Gearshift Lever Cannot Be Moved From "P" Position With Brake Pedal Depressed

Possible cause: Fault in shift interlock system. See SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM under SYSTEM TESTS.

Ignition Key Cannot Be Moved From ACC To LOCK Position With Gearshift Lever In "P" Position

Possible cause: Fault in key interlock system. See KEY INTERLOCK SYSTEM under SYSTEM TESTS.

Note. For shift interlock system circuit wire color and terminal identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. Press the brake pedal. Are the brake lights on? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair faulty brake light circuit. See appropriate EXTERIOR LIGHTS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  2. Turn the ignition on, and shift to the "P" position.
  3. Press the brake pedal, and release the accelerator pedal.
  4. Access ECM connector "A" (32-pin). ECM is located behind glove box, under carpeting. see scheme 1 Measure the voltage between ground and ECM connector terminal A28. see scheme 9 Is there battery voltage? If yes, check for an open in the wire between ECM connector terminal A28 and the gauge assembly interlock control system circuit, and check for loose terminal fit in the gauge assembly connectors. If necessary, substitute a known-good gauge assembly and recheck. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If no, go to next step.
  5. Disconnect TCM connectors "A" and "B" (31-pin).
  6. Press the brake pedal, and measure the voltage between TCM connector terminals B12 and A4 or A17. see scheme 10 Is there battery voltage? If yes, release the brake pedal, and go to next step. If no, repair open in the wire between TCM connector terminal B12 and the brake pedal position switch. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-153089-S27319941002003031400000).
  7. Reconnect TCM connectors "A" and "B".
  8. Turn the ignition switch on (II).
  9. Measure the voltage between TCM connector terminals B4 and A4 or A17. Is there about.5 volts? If yes, go to step 14. If no, go to next step.
  10. Turn the ignition switch off.
  11. Disconnect the TP sensor connector. (Scheme 221)
  12. Turn the ignition switch on (II).
  13. Measure the voltage between the No. 1 and 3 terminals (outside terminals) on the TP sensor harness connector. Is there about 5 volts? If yes, check for an open or a short in the wire between TCM connector terminal B4 and the TP sensor. If the wire is okay, replace the TP sensor. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If no, go to next step.
  14. Turn the ignition switch off.
  15. Disconnect ECM connector "B" (25-pin).
  16. Check for continuity between the TP sensor No. 3 terminal and body ground. Is there continuity? If yes, check for a short to ground between the No. 3 terminal of TP sensor connector and ground. If the wire is okay, replace the TP sensor. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If no, go to next step.
  17. Remove front console. See «FRONT CONSOLE»(ref-153089-S15903761972003031400000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  18. Disconnect the shift lock solenoid connector. See «SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID»(ref-153089-S21334109682003031400000) under COMPONENT TESTS.
  19. Turn the ignition switch on (II).
  20. Press the brake pedal, and check the voltage between the No. 1 and 2 terminals of the shift lock solenoid connector. Is there battery voltage? If yes, go to next step. If no, check for an open or a short in the wires between the shift lock solenoid connector and the gauge assembly. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-153089-S27319941002003031400000). If wires are okay, check for a loose terminal fit in the gauge assembly connectors. If necessary, substitute a known-good gauge assembly and recheck. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  21. Connect the No. 1 terminal of the shift lock solenoid connector to the battery positive terminal, and connect the No. 2 terminal to the battery negative terminal.
  22. Check that the shift lock solenoid operates. Does the shift lock solenoid operate properly? If yes, check for loose gauge assembly connectors. If necessary, substitute a known-good gauge assembly and recheck. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If no, replace the shift lock solenoid. See «SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID»(ref-153089-S36996228372003031400000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

