1. Assemble the piston base (A), piston base spring (B), piston pin base insert (C), and piston base head (D) as shown below.
2. Temporarily install the pilot collar over the piston pin base insert (A), and adjust the piston base head inserts as shown below, then tighten the screws (B). Remove the pilot collar.
3. Assemble and adjust the length of the piston pin driver head and shaft to 57 mm (2.2 in.).
4. With the arrow on top of the piston pointing up, place the piston assembly (A) on the piston base (B). Be sure you position the recessed flat area of the piston against the piston base head inserts (C) as shown below.
5. Press the pin (D) out with the piston pin driver (E), the pilot collar (F), and a hydraulic press.

1. Check the connecting rod bearing clearance with plastigage (see «CONNECTING ROD BEARING REPLACEMENT»(ref-295036-S17430026122008081400000) ).
2. Check the main bearing clearance with plastigage (see «CRANKSHAFT MAIN BEARING REPLACEMENT»(ref-295036-S33650060432008081400000) ).
3. Install the bearing halves in the engine block and connecting rods.
4. Apply a coat of new engine oil to the main bearings and rod bearings.
5. Hold the crankshaft so rod journal No. 2 and rod journal No. 3 are straight up, then lower the crankshaft into the engine block.
6. Apply new engine oil to the thrust washer surfaces. Install the thrust washers (A) in the No. 4 journal of the engine block.
7. Inspect the connecting rod bolts (see «CONNECTING ROD BOLT INSPECTION»(ref-295036-S12292045482008081400000) ).
8. Apply new engine oil to the threads of the connecting rod bolts.
9. Seat the rod journals into connecting rod No. 1 and connecting rod No. 4. Line up the mark (B) on the connecting rod and cap, then install the caps and bolts finger-tight.
10. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise, and seat the journals into connecting rod No. 2 and connecting rod No. 3. Line up the mark on the connecting rod and cap, then install the caps and bolts finger-tight.
11. Tighten the connecting rod bolts to 9.8 N.m (1.0 kgf.m, 7.2 lbf.ft).
12. Tighten the connecting rod bolts an additional 90°. NOTE: Remove the connecting rod bolt if you tightened it beyond the specified angle, and go back to step 7 of the procedure. Do not loosen it back to the specified angle.
13. Remove any old liquid gasket from the bearing cap mating surfaces.
14. Clean and dry the bearing cap mating surfaces.
15. Apply a 1.5 mm wide bead of the liquid gasket, P/N 08717-0004, 08718-0001, 08718-0003, or 08718-0009, along the broken lines (A). Install the component within 5 minutes of applying the liquid gasket. NOTE: If you apply liquid gasket P/N 08718-0012, the component must be installed within 4 minutes. If too much time has passed after applying the liquid gasket, remove the old liquid gasket and residue, then reapply new liquid gasket.
16. Put the bearing cap on the engine block.
17. Apply new engine oil to the threads of the bearing cap bolts.
18. Tighten the bearing cap bolts in sequence to 25 N.m (2.5 kgf.m, 18 lbf.ft).
19. Tighten the bearing cap bolts an additional 40°.
20. Clean the excess liquid gasket off the engine block.
21. Apply a light coat of new engine oil to the lip of the crankshaft oil seal.
22. Use the handle driver and oil seal driver attachment to drive a new crankshaft oil seal squarely into the block to the specified installed height.
23. Measure the distance between the crankshaft (A) and the oil seal (B). Oil Seal Installed Height: 7-8 mm (0.28-0.31 in.)
24. Install the dowel pins (A) and a new O-ring (B) on the oil pump (C), then align the inner rotor with the crankshaft, and install the oil pump.
25. Install the oil screen (D) with a new gasket (E).
26. Install the cylinder head (see «ROCKER ARM ASSEMBLY AND CAMSHAFT INSTALLATION»(ref-295019-S20264890612008081400000) ).
27. Install the cam chain (see «CAM CHAIN INSTALLATION»(ref-295019-S06748989962008081400000) ).
28. Install the IMA motor housing (see «MOTOR HOUSING REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-351660-S29190217472009122700000) ).
29. Install the engine/IMA motor/transmission assembly (see «ENGINE INSTALLATION»(ref-295026-S05502995282008081400000) ). NOTE: When any crankshaft or connecting rod bearing is replaced, after assembly it is necessary to run the engine at idling speed until it reaches normal operating temperature, then continue to run it for about 15 minutes.

