ENGINE IDENTIFICATION

Engine identification number is located on front right of engine, behind oil dipstick. The first 5 characters (C27A4) of engine identification number identify engine type. The last 7 characters of engine identification number are a serial number.

The fourth, fifth and sixth characters (CE6) of Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) identify car line, body style and engine type. VIN is located at left front corner of dashboard and on upper portion of firewall.

Note. For repair procedures not covered in this article, see the ENGINE OVERHAUL PROCEDURES - GENERAL INFORMATION article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section.

Piston/Cylinder Identification

Pistons and cylinders are individually identified to maintain proper piston clearance. Identification letters or bars stamped on top left front of engine block indicate piston used in each cylinder. If identification mark on block is an "A" or a long bar, there will be no letter or bar on top of piston. If mark on block is a "B" or a short and long bar, there will be a "B" on top of piston. Read letters left to right and top to bottom. Letters on first line represent cylinders No. 1 through No. 3 and those on second line represent cylinders No. 4 through No. 6. (Scheme 32)

Connecting Rod Identification

Connecting rods have 4 specification ranges depending on large end bore size. Specification range is 0.0-0.0009" (zero-0.024 mm) in 0.0002" (0.006 mm) increments. Numbers 1-4 or short and long bars are stamped on side of connecting rod, indicating specification range. Numbers are for large end bore size and DO NOT indicate position of rod in engine. Any combination may be found in engine. Inspect connecting rods for cracks and heat damage, and nuts and bolts for stress cracks.