KEY INTERLOCK SYSTEM

  1. Remove screws from lower steering column cover. Remove upper and lower steering column covers. Disconnect the key switch connector (5-pin) from the steering lock assembly.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ACC (I) or ON (II) position.
  3. Connect the No. 4 terminal of the key switch connector to the battery positive terminal, and connect the No. 5 terminal to the battery negative terminal. (Scheme 222)
  4. Check the key interlock solenoid operation. A clicking sound should be heard while pushing the ignition key in, and you should not be able to turn switch to the OFF position. Does the key interlock solenoid operate properly? If yes, go to next step. If no, key interlock solenoid/switch is faulty. Replace the ignition key cylinder/steering lock assembly. See appropriate STEERING COLUMNS article in STEERING.
  5. Check for continuity between the No. 3 and 4 terminals. Is there continuity while pushing the key in, and no continuity when the key is released? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the ignition key cylinder/steering lock assembly. See appropriate STEERING COLUMNS article in STEERING.
  6. Measure the voltage between key switch assembly 5-pin connector terminal No. 4 and body ground. Is there battery voltage? If yes, go to next step. If no, check for a blown No. 6 (10-amp) fuse in the under-hood fuse/relay box. If the fuse is okay, repair open or short in the wire between key switch assembly 5-pin connector terminal No. 4 and the underhood fuse/relay box.
  7. Measure the voltage between the No. 3 and 4 terminals of the steering lock assembly connector (6-pin). Shift lever must be in "P" position. Is there battery voltage with shift lever in "P" position and zero volts with shift lever out of "P" position? If yes, go to next step. If no, check for open or short in the wire between the No. 3 terminal of steering lock assembly connector and the gauge assembly. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-153089-S27319941002003031400000). If wires are okay, check for a loose terminal fit in the gauge assembly connectors. If necessary, substitute a known-good gauge assembly and recheck. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  8. Move the shift lever back to "P" position, and measure the voltage between steering lock assembly connector terminals No. 4 and 5. (Scheme 222) Is there battery voltage with shift lever in "P" position and zero volts with shift lever out of "P" position? If yes, check for a loose terminal fit in the gauge assembly connectors. If necessary, substitute a known-good gauge assembly and recheck. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If no, go to next step.
  9. Remove front console. See «FRONT CONSOLE»(ref-153089-S15903761972003031400000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  10. Disconnect the park pin switch connector (4-pin). See «PARK PIN SWITCH»(ref-153089-S37696340082003031400000) under COMPONENT TESTS.
  11. Check for continuity between the No. 3 and No. 4 terminals of the park pin switch connector (4-pin) while you move the shift lever in and out of the "P" position. (Scheme 223) Is there continuity with the shift lever in the "P" position, and no continuity with the shift lever in any position other than "P"? If yes, repair open or short in the wires between the park pin switch connector and the steering lock/key switch assembly. If no, replace the park pin switch. COMPONENT TESTS

WARNINGVehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS.

PARK PIN SWITCH

  1. Remove the front console. See «FRONT CONSOLE»(ref-153089-S15903761972003031400000).
  2. Disconnect the park pin switch assembly connector.
  3. Shift the gearshift lever into the "P" position, then check for continuity between the park pin switch component connector No. 3 and 4 terminals. (Scheme 223) There should be continuity.
  4. Shift the gearshift lever out of the "P" position, and check for continuity between the park pin switch assembly component connector No. 3 and 4 terminals. There should be no continuity.
  5. Replace park pin switch if faulty. See «PARK PIN SWITCH»(ref-153089-S36282019752003031400000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID

  1. Remove the front console. See «FRONT CONSOLE»(ref-153089-S15903761972003031400000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Disconnect the shift lock solenoid harness connector. (Scheme 224)
  3. Connect the No. 1 (Yellow wire) terminal of the shift lock solenoid connector to the battery positive terminal, and connect the No. 2 (Yellow/Green wire) terminal to the battery negative terminal.
  4. Check that the gearshift lever can be moved from the "P" position. Release the battery terminals from the shift lock solenoid connector. Move the gearshift lever back to the "P" position, and make sure it locks.
  5. Check that the shift lock releases when the release button is pushed, and check that it locks when the release button is released.
  6. If the solenoid does not work, replace the shift lock solenoid. See «SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID»(ref-153089-S36996228372003031400000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

FRONT CONSOLE

Note. When prying with a flat-tip screwdriver, wrap it with protective tape, and apply protective tape around the related parts, to prevent damage. Take care not to scratch the front seat, and related parts.

  1. Remove the front console. See «FRONT CONSOLE»(ref-153089-S15903761972003031400000).
  2. Remove the A/T gear position indicator panel light, and remove the bulb (A) from the socket (B). (Scheme 225)
  3. Separate the A/T gear position indicator panel from the shift lever bracket base (C).
  4. Disconnect the park pin switch connector (4-pin) (D), and remove it from the shift lever bracket base.
  5. Remove the park pin switch clamp (E) and the park pin switch (F).
  6. Install the new park pin switch in the shift lever bracket base, and install the park pin switch clamp.
  7. Install the removed parts in the reverse order of removal.
