amp fuse.
- Disconnect ECM harness and ignition switch harness connectors. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 42, ignition switch and fuse block. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to step 8. If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors M32 and F23. Fuse block (J/B) connectors M10 and E3. Harness for open or short between ignition switch and fuse. Harness for open or short between ECM and fuse. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.

- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Loosen and retighten engine ground screws. (Scheme 42) Go to next step.
- Disconnect PSP switch harness connector. (Scheme 43) Turn ignition switch to ON position. Check voltage between ground and PSP switch terminal No. 1. Voltage should be about 5 volts. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, repair harness or connectors as necessary.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Check harness continuity between engine ground and PSP switch terminal No. 3. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to power. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair open circuit, short to ground or short to power as necessary.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 12 and PSP switch terminal No. 2. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Check PSP switch. Reconnect all disconnected harness connectors. Start engine and let it idle. Check voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 12 under specified conditions. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. See «POWER STEERING PRESSURE SWITCH VOLTAGE TEST»(ref-151810-S36746446712003101400000) table. If power steering pressure switch is okay, go to next step. If power steering pressure switch is not okay, replace power steering pressure switch.

- Check the following: Harness connectors E306 and F46. Harness for open or short between ECM and PSP switch. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness in connectors.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Check harness continuity between PSP switch terminal No. 3 and engine ground. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to power. If no problem is found, go to step 6. If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors E306 and F46. Harness for open or short between ECM and PSP switch. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness in connectors.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 12 and PSP switch terminal No. 2. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step 8.
- Check the following: Harness connectors E306 and F46. Harness for open or short between ECM and PSP switch. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness in connectors.
- Check PSP switch. Reconnect all disconnected harness connectors. Start engine and let it idle. Check voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 12 under specified conditions. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. See «POWER STEERING PRESSURE SWITCH VOLTAGE TEST»(ref-151810-S36746446712003101400000) table. - Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 89 and PSP switch terminal No. 2. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If results are as specified, go to next step. If results are not as specified, repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Check PSP switch. Reconnect all disconnected harness connectors. Start engine and let it idle. Check voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 89 under specified conditions. - Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 118 and PSP switch terminal No. 2. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If results are as specified, go to step 8. If results are not as specified, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors F5 and E315. Harness for open or short between ECM and power steering pressure switch. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Check PSP switch. Reconnect all disconnected harness connectors. Start engine and let it idle. Check voltage between ECM terminal No. 118 and ground under specified conditions. See «POWER STEERING PRESSURE SWITCH VOLTAGE TEST»(ref-151810-S36746446712003101400000) table. If the results are as specified, go to next step. If results are not as specified, replace PSP switch.

(Scheme 49) Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to power. If no problem is found, go to step 6. If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors F5 and E315. Joint connector-30. Harness for open or short between PSP switch an ECM. Repair open circuit or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 118 and PSP switch terminal No. 2. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to step 8. If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors F5 and E315. Harness for open or short between ECM and power steering pressure switch. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Check PSP switch. Reconnect all disconnected harness connectors. Start engine and let it idle. Check voltage between ECM terminal No. 118 and ground under specified conditions. - Start engine. Using CONSULT-II, check PW/ST SIGNAL in DATA MONITOR mode. When steering wheel is in Neutral position, tester should indicate OFF. When steering wheel is being turned, tester should indicate ON. If results are as specified, test is complete. If results are not as specified, go to step 4 .
- Start engine. Using voltmeter, check voltage between engine ground and ECM terminal No. 47. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. When steering wheel is in neutral position, voltmeter should indicate about 5 volts. When steering wheel is turned to full position in either direction, voltmeter should indicate zero volts. If results are as specified, test is complete. If results are not as specified , go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PSP switch harness connector. Check harness continuity between engine ground and PSP switch terminal No. 2. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If problem is found, repair open or short circuit(s) as necessary. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 47 and PSP switch terminal No. 1. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to step 7 . If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors F235 and M32. Harness connectors E1 and M1. Harness connectors E48 and E102. Harness for open or short between ECM and power steering pressure switch. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
- Disconnect PSP switch harness connector. Start engine. Connect ohmmeter leads to PSP switch terminals No. 1 and 2. Check for PSP switch continuity. When steering wheel is not being turned, continuity should not exist. When steering wheel is being turned, continuity should exist. If results are as specified, go to next step. If results are not as specified, replace PSP switch.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-151809-S41696183142003010800000) in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.

FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE
Remove fuel pump fuse. Start engine and allow it to run until engine stalls due to lack of fuel. Crank engine 2-3 more times to verify all fuel pressure has dissipated.
FUEL DELIVERY
For basic fuel pressure procedures and specifications, see FUEL SYSTEM in appropriate BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article.
Fuel Pump Control System (G35)
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Pinch fuel hose (at filter outlet) with fingers. For 5 seconds after ignition is turned on, pulsation should be felt on fuel hose. If pulsation is felt, system is operating normally. If pulsation is not felt, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using or voltmeter, check for voltage between and ground and ECM harness connector terminal No. 23. (Scheme 57) If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists go to step 5
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Intelligent Power Distribution Module - Engine Room (IPDM E/R) harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using CONSULT-II or voltmeter, check for voltage between and ground and IPDM E/R harness connector E7 terminal No. 20. (Scheme 58) If battery voltage exists, go to step 13. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Check the following: Check harness connectors E108 and M15. Check harness connectors M72 and F102. Check for open or short between ECM and IPDM E/R. Repair wiring and/or harness connectors as necessary. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure all harness connectors are reconnected. Disconnect condenser harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using CONSULT-II or voltmeter, check for voltage between and ground and condenser harness connector terminal No. 1. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Battery voltage should exist for one second after ignition switch is turned to ON position. Also check harness for short to ground or short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step 9.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove and inspect 15-amp fuse at IPDM E/R, located at right rear corner of engine compartment. If necessary, replace fuse. If no problem is found or fuse is replaced, go to next step.
- Disconnect IPDM E/R harness connector E7. Check for continuity in Black/Yellow wire between condenser connector terminal No. 1 and IPDM E/R harness connector terminal No. 23. (Scheme 58) See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Also check harness for short to ground or short to battery voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step 13.
- Inspect in-line harness connectors between condenser connector terminal No. 1 and IPDM E/R for damage or proper connection. Check harness for short to ground or short to battery voltage. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, recheck system for proper operation.
- Check for continuity between ground and condenser harness connector terminal No. 2. Also check harness for short to battery voltage. Repair or replace as necessary. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between condenser terminals No. 1 and 2. Resistance should be 1,000 ohms at 77°F (25°C). If results are as specified, go to next step. If results are not as specified, replace condenser. After repair, check system for proper operation.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect fuel level sensor unit and fuel pump harness connector, located at top of fuel tank. Check Black/Yellow wire between in-line harness connector B2 terminal No. 18 and fuel level sensor unit and fuel pump harness connector terminal No. 1. (Scheme 59) See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground or short to battery voltage. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, report open or short circuit(s) as necessary. After repair, check system for proper operation.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect fuel level sensor unit and fuel pump harness connector. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between fuel level sensor unit and fuel pump terminals No. 1 and 3. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Resistance should be one ohm at 77°F (25°C). If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace fuel pump.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-151809-S41696183142003010800000) in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.

Fuel Pump Control System (Q45)

- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove fuel pump relay from fuse block No. 2. (Scheme 32) Fuse block No. 2 is located under right side of instrument panel. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and fuel pump relay cavities No. 2 and 3. (Scheme 56) If battery voltage exists, go to step 4. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Check the following: Check fuse No. 13 (15-amp) located in fuse block No. 1 under left side of instrument panel. (Scheme 35) Check for poor connection at fuse block No. 1 connector M1 terminal 7A (Brown/White wire). (Scheme 35) Check joint connector No. 19 (connector M128). (Scheme 33)and (Scheme 34). Check for poor connection at fuse block No. 2 connector M145 terminal 7N (Brown/White wire). (Scheme 32) Check fuse No. 36 (15-amp) located in fuse block No. 2. Check for open or short between fuse and fuel pump relay. Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect fuel pump harness connector located under trunk trim. Disconnect dropping resistor harness connector. (Scheme 60) Check continuity of the following: Between fuel pump relay cavity No. 5 and fuel pump harness connector terminal No. 3 (Black/Yellow wire). Between fuel pump harness connector terminal No. 1 and dropping resistor harness connector terminal No. 2 (Green/Red wire). Between body ground and dropping resistor harness connector terminal No. 1 (Black wire). Continuity should exist. Also, check circuits for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step 6.
- Check the following: Check for poor connection at fuse block No. 2 connector M143 terminal 3L (Black/Yellow wire). (Scheme 32) Check for poor connection at Super Multiple Junction (SMJ) connector M141 terminal 69V (Black/Yellow wire). (Scheme 61) Connector M141 is located near right kick panel. (Scheme 33) Check for open or short between fuel pump relay and fuel pump. Check for poor connection at White, 10-pin in-line connector B63 terminal No. 7 (Green/Red wire). Connector B63 is located at right rear of trunk. Check for open or short between fuel pump and dropping resistor. Check for open or short between dropping resistor and body ground. Repair as necessary. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check continuity between fuel pump relay cavity No. 1 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 41 (Gray wire). See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If circuit is okay, go to step 8.
- Check the following: Check for poor connection at Super Multiple Junction (SMJ) connector F105 terminal 3T (Gray wire). Check for open or short between ECM and fuel pump relay. Repair as necessary.
- Measure resistance between dropping resistor terminals. Resistance should be.9 ohms at 77°F (25°C). If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace dropping resistor.
- Check fuel pump relay. See «RELAYS»(ref-151810-S00405593872003010800000) under RELAYS & SOLENOIDS. If relay is okay, go to next step. If relay is not okay, replace fuel pump relay.
- Measure resistance between fuel pump terminals No. 1 and 3. (Scheme 62) Resistance should be 0.2-5.0 ohms at 77°F (25°C). If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace fuel pump.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-151809-S41696183142003010800000) in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.

