STARTER RELAY TEST

Note. For circuit identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. Remove starter relay from engine compartment relay and fuse box. see scheme 3
  2. Using a Digital Volt Ohmmeter (DVOM), check continuity between starter relay terminals No. 2 and 4. (Scheme 2) If there is no continuity, replace starter relay. Check continuity between starter relay terminals No. 1 and 5. (Scheme 2) If there is continuity, replace starter relay. If both checks are okay, go to next step.
  3. Apply battery voltage across starter relay terminals No. 2 and 4. Using a DVOM, check that there is continuity between starter relay terminals No. 1 and 5. (Scheme 3) If there is no continuity, replace starter relay. If there is continuity, starter relay is okay. Install starter relay and engine compartment relay and fuse box cover.

CLUTCH PEDAL SWITCH TEST (M/T)

Disconnect clutch pedal switch connector, located on pedal assembly bracket. Using ohmmeter, check continuity between switch terminals. Continuity should exist with switch depressed. Continuity should not exist with switch released. If continuity is not as specified, replace clutch pedal switch.

NO-LOAD TEST

  1. Place the starter motor in a vise equipped with soft jaws and connect a fully charged 12 volt battery to starter motor as follows: Connect a test ammeter (100-ampere scale) and carbon pile rheostat as shown is the illustration. Connect a voltmeter (15-volt scale) across starter motor. Rotate carbon pile to the off position. Connect the battery cable from battery's negative post to the starter motor body. (Scheme 4)
  2. Adjust until battery voltage shown on the voltmeter reads 11 volts.
  3. Confirm that the maximum amperage is within the specifications and that the starter motor turns smoothly and freely. For specifications, see STARTER SPECIFICATIONS.

Inspection

  1. Check Armature Wear - Replace armature if there is any signs of wear or damage due to contact with permanent magnet.
  2. Check Armature Commutator Surface - Resurface commutator surface, with emery cloth or lathe, if dirty or burnt. (Scheme 5) Ensure commutator is within specification. See CHECKING RUNOUT & DIAMETER.
