TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS WITH BATTERY/STARTING/CHARGING SYSTEM TESTER

Note. To ensure a complete and thorough diagnosis, the battery, starter and generator test segments must be done as a set from start to finish.

  1. Turn off all loads on the vehicle electrical system.
  2. Perform battery and starting system test with Battery/Starting/Charging system tester. For tester identification (Scheme 1)
  3. Press "ENTER" to begin the charging system test.
  4. Start engine.
  5. Press "ENTER" until "LOADS OFF REV ENGINE 5 SEC" is displayed.
  6. Raise and hold the engine speed at 1500 to 2000 RPM for about 5 seconds, then return the engine to idle. Once the increase in engine RPM is detected, press "ENTER" to continue.
  7. The tester now checks the engine at idle and performs the DIODE/RIPPLE check.
  8. When complete, the tester will prompt you to turn on the following electrical loads. Heater fan set to highest speed, DO NOT run the A/C or windshield defroster, headlight high beam and rear window defogger.
  9. Press "ENTER" to continue.
  10. Raise and hold the engine speed at 1500 to 2000 RPM for about 5 seconds, then return the engine to idle. Once the increase in engine RPM is detected, press "ENTER" to continue.
  11. Diagnostic result is displayed on the tester. See «DIAGNOSTIC RESULT ITEM»(ref-166373-S28319802212004091700000).
  12. Press "ENTER" then test output code is displayed. Record the test output code on the repair order.
  13. Toggle back to the "DIAGNOSTIC SCREEN" for test results.

  1. Remove battery.
  2. Remove air intake duct.
  3. Remove generator, water pump, and A/C compressor belt.
  4. Remove power steering hose clamp mounting bolt. (Scheme 9)
  5. Remove generator stay mounting bolts and generator stay.
  6. Remove radiator reservoir tank and radiator reservoir tank bracket.
  7. Remove battery ground harness mounting bolt. (Scheme 10)
  8. Remove engine room harness clip.
  9. Remove generator mounting bolt. (Scheme 11)
  10. Remove generator bracket mounting bolts and generator bracket.
  11. Remove "B" terminal nut.
  12. Disconnect generator connector.
  13. Remove generator ground harness mounting bolt.
  14. Remove power steering oil reservoir tank mounting bolts, then slide power steering oil reservoir tank. (Scheme 12)
  15. Remove generator assembly from vehicle upper side.
  16. To install, reverse removal procedure. (Scheme 13)

Scheme 14: Removal & Installation
  1. Remove air duct (inlet).
  2. With box wrench, and while securely holding the hexagonal part in pulley center of auto tensioner, move the wrench handle in the direction of arrow (loosening direction of tensioner). (Scheme 14)
  3. Under the above condition, insert a metal bar of approximately.24 in. (6 mm) in diameter (hexagonal bar wrench shown as example in the figure) through the holding boss to lock auto tensioner pulley arm. Leave auto tension pulley arm locked until belt is installed again.
  4. Remove generator, water pump and A/C compressor belt.
  5. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure belt is securely installed around all pulleys. Unlock auto tensioner pulley arm to give tension to belt. Rotate crankshaft pulley several turns clockwise to equalize belt tension between pulleys. Check that belt tension is within allowable working range, using indicator. see scheme 16