Fuel Injector
Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect fuel injector harness connector. Measure resistance between injector terminals. Resistance should be 13.5-17.5 ohms at 68°F (20°C). Replace injector if resistance is not as specified.
Fuel Injector Circuits (FX35)
- Turn ignition switch to START position. If any cylinder ignites, go to next step. If no cylinder(s) ignites, go to step 3 .
- With CONSULT-II - Perform POWER BALANCE in ACTIVE TEST mode with CONSULT-II. If each circuit produces a momentary engine speed drop, system is okay. If any circuit does not produce a momentary engine speed drop, go to next step. Without CONSULT-II - Start engine. Using appropriate listening device, listen to each injector. Audible clicking sound should be heard. If clicking sound is heard, system is okay. If clicking sound is not heard, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect fuel injector harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and fuel injector harness connector terminal No. 1. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to step 5 . If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors M82 and F102. Harness connectors F251 and F50. Fuse block (J/B) connector M1. 15-amp fuse. Harness for open or short between fuel injector and fuse. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between fuel injector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminals No. 21, 22, 23, 40, 41 and 42. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. also check harness for short to ground or short to power. If no problem is found, go to step 7 . If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors F50 and F251. Harness for open circuit or short between fuel injector and ECM. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Check fuel injector. See «FUEL INJECTOR»(ref-151810-S19584376462003010800000) . If fuel injector is okay, go to next step. If component is faulty, replace fuel injector.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-151809-S41696183142003010800000) in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.

Check harness continuity between fuel injector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminals No. 21, 22, 23, 40, 41, 42, 44 and 63. Continuity should exist. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Also check harness for short to ground or short to power. If no problem is found, go to step 7 . If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors F21 and F201. Harness connectors F41 and F221. Harness for open circuit or short between fuel injector and ECM. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Check fuel injector. See «FUEL INJECTOR»(ref-151810-S19584376462003010800000) . If fuel injector is okay, go to next step. If component is faulty, replace fuel injector.

Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and fuel injector harness connector terminal No. 1. Also check voltage between ground and connector F58 terminal No. 5. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to step 5. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors M229 and F56. Harness connectors F59 and F197. Fuse block (J/B) connector M19. 10-amp fuse. Harness for open or short between fuel injector and fuse. Harness for open or short between harness connector F58 and fuse. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between fuel injector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminals No. 2, 11 and 13. Also check continuity between harness connector F58 terminal No. 6 and ECM harness connector terminals No. 1, 3 and 12. Continuity should exist. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Also check harness for short to ground or short to power. If no problem is found, go to step 7. If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors F58 and F197. Harness for open or short between harness connector F58 and ECM. Harness for open or short between fuel injector and ECM. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Remove intake manifold collector. Disconnect bank No. 1 fuel injector harness connectors. Check for harness continuity between indicated connectors. See «INJECTOR SUB-HARNESS CONTINUITY CHECK (BANK NO. 1)»(ref-151810-S40525394652003122300000) table. (Scheme 64) Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground or short to power. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair short to ground or short to power in harness. - Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check continuity between specified terminals. Continuity should exist. Measure voltage between ground and connector F21 or F41 terminal No. 5 (White/Green wire). (Scheme 65) If battery voltage exists, go to step 7. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors E32 and F32. Harness connectors F21 and F201. Harness connectors F21 and F221. Joint connector-19. Fuse block (J/B) No. 1 connector M1. (Scheme 35) Fuse block (J/B) No. 2 connectors M143 and E215. (Scheme 32) 15-amp fuse. Harness for open or short between harness connector F21 and fuse. Harness for open or short between harness connector F41 and fuse. Repair as necessary.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check continuity of appropriate wire between connector F21 or F41 and appropriate ECM harness connector terminal. IDLE CONTROL SYSTEM
Note. Idle speed is controlled by electric throttle control actuator. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article
Ignition Coil & Power Transistor (FX35)
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Attempt to start engine. If engine operates and CONSULT-II is being used for diagnosis, go to next step. If engine operates and CONSULT-II is not being used for diagnosis, go to step 3. If engine does not operate, go to step 4.
- Using CONSULT-II, perform POWER BALANCE in ACTIVE TEST mode. At each step in POWER BALANCE test, engine RPM should drop momentarily. If engine RPM drops as specified, test is complete. If engine RPM does not drop as specified, go to step 9.
- Let engine idle. Using an oscilloscope, read voltage between ground and ECM terminals No. 60, 61, 62, 79, 80 and 81. (Scheme 70) If wave pattern is as illustrated, test is complete. If wave pattern is not as illustrated, go to step 9.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position, wait at least 10 seconds and turn ignition switch to ON position. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and ECM harness connector terminals No. 119 and 120. Battery voltage should exist. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, see «POWER & GROUND CIRCUITS (FX35 & FX45)»(ref-151810-S14142438282003092400000) in ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect condenser harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and ECM harness connector terminal No. 1. Battery voltage should exist. If battery voltage exists, go to step 7. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect harness connectors E19 and F49. Check harness continuity between harness connector F49 terminal No. 3 and condenser terminal No. 1. Continuity should exist. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Also check harness for short to power or short to ground. If no problem is found, see «POWER & GROUND CIRCUITS (FX35 & FX45)»(ref-151810-S14142438282003092400000) under ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) in COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS. If problem is found, repair harness or connectors as necessary.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure condenser harness connector is disconnected. Check harness continuity between ground and condenser harness connector terminal No. 2. Continuity should exist. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Also check harness for short to power or short to ground. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair harness or connectors as necessary.
- Ensure condenser harness connector is disconnected. Measure resistance between condenser terminals No. 1 and 2. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Resistance should be 1 megohm at 77°F (25°C). If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace condenser.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure all disconnected harness connectors are reconnected. Disconnect ignition coil harness connector. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Check voltage between ground and ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 3. If battery voltage exists, go to step 11. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Check harness connectors F10 and F211. Check for open or short circuit between ignition coil and harness connector F49. Repair or replace harness or connectors as necessary.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ignition coil harness connector. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Check continuity between engine ground and ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 2. Continuity should exist. Also check for short to power. If problem is found, repair harness or connectors as necessary. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Check harness connectors F10 and F211. Check for open or short circuit between ignition coil and engine ground. Repair or replace harness or connectors as necessary.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 1 and ECM harness connector terminals No. 60, 61, 62, 79, 80 and 81. Continuity nshould exist. Also check harness for open, short to ground or short to power. If no problem is found, go to step 15. If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check harness connectors F10 and F211. Check for open or short circuit between ignition coil and ECM. Repair or replace harness or connectors as necessary.
- Disconnect ignition coil harness connectors. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance at specified terminals. See «IGNITION COIL WITH POWER TRANSISTOR RESISTANCES»(ref-151810-S16865056052003120300000) table. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace ignition coil with power transistor. Recheck system operation.

Ignition Coil & Power Transistor (FX45)
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Attempt to restart engine. If engine operates and CONSULT-II is being used for diagnosis, go to next step. If engine operates and CONSULT-II is not being used for diagnosis, go to step 3. If engine does not operate, go to step 4.
- Using CONSULT-II, perform POWER BALANCE in ACTIVE TEST mode. At each step in POWER BALANCE test, engine RPM should drop momentarily. If engine RPM drops as specified, test is complete. If engine RPM does not drop as specified, go to step 9.
- Let engine idle. Using an oscilloscope, read voltage between ground and ECM terminals No. 46, 60, 61, 62, 65, 79, 80 and 81. (Scheme 70) If wave pattern is as illustrated, test is complete. If wave pattern is not as illustrated, go to step 11.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position, wait at least 10 seconds and turn ignition switch to ON position. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and ECM harness connector terminals No. 119 and 120. Battery voltage should exist. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, see «POWER & GROUND CIRCUITS FX-35 & FX-45»(ref-151810-S14142438282003092400000) in ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect condenser harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and ECM harness connector terminal No. 1. Battery voltage should exist. If battery voltage exists, go to step 7. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect harness connectors E19 and F49. Check harness continuity between harness connector F49 terminal No. 3 and condenser terminal No. 1. Continuity should exist. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Also check harness for short to power or short to ground. If no problem is found, see «POWER & GROUND CIRCUITS (FX35 & FX45)»(ref-151810-S14142438282003092400000) under ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) in COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS. If problem is found, repair harness or connectors as necessary.

- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure all disconnected harness connectors are reconnected. Disconnect ignition coil harness connector. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Check voltage between ground and ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 3. If battery voltage exists, go to step 11. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Check harness connectors E19 and F49. Also check for open or short circuit between ignition coil and harness connector F49. Repair or replace harness or connectors as necessary.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ignition coil harness connector. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Check continuity between engine ground and ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 2. Continuity should exist. Also check for short to power. If problem is found, repair harness or connectors as necessary. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 1 and ECM harness connector terminals No. 46, 60, 61, 62, 65, 79, 80 and 81. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for open, short to ground or short to power. If problem is found, repair harness or connectors as necessary. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Disconnect ignition coil harness connectors. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance at specified terminals. See «IGNITION COIL WITH POWER TRANSISTOR RESISTANCES»(ref-151810-S16865056052003120300000) table. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace ignition coil with power transistor. Recheck system operation.

If wave pattern is as illustrated, test is complete. If wave pattern is not as illustrated, go to step 10.
- Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and ECM harness connector terminals No. 110 and 112. Battery voltage should exist. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, see «POWER & GROUND CIRCUITS (G35)»(ref-151810-S21162864312003010800000) in ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS.
- Using voltmeter, check voltage between ECM harness connector terminal No. 31 and ground. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Battery voltage should exist. If battery voltage exists, go to step 8. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Disconnect IPDM E/R harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM harness connector terminal No. 31 and IPDM E/R harness connector terminal No. 35. Continuity should exist. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Also check harness for short to power or short to ground. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, replace IPDM E/R.
- Check the following: Harness connectors E12 and F3. Check harness for open or short between ECM and IPDM E/R. Repair or replace harness or connectors as necessary.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect condenser harness connector. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM harness connector terminal No. 31 and condenser harness connector terminal No. 1. Continuity should exist. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Also check harness for short to power or short to ground. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, replace IPDM E/R.
- Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Ensure condenser harness connector is disconnected. Check harness continuity between ECM harness connector terminal No. 12 and condenser harness connector terminal No. 1. Continuity should exist. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Also check harness for short to power or short to ground. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair short to power or short to ground in harness, or faulty connector.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure all disconnected harness connectors are reconnected. Disconnect ignition coil harness connector. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Check voltage between ground and ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 3. If battery voltage exists, go to step 12. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors F18 and F201. Check harness for open or short between ignition coil and ECM. Check harness for open or short between ignition coil and harness connector F3. Repair or replace harness or connectors as necessary.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Check for continuity between ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 2 and engine ground. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check for short to power. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step 14.
- Check the following: Harness connectors F18 and F201. Check harness for open or short to power between ignition coil and engine ground. Repair or replace harness or connectors as necessary.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check for continuity between ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 1 and ECM harness connector terminals No. 5, 6, 7, 15, 16 and 17. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check for short to ground or short to power. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step 16.
- Check the following: Harness connectors F18 and F201. Check harness for open or short between ignition coil and ECM. Repair or replace harness or connectors as necessary.
- Disconnect ignition coil harness connectors. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance at specified terminals. See «IGNITION COIL WITH POWER TRANSISTOR RESISTANCES»(ref-151810-S16865056052003120300000) table. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. - Using CONSULT-II, perform POWER BALANCE in ACTIVE TEST mode. At each step in POWER BALANCE test, engine RPM should drop momentarily. If engine RPM drops as specified, test is complete. If engine RPM does not drop as specified, go to step 14.
- Let engine idle. Using an oscilloscope, read the voltage signal between ground and ECM terminals No. 5, 6, 7, 15, 16 and 17 with oscilloscope. Verify that the oscilloscope screen shows the correct reading. (Scheme 38) If results are as specified, inspection is complete. If results are not as specified, go to step 14.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Check voltage between ground and ECM terminals No. 110 and 112. (Scheme 66)Battery voltage should exist. If results are as specified, go to next step. If results are not as specified, see «POWER & GROUND CIRCUITS (I35)»(ref-151810-S26270706042003092900000).
- Check voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 31. Battery voltage should exist. If results are as specified, go to step 11. If results are not as specified, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECM relay. (Scheme 67) Check harness continuity between ECM relay terminal No. 31 and ECM relay terminal No. 7. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to step 8. If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors E15 and F18. Harness for open or short between ECM and ECM relay. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Check voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 6. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to step 10. If voltage is are not as specified, go to next step.
- Check the following: 15-amp fuse. Harness for open and short between ECM relay and fuse. Repair or replace fuse, harness or connectors.
- Apply 12 volts between ECM relay terminals No. 1 and 2. (Scheme 31) Check continuity between ECM relay terminals No. 3 and 5, 6 and 7. If ther is 12 volt supply between terminals No. 1 and 2, continuity should exist. If there is no 12 volt, continuity should not exist. If test results are as specified, go to step 19. If test results are not as specified, replace ECM relay.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect condenser harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 31 and condenser terminal No. 1. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Check harness continuity between engine ground and condenser terminal No. 2. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Check harness for short to power. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair open circuit or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Check resistance between condenser terminals No. 1 and 2. Resistance should be greater than one megohm at 77°F (25°C). If results are as specified, go to next step. If results are not as specified, replace condenser.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Reconnect all disconnected harness connectors. Disconnect ignition coil harness connector. (Scheme 68) Turn ignition switch to ON position. Check voltage between ground and ignition coil terminal No. 3. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to step 16. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors F57 and F221. Harness for open and short between ignition coil and harness connector F18. Repair or replace harness or connectors as necessary.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Check harness continuity between engine ground and ignition coil terminal No. 2. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to power. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair open circuit or short to power in harness or connectors as necessary.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between ignition coil terminal No. 1 and ECM terminals No. 5, 6, 7, 15, 16 and 17. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Also check resistance between ignition coil terminals No. 2 and 3. (Scheme 69) If resistance is greater than zero ohms, go to next step. If resistance is zero ohms, replace ignition coil with power transistor.