1. Remove any old liquid gasket from the oil pan mating surfaces, bolts, and bolt holes.
2. Clean and dry the oil pan mating surfaces and the O-ring groove.
3. Install the dowel pins (A), and install the new O-ring (B) and oil pan gasket (C) on the oil pan.
4. Apply liquid gasket, P/N 08718-0001, or 08718-0009, evenly to the engine block mating surface of the oil pan and to the inside edge of the bolt holes. Install the component within 5 minutes of applying the liquid gasket. NOTE: Apply a 1.5 mm wide bead of the liquid gasket along the broken line (A). Apply a 5.0 mm wide bead of the liquid gasket to the shaded area (B). If you apply liquid gasket P/N 08718-0012, the component must be installed within 4 minutes. If too much time has passed after applying the liquid gasket, remove the old liquid gasket and residue, then reapply new liquid gasket.
5. Install the oil pan. NOTE: Raise the oil pan carefully not to damage IMA motor (resolver stator).
6. Tighten the bolts in three steps. Wipe off the excess liquid gasket on the each side of the crankshaft pulley and the drive plate.
7. Tighten the two bolts securing the transmission.
8. Install the lower torque rod bracket mounting bolts.
9. Install the dipstick tube (A) with a new O-ring (B), then install the mounting bolt (C) and the harness clamps (D).
10. If the engine is still in the vehicle, do the following steps.
11. Attach the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the front subframe by looping the belt over the front of the front subframe, then secure the belt with its stop, then tighten the wing nut (see step 9 on «ENGINE INSTALLATION»(ref-295026-S05502995282008081400000) ).
12. Line up the slots in the front subframe arms with the bolt holes on the jack base, then carefully attach them with four bolts, raise the front subframe up to the body (see step 10 on «ENGINE INSTALLATION»(ref-295026-S05502995282008081400000) ).
13. Loosely install the new front subframe mounting bolts (see step 11 on «ENGINE INSTALLATION»(ref-295026-S05502995282008081400000) ).
14. Align the reference marks with the edge of the body, then tighten the mounting bolts (see step 12 on «ENGINE INSTALLATION»(ref-295026-S05502995282008081400000) ).
15. Remove the jack and subframe adapter.
16. Tighten the mid stiffener mounting bolts (see step 14 on «ENGINE INSTALLATION»(ref-295026-S05502995282008081400000) ).
17. Install the lower torque rod mounting bolts (see step 15 on «ENGINE INSTALLATION»(ref-295026-S05502995282008081400000) ).
18. Remove the engine support hanger and universal eyelet.
19. Connect the steering gearbox harness connectors (see step 22 on «ENGINE INSTALLATION»(ref-295026-S05502995282008081400000) ).
20. Connect the suspension lower arm ball joints (see «LOWER BALL JOINT REPLACEMENT»(ref-295035-S30704600312008081400000) ).
21. Connect the front stabilizer links (see «STABILIZER LINK REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-295035-S30008435532008081400000) ).
22. Install the under-floor three way catalytic converter (TWC) (see step 26 on «ENGINE INSTALLATION»(ref-295026-S05502995282008081400000) ).
23. Install the intake manifold bracket and the harness clamp (see step 8 on «INSTALLATION»(ref-295014-S39812387692008081400000) ).
24. Install the splash shield and the front undercover (see step 27 on «ENGINE INSTALLATION»(ref-295026-S05502995282008081400000) ).
25. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
26. Install the steering joint bolt (see step 35 on «ENGINE INSTALLATION»(ref-295026-S05502995282008081400000) ), then install the steering wheel (see «STEERING WHEEL INSTALLATION»(ref-295007-S24724857312008081400000) ).
27. Install the A/C compressor, then connect the A/C compressor clutch connector (see step 38 on «ENGINE MOUNT REPLACEMENT»(ref-295026-S36092555162008081400000) ).
28. Install the A/C condenser fan shroud assembly (see «RADIATOR AND FAN REPLACEMENT»(ref-295010-S07433322172008081400000) ).
29. Install the front wheels.
30. After assembly, wait at least 30 minutes before filling the engine oil.
31. Check the wheel alignment (see «WHEEL ALIGNMENT»(ref-295008-S02173436092008081400000) ).

1. Remove the IMA motor housing (see «MOTOR HOUSING REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-351660-S29190217472009122700000) ).
2. Remove the transmission end crankshaft oil seal.
3. Clean and dry the crankshaft oil seal housing.
4. Apply a light coat of multipurpose grease to the crankshaft and to the lip of the seal.
5. Using the handle driver and oil seal driver attachment, drive in the crankshaft oil seal until the driver attachment bottoms against the engine block end cover. Align the hole in the driver attachment with the pin on the crankshaft.
6. Measure the distance between the crankshaft (A) and the oil seal (B). Oil Seal Installed Height: 7-8 mm (0.28-0.31 in.)
7. Clean any excess grease off the crankshaft, and check that the oil seal lip is not distorted.
8. Install the IMA motor housing (see «MOTOR HOUSING REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-351660-S29190217472009122700000) ).
