Multifunction Electronic Modules: Overview Ford Transit VII

Principles of Operation

The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) communicates via the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN).

The GEM receives inputs and provides outputs for the power door lock system, exterior and interior lighting, front and rear wipers, and the warning chimes/lamps.

The GEM monitors the door lock/unlock switch inputs from the interior door lock switches. When the GEM receives an unlock/lock command from any door lock control switch, the module activates the door lock actuators. Refer to HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMS.

The GEM also controls the following remote lock/unlock features

  1. Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter lock/unlock

Normal Operation

The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) monitors the voltage from the battery to determine if it is above or below specific thresholds and sets DTC B1317 in continuous memory if the GEM detects high battery voltage above 16.5 volts on circuit 15-DK20.

  1. DTC B1317 (Battery Voltage High) - a continuous memory DTC that sets when the GEM detects battery voltage above 16.5 volts on circuit 15-DK20.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Charging system concern
  2. GEM

The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) monitors the voltage from the battery to determine if it is above or below specific thresholds and sets DTC B1318 in continuous memory if the GEM detects low battery voltage below 8.5 volts on circuit 15-DK20.

  1. DTC B1318 (Battery Voltage Low) - a continuous memory DTC that sets when the GEM detects battery voltage below 8.5 volts on circuit 15-DK20.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. High circuit resistance
  3. GEM

The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) and the Instrument Cluster (IC) communicate using the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN). Messages are exchanged between the modules on the MS-CAN .

  1. DTC U0146 (Lost Communication With Gateway (GTWY)) - set by the GEM whenever it loses communication with the IC if the ignition is in the ON position for a minimum of 5 seconds (not in the START position) and the GEM supply voltage is greater than 10.5 volts.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Module communication
  2. IC
  3. GEM

The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) and the Restraints Control Module (RCM) communicate using the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN). Messages are exchanged between the modules on the MS-CAN .

  1. DTC U0151 (Lost Communication With Restraints Control Module) - set by the GEM whenever it loses communication with the RCM if the ignition is not in the START position, but the ignition is in the ON position for a minimum of 5 seconds and the GEM supply voltage is greater than 10.5 volts.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Module communication
  2. GEM
  3. RCM

The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) and the Instrument Cluster (IC) communicate using the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN). Messages are exchanged between the modules on the MS-CAN .

  1. DTC U0155 (Lost Communication With Instrument Panel Cluster ( IC ) Control Module) - set by the GEM whenever it loses communication with the Instrument Cluster (IC) if the ignition is not in the START position, but the ignition is in the ON position for a minimum of 5 seconds and the GEM supply voltage is greater than 10.5 volts.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Module communication
  2. GEM
  3. IC
