Removal & Installation

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect starter motor signal wire and solenoid battery cable terminal nut and cable. (Scheme 6)
3. Remove the starter motor retaining bolts and remove starter motor. (Scheme 6)
4. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten starter retaining bolts and solenoid battery cable terminal nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168382-S36066029852004110600000).

BRUSH REPLACEMENT

1. Pry back each brush spring with a screwdriver, then position the brush about halfway out of its holder, and release the spring to hold it in position. (Scheme 7)
2. Install armature in housing and install brush holder. Next, pry back each brush spring again and push the brush down until it seats against the commutator. Release spring against the end of the brush. (Scheme 8)
3. To seat new brushes, slip a strip of 500 or 600 grit sandpaper between the commutator and each brush, with the grit side up. Smoothly rotate the armature. The contact surface of the brushes will be sanded to the same contour as the commutator.