- Check voltage between ground and ECM harness connector terminal No. 5. Battery voltage should exist. If battery voltage exists, go to step 10. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Check the following: 20-amp fuse. Fusible link and relay block (J/B) harness connector E3. Fuse block (J/B) No. 2 harness connector E215. Check for open or short between fuse and ECM relay. Repair as necessary.

- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Disconnect ECM relay. Check harness continuity between ECM harness connector terminal No. 12 and ECM relay harness connector terminal No. 3. Continuity should exist. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Also check harness for short to power or short to ground. If no problem is found, go to step 8. If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors M135 and F105. (Scheme 37) Fuse block (J/B) No. 2 harness connector M143. (Scheme 32) Joint connector-21 Check for open or short between ECM and ECM relay. Repair as necessary.
- Check voltage between ground and ECM harness connector terminal No. 5. Battery voltage should exist. If battery voltage exists, go to step 10. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Check the following: 20-amp fuse. Fusible link and relay block (J/B) harness connector E3. Fuse block (J/B) No. 2 harness connector E215. (Scheme 32) Check for open or short between fuse and ECM relay. Repair or replace as necessary.
- Check ECM relay. See «ECM RELAY»(ref-151810-S36207447432003010800000) under RELAYS in RELAYS & SOLENOIDS. If ECM relay is okay, go to step 18. If ECM relay is faulty, replace ECM relay.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect condenser harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM harness connector terminal No. 12 and condenser harness connector terminal No. 1. Also check for continuity between engine ground and condenser harness connector terminal No. 2. Continuity should exist. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Also check harness for short to power or short to ground. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair open circuit or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Disconnect condenser harness connector. Measure resistance between condenser terminals No. 1 and 2. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Resistance should be one megohm at 77°F (25°C). If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace condenser.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure all disconnected harness connectors are reconnected. Disconnect ignition coil harness connector. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Check voltage between ground and ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 3. If battery voltage exists, go to step 15. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Check for open or short circuit between ignition coil and harness connector F105. Repair or replace harness or connector as necessary.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ignition coil harness connector. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Check continuity between engine ground and ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 2. Continuity should exist. Also check for short to power. If problem is found, repair harness or connectors as necessary. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 1 and ECM harness connector terminals No. 18, 19, 20, 21, 29, 30, 30 and 31. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for open, short to ground or short to power. If problem is found, repair harness or connectors as necessary. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Disconnect ignition coil harness connectors. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance at specified terminals. See «IGNITION COIL WITH POWER TRANSISTOR RESISTANCES»(ref-151810-S16865056052003120300000) table. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace ignition coil with power transistor. Recheck system operation.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-151809-S41696183142003010800000) in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
Ignition Coil & Power Transistor (QX4)
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Attempt to start engine. If engine operates and CONSULT-II is being used for diagnosis, go to next step. If engine operates and CONSULT-II is not being used for diagnosis, go to step 12. If engine does not operate, go to step 3.
- Using CONSULT-II, perform POWER BALANCE in ACTIVE TEST mode. At each step in POWER BALANCE test, engine RPM should drop momentarily. If engine RPM drops as specified, test is complete. If engine RPM does not drop as specified, go to step 12.
- Let engine idle. Using a voltmeter or CONSULT-II, read voltage between ground and ECM terminals No. 110 and 112. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, see «POWER & GROUND CIRCUITS (Q45)»(ref-151810-S00388626332003010800000) in ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect condenser harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using CONSULT-II or voltmeter, measure voltage between ground and condenser harness connector terminal No. 1. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to step 10. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECM relay. Check for continuity between ECM relay harness connector terminal No. 3 and condenser harness connector terminal No. 1. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to power or short to ground. If no problem is found, go to step 7. If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Harness connectors E1, M1, M33 and F22. Check harness for open or short between condenser and ECM relay. Repair as necessary. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
- Using CONSULT-II or voltmeter, measure voltage between ground and ECM relay harness connector terminal No. 5. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to step 9. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check the following: 10-amp fuse. Check harness for open or short between fuse and ECM relay. Repair as necessary.
