BRUSH ASSEMBLY
Note. Brushes that are oil soaked or worn out should be replaced.
- Ensure brushes slide freely in brush holder. If brushes do not slide freely, check for dirt or contamination. Clean brushes and recheck operation. Replace brushes if brushes still do not slide freely. See «OVERHAUL»(ref-168382-S38380870702004110600000).
- To check brush holder for a short to ground, check continuity between insulated brush holder and grounded brush holder. (Scheme 9) No continuity should exist. Replace brush holder if continuity exists. See «OVERHAUL»(ref-168382-S38380870702004110600000).
- Inspect brushes for cracks. Using caliper, measure brush length. For specification, see «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168382-S34104059162004110600000). Replace brushes if length is not within specification. See «OVERHAUL»(ref-168382-S38380870702004110600000).
- Insert brush into the brush holder, bring brush into contact with starter armature commutator and attach a spring scale to the brush spring. (Scheme 10) Measure spring tension at the moment spring lifts off the brush. See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168382-S34104059162004110600000).

OVERHAUL
| CAUTION | DO NOT immerse starter components in cleaning solvent. Immersing yoke and field coil assembly and/or armature will damage insulation. Wipe these components with a cloth only. DO NOT immerse drive unit in cleaning solvent. Overrunning clutch is factory lubricated and solvent will wash lubrication from clutch. Drive unit may be cleaned with a brush moistened with cleaning solvent and wiped dry using a cloth. |
STARTER ASSEMBLY
- Disconnect the "M" terminal on the starter solenoid assembly. (Scheme 11)
- Remove the starter solenoid assembly retaining screws and remove the starter solenoid assembly. (Scheme 12)
- Remove the brush holder retaining screws and starter through bolts. (Scheme 13)
- Remove the rear bracket and brush holder assembly. (Scheme 14)
- Remove the armature and yoke assembly. (Scheme 15)
- Remove the lever plate and planet shaft packing. (Scheme 16)
- Remove the planet gears. (Scheme 17)
- Remove the planet shaft assembly and lever. (Scheme 18)
- Using a suitable socket, press the stop ring retainer off of the stop ring. (Scheme 19)
- Using expandable pliers, remove the stop ring. (Scheme 20)
- Remove the stop ring retainer, overrunning clutch and internal gear from the planet shaft. (Scheme 21)
