DTC P0501 - VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) RANGE Hyundai Elantra II

  1. Install scan tool. Start engine and check if DTC P0501 is present. If DTC is present, go to next step. If DTC is not present, problem is intermittent.
  2. Turn ignition off. Check speedometer cable and drive gear. Repair as necessary. If speedometer cable and gear are okay, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Turn ignition on. Connect DVOM between ECM terminal No. 42 and ground and check VSS output. See appropriate wiring diagram in «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-16579-S30018521442000122900000) section. Move vehicle or turn speedometer cable. If reading toggles, go to step 6). If reading does not toggle, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connectors "A" (12-pin), "B" (10-pin) and "C" (12-pin). Connect DVOM between ground and harness connector "A" terminal No. 10. Turn ignition on. Voltage reading should be 4.5-4.9 volts. Connect DVOM between ground and harness connector "C" terminal No. 4. Voltage reading should be 4.5-4.9 volts. If voltage reading is as specified, go to next step. If voltage reading is not as specified, check circuit(s) between affected harness connector terminals and ECM terminal No. 42.
  5. Connect DVOM between ground and instrument cluster harness connector "B" terminal No. 8. Continuity should be present. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, check circuit between terminal No. 8 and chassis ground.
  6. Reconnect ECM harness connector. Check terminals behind instrument cluster. Replace instrument cluster as necessary. If instrument cluster is okay, clear DTC. See «CLEARING DTC(S)»(ref-16579-S36162508062000122900000) . Retest system. If DTC resets, replace ECM.