- Apply 12 volts to ECM relay terminals No. 1 and 2. (Scheme 55) Check for continuity between ECM relay terminals No. 3 and 5. Also check for continuity between ECM relay terminals No. 6 and 7. Continuity should exist between ecified terminals. Disconnect battery voltage and recheck continuity. Continuity should not exist between indicated terminals. If continuity is as specified, go to step 17. If continuity is not as specified, replace ECM relay.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure condenser harness connector is disconnected. Check harness continuity between engine ground and condenser harness connector terminal No. 2. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to power or short to ground. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair open circuit or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between condenser terminals No. 1 and 2. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Resistance should be one megohm at 77°F (25°C). If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace condenser.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure all disconnected harness connectors are reconnected. Disconnect ignition coil harness connector. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Check voltage between ground and ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 3. If battery voltage exists, go to step 14. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Check harness for open or short between ignition coil and harness connector F22. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Repair or replace harness connectors as necessary. After repair, retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ignition coil harness connector. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Check continuity between engine ground and ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 2. Also check for short to power. If problem is found, repair harness or connectors as necessary. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check for continuity between ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 1 and ECM harness connector terminals No. 21, 22, 23, 30, 31 and 32. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground or short to power. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair harness as necessary.
- Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between ignition coil terminals No. 2 and 3. Resistance should be greater than zero ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace ignition coil and power transistor.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-151809-S41696183142003010800000) in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
PCV VALVE
With engine idling, remove PCV valve, leaving vacuum hose connected. A hissing noise should be heard as air passes through valve. A strong vacuum should be felt immediately when a finger is placed over valve inlet. If operation is not as specified, replace PCV valve.
FUEL EVAPORATIVE SYSTEM
Note. For system testing, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
Strong Fuel Odor From EVAP Canister
- Remove EVAP canister with EVAP Canister Vent Control Valve (EVAP-CVCV) attached. see scheme 49 Weigh EVAP canister with EVAP-CVCV attached. If weight is less than 4.0 lbs. (1.8 kg), go to next step. If weight is more than 4.0 lbs. (1.8 kg), go to step 3.
- Invert EVAP canister. If water drains from EVAP canister, go to next step. If water does not drain from EVAP canister, go to step 5.
- Replace EVAP canister. Remove water separator. Inspect water separator and hose for cracks or blockage. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, go to next step. CAUTION: DO NOT disassemble water separator.
- With water separator port "A" plugged, blow air into port "B". (Scheme 71) Air should flow out of port "C". With port "C" plugged, blow air into port "B". Air should flow out of port "A". If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, replace water separator.
- Check refueling EVAP vapor cut valve. See «REFUELING EVAP VAPOR CUT VALVE»(ref-151810-S28625202892003010800000). If refueling EVAP vapor cut valve is okay, go to next step. If refueling EVAP vapor cut valve is not okay, replace fuel tank.
- Check refueling control valve. See «REFUELING CONTROL VALVE TEST»(ref-151810-S08366276102003010800000). If refueling control valve is okay, test is complete. If refueling control valve is not okay, replace fuel tank.
Scheme 71
Cannot Refuel/Fuel Odor From Fuel Filler While Refueling
- Remove EVAP canister with EVAP Canister Vent Control Valve (EVAP-CVCV) attached. see scheme 49 Weigh EVAP canister with EVAP-CVCV attached. If weight is less than 4.0 lbs. (1.8 kg), go to next step. If weight is more than 4.0 lbs. (1.8 kg), go to step 3.
- Invert EVAP canister. If water drains from EVAP canister, go to next step. If water does not drain from EVAP canister, go to step 5.
- Replace EVAP canister. Remove water separator. Inspect water separator and hose for cracks or blockage. Repair as necessary. If no problems are found, go to next step. CAUTION: DO NOT disassemble water separator.
- With water separator port "A" plugged, blow air into port "B". (Scheme 71) Air should flow out of port "C". With port "C" plugged, blow air into port "B". Air should flow out of port "A". If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, replace water separator.
- Check hoses between EVAP canister and refueling control valve for blockage, leak or improper connection. see scheme 51 Also check signal line and recirculation line for blockage or leak. see scheme 52 Repair as necessary. If no problems are found, go to next step.
- Check refueling control valve. See «REFUELING CONTROL VALVE TEST»(ref-151810-S08366276102003010800000). If refueling control valve is okay, go to next step. If refueling control valve is not okay, replace fuel tank.
- Check refueling EVAP vapor cut valve. See «REFUELING EVAP VAPOR CUT VALVE TEST»(ref-151810-S28625202892003010800000). If refueling EVAP vapor cut valve is okay, go to next step. If refueling EVAP vapor cut valve is not okay, replace fuel tank.
- Check fuel filler tube and hose for blockage or leak. Replace fuel filler tube, if necessary. If fuel filler tube is okay, go to next step.
- Check one-way fuel valve for blockage. Repair as necessary. If no blockage exists, ensure fuel tank is empty. Insert a suitable dowel through one-way fuel valve. One-way fuel valve should open. Remove dowel. One-way fuel valve should close. If operation is as specified, test is complete. If operation is not as specified, replace fuel tank.
POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION
Run engine at idle. Remove ventilation hose from PCV valve. Hissing noise should be heard and a strong vacuum should be felt immediately when finger is placed over valve inlet. If vacuum is not felt, check PCV valve for clogging. Service or replace as necessary.
INTAKE VALVE TIMING CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE
See appropriate diagnostic test in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
MISCELLANEOUS CONTROLS
Note. Although some of the controlled devices listed here are not technically engine performance components, they can affect driveability if they malfunction.
A/C CLUTCH RELAY
See appropriate A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article in AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using CONSULT-II scan tool, select DATA MONITOR, then LOAD SIGNAL. Turn rear window defogger switch to ON position. Scan tool should indicate ON. Turn rear window defogger switch to OFF position. Scan tool should indicate OFF. If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, go to step 3 .
- Turn headlight switch to ON position (2nd position). Scan tool should indicate ON. Turn headlight switch to OFF position. Scan tool should indicate OFF. If operation is as specified, system is okay. If operation is not as specified, go to step 4 .
- Repair rear window defogger system. See appropriate REAR WINDOW DEFOGGERS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
- Repair headlight system. See appropriate HEADLIGHT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.

- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using voltmeter, measure voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 52. Turn headlight switch to ON position and check voltage. Turn headlight switch to OFF position and check voltage. See «ELECTRICAL LOAD TEST (Q45)»(ref-151810-S23642630812003120900000) table. If voltage readings are as specified, inspection is complete. If voltage readings are not as specified, go to next step.
- Start engine. Turn rear window defogger switch to ON position. If rear window heats up, go to next step. If rear window does not heat up, repair rear window defogger system. See appropriate REAR WINDOW DEFOGGERS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Disconnect rear window defogger relay. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Using ohmmeter, check continuity between ECM harness connector terminal No. 52 and rear window defogger relay harness connector terminal No. 7. Ensure ohmmeter leads are correctly placed for both test conditions. (Scheme 72) Also check harness for short to ground or short to power. If no problem is found, go step 6. If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check the following: Check harness connectors E1 and M1. Check harness connectors M33 and F22. Diode M37. Harness for short or open between ECM and rear window defogger relay. Repair as necessary. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-151809-S41696183142003010800000) in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
- Start engine. Turn headlight switch to ON position (2nd position). If headlights operate, go to next step. If headlights do not operate, repair headlight system. See appropriate HEADLIGHT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
- Stop engine. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Disconnect headlight relay harness connector. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Using ohmmeter, check continuity between ECM harness connector terminal No. 52 and LH headlight relay harness connector terminal No. 5. Ensure ohmmeter leads are correctly placed for both test conditions. (Scheme 73) Also check harness for short to ground or short to power. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, go to step 10.
- Disconnect Daytime Running Light (DRL) control unit harness connector. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Using ohmmeter, check continuity between ECM harness connector terminal No. 52 and DRL control unit harness connector terminal No. 5. Ensure ohmmeter leads are correctly placed for both test conditions. (Scheme 74) Also check harness for short to ground or short to power. If problem is found, go next step. If no problem is found, go to step 11.
- Check the following: Harness connectors E1 and M1. Harness connectors M33 and F22. Diode E121. Harness for short or open between ECM and headlamp left side relay or daytime running light control unit. Repair as necessary.
